FROM THE RABBI’S DESK As a community Rabbi, I have the privilege to field halachik questions frequently, both from within our community as well as from without. Some are straightforward and easy to answer, while others require research, consultation and sometimes even creativity. In honor of Purim, I thought I would share with you some of my favorite questions that I received this past year. Out of confidentiality, I have omitted the names of those that posed the questions.

• There was a glitch on the BRS website and I was able to secure an Emerald Pillar Society Membership that normally goes for $25,000 for only $15. Is it ok to enjoy the benefits? Can I tell others about this incredible deal before they notice and fix it?• Rabbi – If I spit on you when asking a sheila at the Kiddush because the food is so good I can’t stop eating for a moment, is that a violation of the BRS Civility Policy?• Is it permissible to double park in front of Kosher Marketplace during Yeshiva Week or is that only for people from New York?• I have a granola bar that says “not for individual sale.” Can I include it in my chametz sale form?

• When we say in Kol Nidrei that all our vows and pledges past and future are null and void, does that include my pledge to the Kol Nidrei appeal?

• Is it mechzei k’yuhara to wear tefillin while I tovel in the ocean after the sunrise minyan?• Under the new Obamacare law, am I entitled to an aliyah and mi’shebeirach without having to make a pledge?• Is it permissible for me to nominate my mother in law for the one-way trip to the Mars space station without her

knowledge?• I started making tri-colored Challah to go with my tri-colored gefilte fish and tri-colored matzah balls. Do I have to

separate dough from each of the colors or just from one of them?• I am looking to host an exiled prince for a meeting to organize a coup. Is the Shul available this Friday night?• I memorized a dvar Torah and want to give it at Shalosh Seudos. Can the Shul provide a bathtub or does my father

have to bring one from home?• I am looking for cleaning help who can also pick someone up from the airport and perhaps occasionally bring a small

package to Israel. Do you know of someplace I can post it?• Can the BRS security guard carry the Outreach Rabbi in his pocket on Shabbos without an eruv?• Do I still need to have “the talk” with my child if they heard “the speech” at the end of the main minyan a few weeks

ago?• Can I appoint the NSA to be the agents to check my home for chametz?• If an Ashkenazi boy has his bar mitzvah on Pesach, can I throw candies that have kitniyos at his head if I am a

Sephardi mover (and shaker)?• Can I attend the Happy Minyan if I am still sad about how much I had to pay for the Happiness Seminar?

Good Shabbos & Happy Purim!

BOCA RATON SYNAGOGUE DERECH ERETZ STATEMENTIn the spirit of our mission “Valuing Diversity and Celebrating Unity,” we believe that a community is built on the collective engagement of individuals representing differing perspectives, whether religious, political, or social. As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L”Shem Shamayim,“ for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we. “Derech Eretz,” good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a “safe place” for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue.

In line with our recently published Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive towards others and create an even better community. • Try not to stand and talk in doorways where it prevents the movement of traffic.• Please make an effort to return greetings and wish others a “Good Shabbos.” If you have a Mensch Message you would like us to promote, please email us at [email protected]

MEGILLAT ESTHER- A BRIEF CHAPTER BY CHAPTER SUMMARY1. King Achahverosh throws a lavish 180-day celebration, marking the 3rd year of his reign. When Queen Vashti refuses his request to appear at the celebration to display her beauty for the guests, the king’s advisors counsel that she be replaced.

2. Across the Persian Empire, officials were appointed to identify Vashti’s potential successors. A Jewish girl called Esther was brought to the capital as a candidate and ultimately selected as Queen. Mordechai learns of a plot to overthrow the king; he informs Esther, who in turn tells the king, and the plotters are hung.

3. Haman is appointed Prime Minister. Mordechai refuses to bow down to Haman, invoking his wrath. Haman vows to kill the Jews of Persia, and prevails upon the king to issue a royal edict designating the 13th of Adar to exterminate the Jews and plunder their possessions.

4. Mordechai tears his clothes and puts on sackcloth and ashes as a sign of public mourning. He sends a copy of the decree to Esther and asks her to intercede with the king (recognizing that to approach him without being summoned is to risk death). Esther tells Mordechai to ask the Jews to fast/pray for 3 days before she approaches the king.

5. King Achashverosh receives Esther and grants her virtually any request. She simply requests that he and Haman join her at a banquet. After the banquet, Haman sees Mordechai, who once again refuses to bow. After Haman recounts this to his wife Zeresh, she suggests that Mordechai be hung. The gallows are prepared.

