FROM THE RABBI’S DESKIn working with a particular pastor who is a great supporter of Israel, I have noticed something amazing. While rabbis and fellow Jews are often hesitant about offering blessings or prayers in public, leaders of other religions aren’t shy or reluctant at all. More than once in the context of a decisionthat needs to be made he has said to me, “Let’s pray.” When describing how he came to a certain position, idea, or plan, he has said, “I was looking for inspiration and so I prayed.” While obviously the style, content, and destination of his prayers are not in consonance with Judaism or Torah, there is something incredibly inspiring to me about his prayer. In contrast to so many of us whose prayers seem rote, dry, and dispassionate, my friend’s prayers are spontaneous, authentic, inspired, and very real.

How can we better tap into the potential of prayer? How can we transform our davening experience from habit and routine into a passionate experience that inspires our decisions and enthuses our lives? There are many answers and suggestions and they cannot possibly be covered comprehensively in this small space. However, allow me to offer two brief suggestions: The first is simple. If we want to have a chance at finding meaning in prayer, we need to know what we are saying. We must begin to approach the Siddur as a sefer, rather than as a script. A script is read, recited, memorized, and performed. A sefer is studied, learned, analyzed, and probed. Those of us who attended Day School were blessed with the opportunity to learn Chumash, Navi, Gemara, Ivrit, etc. But did we ever have a class with notes, quizzes, and testsdedicated to the Siddur? Is there a more important textbook in the history of our people than the Siddur? Sadly, most Day School graduates will likely never open a Navi or Gemara again. However, almost all will open the Siddur, some daily, some weekly and some only a few days

a year. And yet, while it is the most used text in the Jewish people, when it comes to study and comprehension, the Siddur is probably also the most neglected. To their credit, our schools are working diligently to provide creative ways our children can better connect to davening and to understand the Siddur. But what about adults? Is it too late? Absolutely NOT! Firstly, there are countless books being published as commentaries on the Siddur. I highly recommend “Rabbi Shimon Schwab on Prayer,” Rabbi Elie Munk’s “The World of Prayer,” the brand new Koren Rabbi Soloveitchik Siddur, the Koren Rabbi Sacks Siddur, and Lisa Aiken’s “The Art of Jewish Prayer,” just to name a few. Additionally, I invite you to join us this Shabbos for a new initiative to improve our davening. Our first “Beginner Again” Minyan, which will be a full davening with singing and spirit, and will feature introductions and explanations instead of a sermon, will take place at 9:20 AM in the BRS Social Hall. Assuming it is a success, we hope to host this Minyan every six weeks or so with a rotation of BRS Rabbis providing insights and understandings that can carryover and improve davening on a daily basis. My second suggestion is to come to Shul more often. You may be thinking,: if davening is difficult, rote and routine, how will doing it in Shul make it any better? Firstly, our environment makes a big difference. One cannot compare exercising at home alone with being pushed, motivated, and inspired by the energy and spirit at the gym. Similarly, I can speak from personal experience when I say that davening with a Minyan provides an energy, pace, and opportunity that are not felt when davening alone. Additionally, davening is like learning a musical instrument. It requires repetition, practice, and consistency. The more you play and the more you surround yourself with others who share a passion for music, the better you will be, the more inspired you will play, and the more you will enjoy and find meaning. Come to Shul daily in the morning, the evening, or both, and you will be part of a Chevra of people who are committed to being uplifted through prayer. There is no better way to start your day or bring it to a close than to connect with a community of people striving to grow together. The sense of discipline and positive feeling will spill over to the entire day and improve your life – I guarantee it. If you struggle to understand Hebrew, take a particular Tefillah and read it in English. If you only come to Shul on Shabbos, come during the week. If you only come in the morning, attend Mincha/Ma’ariv in the evening as well. If we work to understand what we are saying and consistently come to Minyan in Shul, I am confident we will see prayer as an indispensable part of our lives. Most importantly, let’s learn from my pastor friend and find meaning and purpose in prayer by adding spontaneity and passion. If you have a difficult decision to make, take a moment and pray. If you are looking for inspiration or help to get through a difficult day, take a moment and pray. Make this the year you become a “Beginner Again” and approach the Siddur in a way you never have before. Make this the year you become a “Minyanaire” and find the joy of attending Shul on a daily basis. I look forward to seeing you there. Shabbat Shalom

