Boca Raton Synagogue • Valuing Diversity • Celebrating UnityPage 3

In the spirit of our mission “Valuing Diversity and Celebrating Unity,” we believe that a community is built on the collective engagement of individuals representing differing perspectives, whether religious, political, or social. As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L”Shem Shamayim,“ for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we.

“Derech Eretz,” good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a “safe place” for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue.

In line with our recently published Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. • Children should be asked not to walk between or climb through rows of seats in front of others who are seated during services to collect

candy.• Shabbat is a blessing bestowed by G-d on the Jewish people. To that end, we should strive to act in such a way that the beauty of Shabbat

is enhanced for all of us.All of these Mensch Messages have been submitted to the office. If you have a Mensch Message you would like us to promote, please email us at [email protected]

Donations can now also be made through our website www.bocaeruv.org or by contacting Chani Salamon at (561) 392-1026 for more information. Please help, as we ALL benefit from the Eruv. The Eruv is something we all rely on and often take for granted. If you have not yet contributed, please consider doing so in order to ensure that the Eruv can be checked and maintained.

BRS VOLUNTEER SECURITY TEAMWith the end of the holiday season, life is returning to its normal pace and regularity. As we begin this new year, we would like to encourage you to take a role in protecting the security of our community.

Please consider joining the security team and sacrificing a bit of your time for the betterment of your community. Trainings for new and existing recruits will recommence in the coming weeks. If you are not able to join the team, there are other ways to help.

Each of us needs to be aware of our surroundings. Please be aware of suspicious individuals and activities and report them to the synagogue staff or security team immediately.

For the parents in the community, please know where your children are at all times while on the synagogue campus. We had several incidence of young children attempting to leave the synagogue campus unaccompanied by their parents.

Everyone has a role to play in ensuring our communal safety and security. Please find your way to contribute and act on it.

SOCIAL ACTIONOne of Judaism’s holiest sites, Jerusalem’s Temple Mount and Western Wall, was recently reclassified as an exclusively Muslim shrine after UNESCO adopted a polarizing resolution that denies Jewish connection to the site.

The resolution, which condemns Israel for its activities in Jerusalem and the West Bank, asserts that Jerusalem is holy to three monotheistic religions: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, but it includes a special section pertaining to the Temple Mount that says the site is sacred only to Muslims and fails to mention it as sacred to Jews. The resolution from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization does not refer to the Al-Aqsa mosque by either the Hebrew term for the site—Har Habayit—or its English translation, the Temple Mount, but only by its Muslim name.

Several organizations have online petitions demanding that the UN recognize Judaism’s historical connection to the Temple Mount and Western Wall. Beginning with mussaf on Shemini Atzeret, we begin reciting משיב in the Shemoneh Esreh. The Gemara describes הרוח ומוריד הגשםthis addition as גבורות גשמים—mentioning the greatness of Hashem in His ability to bring rain (and together with it sustenance, prosperity, and wealth), but not necessarily a prayer requesting for rain. The request for rain—שאלת גשמים—is only inserted into the Shemoneh Esreh some time after Sukkot has ended. In Israel, it begins on the seventh of Heshvan and outside of Israel, we begin reciting ברך עלינו on December 4. If somebody accidentally forgot to recite משיב הרוח ומוריד הגשם, whether or not the Shemoneh Esreh needs to be repeated depends on what was said in its place. During the summer months, Sephardim recite מוריד הטל—praising Hashem’s ability to provide dew, while Ashkenazim don’t make such a mention. If a Sephardi forgot to mention משיב הרוח ומוריד הגשם, we presume that he said instead מוריד הטל, as he was used to doing for the past several months. Since he mentioned at least something about Hashem’s ability to provide water to the world, he need not repeat Shemoneh Esreh. However, we presume that an Ashkenazi who forgot to mention משיב הרוח ומוריד הגשם reverted back to what he was used to doing for the past several months and did not mention anything at all. Therefore, if he remembers only after recited the berakhah of מחיה המיתים, he needs to repeat Shemoneh Esreh.

PRAYER 1015 Steps to a New YOU!!

Rabbi Josh BroideBoca Raton Synagogue7:00 - 8:00pm

For more information & to registerwww.BRSonline.org/Prayer101

There are four primary misconceptions that prevent us from effectively communicating with our Creator through prayer. It feels like we are talking to a wall. Since we don’t actually see God or sense Him with any of our five senses, how can we have a conversation with Him? A one-way dialogue is awkward at best; at worst a little crazy. It makes no sense to pray to God if He knows our needs. He’ll either give us what we want if we need it, or He won’t if we don’t. How can prayer change His mind? God doesn’t seem to answer our prayers. Sometimes we pray for an ill person and he dies anyway. Or we pray for years to find a soul-mate or to have children and our requests go unanswered. So why keep trying? Standardized prayer is a drag. How can you have a natural conversation with someone if you don’t get to decide what to say and when to say it? That’s not called communication.

This series will explore each of these questions and see how a small change in perspective can make all the difference.

GREAT RIVALRIES OF JEWISH HISTORY

COMMUNICATING WITH EACH OTHER

One of the great, fundamental beliefs in Judaism is the notion of a machloket l’shem shamayim, an argument for the sake of heaven. Jewish history is replete with examples of rabbis vigorously arguing with each other over approaches to how religion should be practiced, how to grapple with modernity, or how to react to changing times and circumstances. This 12-week series will highlight and delve deeper into some of the great rivalries and disputes throughout our rich history. Whether you are a new to studying Jewish history or have an advanced background, this course will package and present Jewish history in a remarkable, unique, and not to be missed way.