6. When the king can’t sleep, he asks that the royal chronicles be read, at which time he learns for the first time of the plot that Mordechai foiled. That same night, Haman comes to the king to discuss hanging Mordechai. Before Haman can speak, the king tells Haman to honor Mordechai by dressing him in royal garments, placing him on a royal stallion, and personally leading him through the streets of Shushan (capital of Persia).

7. At the second banquet, Esther reveals her identity and announces that she and her people are about to be murdered, identifying Haman as her arch enemy. The king has Haman hung on the gallows that had been prepared for Mordechai.

8. Mordechai is named Prime Minister to replace Haman. A second royal edict is issued empowering the Jews to fight and kill anyone who would try to harm them.

9. On the 13th of Adar, (the day designated for the destruction of the Jews), the Jews are victorious over their enemies. Haman’s ten sons are hung. The 14th and 15th of Adar are designated to celebrate. Mordechai initiates the Purim practices of a festive meal, the exchange of gifts of food, and monetary gifts to the poor.

10. Persia flourishes. Mordechai’s role in the history of the Persian Empire is recorded in the king’s chronicles.

PURIM

PARSHAT TZAV SUMMARYT’rumat Hadeshen. The Kohanim were given the Mitzvah of “T’rumat Hadeshen” -- lifting the ashes of the daily “Korban Olah” (Consumed Offerings). They were

also told to keep the fire on the altar burning continuously.

The Kohanim’s Duties. Additional laws were given specifying the Kohanim’s duties and the portions of the offerings they were to receive as their due.

Installation Ceremony. In an impressive ceremony conducted in the Court of the Sanctuary, Aharon and his sons were installed in their offices by Moshe, with the people watching. After the Kohanim had bathed, Moshe dressed Aharon in his distinctive garments, and anointed the Mishkan and its contents. He then poured the anointing oil upon Aharon’s head. Finally, the regular Kohanim were invested with their garments. These rites were repeated for seven days, during which Aharon and the sons remained within the Court.

HALACHIC QUESTION OF THE WEEKQ: What is the minimum to fulfill Mishloach Manos? Do I need to send foods that have different berachos (blessings)?A: One must send two different foods to one person in order to fulfill the mitzvah. The foods need to be different like two different kinds of meat or of cake, but need not be two foods that require different berachos. The foods must be edible as is and not require further preparation or cooking. Drinks can be used for the mitzvah as well. Women are also obligated to send Mishloach Manos. If a couple is sending together, the note should indicate both names.

Please submit your question of the week on any topic to Rabbi Efrem Goldberg at [email protected]

LOCAL RABBIS TO SPEAK TO UNAFFILIATED JEWSOn Monday, March 24, six rabbis from some of the largest synagogues in Boca Raton will share a stage for one hour in front of a live audience comprised of mostly people that are not members of any synagogue. The program, called “A Night of Inspiration,” will be put on by the Boca Raton Jewish Experience, and sponsored by the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County.

The program will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on March 24 at the Olympic Heights High School Performing Arts Theater (20101 Lyons Road) in Boca Raton. The mission of the Boca Raton Jewish Experience is to enrich and inspire every Jew in Boca Raton by convening the community’s resources and by taking advantage of the existing Jewish Infrastructure.Rabbi Josh Broide, co-founder of the Boca Raton Jewish Experience, said: “This is such a big story for our community. I’ve been living in Boca for the last 15 years and this is the first time I have seen six of the rabbis of the largest synagogues get together and share a stage.”Broide continued: “What makes this even more exciting is that they are all working together to speak to an audience made up of people that are not members of their synagogues. It’s a collaborative effort to show the greater Jewish community some of the great things taking place that they might be missing. It’s not about each rabbi’s synagogue as much as it is about presenting Jewish thought to an audience that does not regularly receive it.”The rabbis involved are Rabbi David Baum of Congregation Shaarei Kodesh; Rabbi Yaakov Gibber of Boca Jewish Center/Shaaray Tefilla; Rabbi Efrem Goldberg of Boca Raton Synagogue; Rabbi Dan Levin of Temple Beth El of Boca Raton Rabbi Robert Silvers of Congregation B’nai Israel and Rabbi David Steinhardt of B’nai Torah Congregation.