LECH LECHAJourney to Canaan. Hashem told Avrom to leave Choran and proceed to another land that Hashem would show him. Journey to Egypt. Because of a famine, Avrom and Sarai temporarily journeyed to Egypt. Avrom, fearful the Egyptians would kill him to take Sarai, told her to say that she was his sister. When they arrived in Egypt, Sarai was greatly admired and she was taken into Pharaoh’s royal household. However, when Pharaoh and his household were smitten with mysterious illnesses, Pharaoh sensed that something was wrong. When Pharaoh learned that Sarai was really Avrom’s wife and that his taking Sarai had caused this punishment, he asked Avrom, and his family to leave Egypt. Return to Canaan. Avrom and Sarai returned to the city of Bethel in Canaan. As both Avrom and Lot had become extremely wealthy and had many flocks and herds, there wasn’t enough pasture land for both of their herds and quarrels erupted between their herdsmen. To avoid conflict, Avrom suggested that he and Lot separate, and offered Lot the first choice of which land to settle. Battle of the Kings. A battle erupted between five kings on the one hand, and four kings on the other hand. The latter was victorious and took into possession all possessions and food of S’dome and Amorah and much of its populace, including Lot. Hearing of his nephew’s plight, Avrom rallied his men and defeated Kedorlaomer and the others, freeing among others Lot. The King of S’dome went out to greet Avrom, offering him all of the possessions which he had freed in his victory. Avrom, however, refused any rewards for his efforts. Avrom’s Heirs. Despite all of his good fortune, Avrom was still saddened by the fact that he was childless. Hashem then took Avrom outside and told him to look up at the sky and count the stars. “Surely you cannot count them,” said Hashem, “so many will be your children.” Hashem then made a covenant with Avrom (the Covenant Between The Halves), wherein He informed Avrom that his descendants would temporarily be enslaved in a foreign land, but that they would emerge with great wealth. Sarai & Hagar. Because Sarai was childless, she suggested that Avrom take Hagar (Sarai’s maid) as a second wife. When Hagar became pregnant, she became disrespectful to Sarai. This bothered Sarai greatly, and she complained to Avrom, who returned Hagar to Sarai’s authority. Sarai dealt harshly with her, and Hagar fled. An angel of Hashem appeared to Hashem and told her to return, promising that the son Yishmael that she would bear would be the founder of a large nation.Bris Milah. At age 99, Hashem renewed the covenant with Avrom, changing his name to Avraham (“father of a multitude of nations”). Hashem commanded Abraham to circumcise himself and all other male members of his household. Hashem also told Abraham that Sarai would now be known as Sarah (“princess for all”).

BRS OUTREACH REVOLUTION Making the Most of PrayerHave you ever considered what you are really saying when you are davening? Have you wondered about the customs of our prayers? Have you thought about the significance of the phrases we use as we pray? If you have, the Explanatory Service is for you. If you haven’t - the Explanatory Service is certainly for you! We spend so much time in prayer each day. Shouldn’t we try our best to make the most of prayer? The Explanatory Service enables us to do just that! After providing everyone with important background of the tefillah and explaining the

applicable laws and customs, we offer a broad and enlightening array of eye-opening insights into the rich meaning of the prayer, culled from the Talmud, commentators, sages throughout the ages.

We are all familiar that teffilah is called Avodah Shebalev, “service of the heart”, but why? Teffillah is classified as service because it requires the action of moving one’s lips and enunciating the words. Nevertheless, recitation of the words is not the most integral aspect of teffilah. The concentration that one has while praying is of far greater significance. I’m so excited because this week Rabbi Goldberg will be running the first ever BRS “Beginner Again Minyan” on Shabbat morning at 9:20 am in the Social Hall. We are all really excited to get back into davening and begin that journey towards a more meaningful teffilah. If you feel that this is something that you are looking for, then I hope you can join us for the weekly Explanatory Service that I run each week in the WYHS Katz library at 10:00 am. I hope that you are inspired to take the first step, and I look forward to seeing you on Shabbat morning.

