Principal Assistant Principal
Dear Bodkin Families,
It is hard to believe that May is upon us! Our students continue to make great strides and grow in all academic areas. While the end of the year is in sight, please help keep that drive to succeed in the forefront.
PARCC testing is in session. Our third graders completed the English Language Arts portion of the assessment. We are so proud of their efforts! PARCC testing will continue through the month of May for our third, fourth, and fifth graders. Please see the testing schedule for specific dates.
The elementary intentional focus continues to be reading on grade level. Students will participate in the second administration of F&P testing. We are excited to see how much our students have grown as readers.
Speaking of readers, this year, Bodkin will continue to build upon our culture of literacy with our second year of the “One School, One Book” project. Ms. Kobrin and Ms. Baisden will be sharing more information about this project very soon. Be on the lookout ☺
There is plenty of fun packed into the end of the school year as well. There are several field trips scheduled at each grade level; Kinder Park, Arlington Echo, St. Mary’s City, Poplar Island. We have also been invited to attend the Green School Celebration at Sandy Point State Park. That’s right… we renewed our application and continue to be a Green School!!! Big thank you to our Green School Committee who led the charge when completing the application and highlighting all of the efforts that our school has made to support and protect the environment. Thank you to parents for supporting us with this process as well. I am looking forward to this weekend’s Environmental Fair.
Shout out to our Girls on the Run who didn’t let a little bit of rain stop them from running in the GOTR 5K. Also, good luck to our Seaperch Club who will test out the underwater robots this week. Great job and good luck!
And of course, one of the biggest weeks in May is Teacher Appreciation Week! We are very fortunate to have an incredible team of educators who work hard to provide the best learning opportunities for our students. Please help me in recognizing our teachers and letting them know just how much we appreciate them.
We have lots to celebrate and even more activities and events to look forward to—traditionally this time of year students sometimes struggle with showing expected behaviors. Please revisit and talk about expectations for your child’s academic performance as well as expected behaviors. It is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your continued support as we continue to move forward and work to close out the school year successfully!
Sincerely, Andrea Roche, Principal
Bodkin’s Mission is to

being at Bodkin by 9:15 am. Please plan on staying until noon. AACPS security procedures require that visitors to
our building and property at any time when children are in school must be signed in through the RAPTOR system.
Pre-registration will speed up the process by allowing us to print your visitor sticker ahead of time, but we must
still verify your identification when you arrive. Bring your license and have it ready at the door. Attendees who do
not pre-register will need to be fully processed and will potentially experience long delays. Thank you!

The Last Day of School for Bodkin. . . . June 14, 2019 June 14, 2019 is the last day of school for Bodkin students. There will be a 2-hour early dismissal
on the last two days of school. All students will be dismissed at 2:00 PM on Thursday, June 13
and Friday, June 14. New this year, Grade 5 promotion will take place at 4:00 pm on Thursday,

distributed to the fifth grade class from our fifth grade teaching team.
Media Announcements The end of the year is extra busy in Library as we wrap up classes and our book clubs! There are a few important dates to keep in mind.
May 17: Last day to turn in Chessie or Black-eyed Susan papers. May 24: Last day for student book checkout
June 3: Due date for all library books.
PARCC Testing Days in May 1. PARCC Testing Days continue in May. Our 3rd graders completed the ELA assessments in April. The PARCC Testing Days for May
are listed below. It is important that students are present and punctual on testing days. If a student is absent, he/she will take the assessments in make-up sessions. However, it is best for students to be in school on testing days and to take the assessment with their peers.
2. Students are encouraged to eat a good breakfast as research shows that students who eat a good breakfast are more focused and perform better in school.
3. Students will need to wear headphones
during the English Language Arts testing for PARCC. While we do have headphones here at school, it is helpful and more sanitary for the students to have their own personal set. Please check with your child to see that he/she has a pair of working headphones at school. If a student does not have a pair, we will be happy to provide them with a pair.
Thank you for your support! Spirit Sticks on the PlayGround
We’re having our Spirit Stick Sale on the Playground for students to purchase spirit sticks during their recess.
There will be a limited quantity of each stick. Students should come with money in a baggie, ready to make a quick
purchase so they can enjoy recess time as well. CASH ONLY! Sticks and change will be put in their baggies and
sent to their classroom by the end of the day so they are not lost. Visit BodkinPTA.com to preview the selection.

