sinopsis

Bodas de sangre (Blood Wedding) is a tragedy written in verse and prose by the Spanish writer Federico García Lorca written in 1931. It premiered on March 28, 1933 at the Beatriz Theater in Madrid by the company of Josefina Díaz and Manuel Collado and was led by Edmundo Guibourg in 1938, starring the Lorca´s muse Margarita Xirgu, who premiered it in Barcelona.

It is a poetic and theatrical production that focuses on the analysis of a tragic feeling. It is framed in a tragic and universal Andalusian landscape. The main theme addressed in this great drama is life and death. But in an arcane and ancestral way, which contains myths, legend and landsca-pes that introduce the reader into a world of dark passions that lead to jealousy, persecution and the tragic end: death. Love stands out as the only force that can overcome it.The work includes some customs of the author’s land, which still remain. All this from symbolic objects that announce the tragedy. The obses-sion with the dagger, the knife and the razor is constant in Lorca’s work, which in Blood Weddings attracts fascination and, at the same time, presages death. The tragic and real events, which the work of Lorca could be based on, occurred on the 22nd of July 1928 in Cortijo del Fraile, Níjar, Almería. Lorca knew them through the press, although the Almerian writer and activist Carmen de Burgos, originally from Níjar, had already written a short novel about the event before Blood Weddings, called Puñal de carnales, which was also inspiration for the author from Granada .