The rabbis are all looking forward to the evening.Silvers said: “It is my hope that this night will truly be an inspiration. I hope it inspires hundreds of Jews to see the beauty and blessing of Judaism; to help our community understand the purpose and role of the synagogue in helping Jews connect with one another and God; and to know how desperately synagogues depend on the support of our community to be able to continue to teach and inspire this and future generations of Jews.”Steinhardt added: “The early part of the twenty-first century has us witnessing change at an unprecedented rate. Technology and science has created a new world. And in this new world people have as great a need to connect as ever. The importance of community remains, but the message and language of community needs to change to respond to the new realities.”Baum said: “There is so much beauty and diversity within our synagogues, and we want to build upon the amazing things we do by spreading the message to those who are not part of the established Jewish community. We do important and vital work through prayer, learning, acts of loving kindness, social justice and more. We want more people to join us to expand this work!”Gibber added: “I think that rabbis in general agree that it is our responsibility to be in touch with members of the greater Jewish community, however, there are a number of factors that make that difficult. Here, the BRJE is doing the legwork and is organizing the audience for us. The best part is that it’s being held in a neutral venue where the rabbis and participants can meet each other. I look forward to sharing an inspirational message and making new friends.”Levin said: “I am thrilled to share in this wonderful project. Our community is blessed to have such an extraordinary depth and quality to Jewish life. I hope this wonderful evening will inspire those who have yet to engage in all that our synagogues and Jewish community have to offer to become more invested in pursuing their own unique Jewish journeys and to supporting Jewish life here in South Florida.”Goldberg concluded: “Boca Raton Synagogue” and I are extremely proud to be participating in ‘A Night of Inspiration’ — an event that brings together diverse synagogues and specifically reaches out to the greater Jewish community and those unaffiliated. This is exactly what we need to be — a strong, vibrant and unified community.”Broide said to remind readers that this is a community outreach program intended for those individuals and families who currently are not affiliated with a synagogue.

The event is free to attend, but registration is required. For more information, visit www.myjewishexperience.org, or call Josh Broide at 561-702-3864.

ISRAEL UPDATE

SOCIAL ACTIONSunday March 30 is “BUY ISRAELI GOODS (BIG)” day . As in past years, the Social Action Committee will be asking local vendors to highlight Israeli products. In addition, together with Stand With Us this year, we are sponsoring an event from 11:00am-1:00pm at BRS. Dynamic lecturer, innovative thinker, and the host of Israel’s only English language broadcast radio talk show, YISHAI FLEISHER, will be our special guest. Mr. Fleisher’s analysis and commentary have been featured on CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, Russia Today, and Fox News TV. For seven years, he was Director of Israel National Radio (Arutz Sheva), where he built the station into one of the largest independent providers of radio content on Israel and the Middle East. An Israeli food tasting brunch will follow the program with Mr. Fleisher. Just two weeks before the beginning of Pesach, it is the perfect time to stock your pantry with products made in

Israel. Please remember to set aside time on the 30th to support BIG day.

PLEASE KEEP IN YOUR PRAYERSWRITE TO ALAN GROSS

Alan Gross has been in prison for over 1400 days. Now you are able to write to him via his website www.bringalanhome.org/write Aba Chonah ben Hava Chana - Alan Gross

American Jew Alan Gross has been wrongly held in a Cuban prison since December 2009. Since that time, Alan’s physical and emotional state has deteriorated. He has lost over one hundred pounds and has suffered partial paralysis. Join us to call upon the Cuban government and the international community for the immediate release of Alan on humanitarian grounds. For more information and to get involved, visit www.jcouncil.org

WRITE TO JONATHAN POLLARDYour letters - the only ray of light in Jonathan’s dreary cell. Write to him today: Jonathan Pollard #09185-016, c/o FCI Butner, P.O. Box 1000, Butner, North Carolina, U.S.A 27509-1000.

Yehonatan ben Malka - Jonathan Pollard.Jonathan Pollard has been imprisoned in the United States since 1987. While working as an American civilian intelligence analyst, Pollard has admitted to passing classified information to Israel. Although even his most ardent supporters agree that he was in the wrong and guilty, the nature and length of his imprisonment is

disproportionate and unparalleled. Join a multitude of prominent politicians, officials from the national intelligence world, and the legal world who have called for Pollard’s sentence to be commuted. For more information and to sign a petition, visit www.jonathanpollard.org.

WARREN WEINSTEINThe 72-year-old Weinstein, Yisrael Yitzchak ben Hannah Faygel, was a consultant for the US Agency for International Development in Pakistan when terrorists broke into his home in 2011 and dragged him away. Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has since claimed to be holding him. Weinstein made news in a just-released video in which he pleads for President Obama to help. No Jew should ever feel abandoned or forgotten. Please add him to your prayers.