One School One Book On Tuesday, May 7 we will kick-off of our second annual One School One Book event! This event with run from May 7 through May 17. We are so excited to begin this national event here at Bodkin to promote family reading and a love of reading in our students! We hope you and your family will join in the fun and partake in this reading experience with us! See below for a few FAQs.
1. What is One School One Book? One School One Book is a schoolwide literacy initiative to promote the importance of family reading and reading aloud. Through the generous support of our PTA, every student will receive a copy of the book chosen for this year. Families are asked to read the assigned chapters each night. Each morning, there will be trivia questions based on the previous night’s reading. Students with correct answers will be entered into raffles each day. In addition to trivia questions, students will participate in discussion questions in their classrooms and during lunch. 2. What is the book title?
The book title will be revealed at a kick-off assembly on Tuesday, May 7. The first few chapters of the book will be read aloud to the students to get them started. 3. How do we participate?
A calendar with assigned chapters will be sent home in the book. Keep up with the chapters each night and your child will be ready for the classroom conversations the following day.

SPOTLIGHT May is here and it is time to wrap up another
school year. As you know, May 7 through May 11 is teacher appreciation week. The
Bodkin office wants to take this opportunity to sing the praises of all of our teachers,
including homeroom teachers, cultural arts & media teachers, special education teachers, and teaching assistants. It is a joy to work with such a supportive and giving group. Each day we see personal sacrifices and random acts of kindness throughout the
building that inspire and transform our own personal goals and actions. Bodkin’s
environment is one of optimism and positive reinforcement, which can only be maintained by positive and optimistic personalities. We feel lucky to work with such quality teachers.
You are appreciated! Thank you Bodkin teachers!

There are always new and exciting things happening in the PTA, please check the website and Facebook for updates throughout the year. If you need to contact me, please email me at [email protected] with any questions, concerns, or if you would like to become a volunteer! Two years ago, I was preparing for the role of PTA President; I was a bit nervous at the time commitment and my lack of overall PTA experience as it was my first year as a Bodkin parent. But I decided that it would be a good experience for my kids to see me fill this role, it would allow me to have lots of input in decisions that affect my kids, and hopefully show them what it means to serve in the community. And this experience did all of that. What I had not expected was to love it. I learned so many names of all of your children, I made relationships with other parents, I now know many of the teachers, and I developed great relationships with many of the people who take care of the 580 students at Bodkin every day. I love coming into Bodkin and seeing the kids in line, I love hearing that they had a blast at Santa Saturday or Trunk or Treat. We have some really amazing kids and I have absolutely loved being a part of a group that is dedicated to supporting them at school. As my term ends, I encourage you to give it a try! There is a need for someone to step into this role and I know it sounds overwhelming, but it is truly an experience worth having. We have a great school, I cannot say enough how wonderful it is. If you are interested in becoming the next PTA President, or even just volunteering, you may find that you love it too! Sincerely, Corine Frank PTA President

DID YOU KNOW?• Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
• Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read.
• Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.
• Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
• Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help children do well in high school, college, and at work.
Help Your Child Succeed in School:Build the Habit of Good Attendance EarlySchool success goes hand in hand with good attendance!
WHAT YOU CAN DO• Set a regular bed time and morning routine.
• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
• Find out what day school starts and make sure your child has the required shots.
• Introduce your child to her teachers and classmates before school starts to help her transition.
• Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
• If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
• Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
• Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
When Do Absences Become a Problem?
CHRONIC ABSENCE 18 or more days
WARNING SIGNS 10 to 17 days
SATISFACTORY 9 or fewer absences
Note: These numbers assume a 180-day school year.