HALACHIC QUESTIONS OF THE WEEKQ: If I am not sure if my cholent is fully cooked, what can I do to check in on it on Friday night? If it is dry, can I add water?

A: The Rabbis forbade anything that would accelerate the cooking process as an extension of the pro-hibition to cook on Shabbos. Therefore, it is prohibited to stir the contents of a pot while on the fire or in the crockpot. The proper way to check on the cholent and to be able to return it is to remove the pot, keep in mind your intention to return it, don’t allow it to cool off, make sure it is fully cooked, and place it on the counter and preferable hold on to it. If the cholent looks dry, it is permissible to take hot water from the urn and add it to the cholent. However, this can only be done when the pot is off the fire or out of the crockpot.

Please submit your question of the week on any topic to Rabbi Efrem Goldberg at [email protected]

SOCIAL ACTIONWe were proud to host acclaimed journalist Caroline Glick last Thursday night at our very first event of 5773. Ms. Glick, a much sought after speaker with a deep understanding of the American Israeli relationship, gave a powerful presentation before a very large audience. Many thanks to all who helped make the program possible with their sponsorship contributions. Special thanks to our corporate sponsor OMG

Fast. Kudos to Anna Cohen and Carol Kahn, who spearheaded the drive to bring Ms. Glick to BRS and worked so hard to make it happen. We hope that more BRS members will come forward and attend sac meetings, so that we can continue to take action on issues relating to the peace, justice and security of Israel. Our next meeting will be Wednesday November 14th. Details to follow. We welcome suggestions about programming for future events. Please leave messages in the sac suggestion box in the lobby. PLEASE KEEP IN YOUR PRAYERSAba Chonah ben Hava Chana - Alan GrossAmerican Jew Alan Gross has been wrongly held in a Cuban prison since December 2009. Since that time, Alan’s physical and emotional state has deteriorated. He has lost over one hundred pounds and has suffered partial paralysis. Join us to call upon the Cuban government and the international community for the immediate release of Alan on humanitarian grounds. For more information and to get involved, visit www.jcouncil.org

Yehonatan ben Malka - Jonathan PollardJonathan Pollard has been imprisoned in the United States since 1987. While working as an American civilian intelligence analyst, Pollard has admitted to passing classified information to Israel. Although even his most ardent supporters agree that he was in the wrong and guilty, the nature and length of his imprisonment is disproportionate and unparalleled. Join a multitude of prominent politicians, officials from the national intelligence world and the legal world who have called for Pollard’s sentence to be commuted. Celebrating Our Teens by Rabbi Uri PilichowskiThis Week We Celebrate Our Students’ Trip to DC This week we celebrate our BRS teens that are travelling to Washington and Arlington, VA for AIPAC’s High School Summit. An annual summit that attracts over 400 teens from all across America, the Summit attempts to educate and inspire teens to become Israel advocates. The summit is held in Arlington, VA across the street from the Pentagon. Various speakers and experts address the teens and update them on the latest developments in Israel, America and the Middle East. The highlight for many teens are the 60 student leader representatives from across the country that come to speak to the teens at a massive college fair about their respective schools and the Israel advocacy that takes place on their campuses. I celebrate the BRS teens that are joining a larger delegation of students from Hillel Community Day School and teens from as far away as Minnesota. It gives me great hope to know how many of our teens care and are willing to travel far and fall behind in school to work towards something greater than themselves .

BOCA RATON, FL - Boca Raton Synagogue youth enjoyed a great animal show to celebrate the learning and completion of Sedrat Noach. After studying about all the different animals that were created in Sedrat Bereshit and the different animals that went on Noach’s Ark, the youth got first hand exposure to the animals that went on the Ark. Ducks, chickens, endangered turtles all starred in the animal show.

The show attracted over 250 kids who came from as close as the Circle and as far as Miami Beach. The highlight of the show wasn’t just the great pizza and snacks, but the runaway goats who loved the kids so much, they didn’t want to leave. The animal show has been a highlight of BRS Youth for years and it was great to see the tradition continue.Wild Wild Animal Show
