A fifth-generation orchardist andexperienced horticulturist, Jim Riderenjoys a reputation as a savvy, innovative apple grower. He is anadept and enthusiastic grafter, and hasmade strategic selections to produce asuccession of varieties that ripen onthe Central California Coast whencustomers in other climates crave them.

He saves on labor and equipment bygrowing on rootstock that yields smaller trees and by keeping the orchards pruned to a maximum of seven or eight feet tall. Thereby eliminating the need for ladders during pruning, thinning, harvesting, and other operations.

Accustomed to making frequentproactive adjustments to everchangingmarket and environmental conditions, Rider converted all of his orchards to organic production in the wake of the public awareness over the spraying of Alar on apples in 1989.

Rider collaborated with UC Santa Cruzentomologist Sean Swezey for ten years of organic field research trials. They pioneered a pheromone-based mating disruption system to control codling moth infestation. Rider has also experimented with hedgerows as a method of enhancing biological pest control.

As a grower and shipper of organicfresh market apples in Santa CruzCounty’s Pajaro Valley, Bruce Rider &Sons is currently a rarity. Pressured bythe apple industry’s shifting economics of scale, many of the valley’s formerlyabundant orchards have given way to berry fields; others now supply apples only for juicing and processing. Jim Rider grows seventy-five acres of Mcintosh, Honeycrisp, Jonagold, Braeburn, Fuji, and other varieties well suited to the local climate. His brother Dick runs the company’s packing operation, handling some seventy-five percent of the organic apples in California.

GMO Apples?A Canadian biotech company recentlydeveloped a GMO apple that doesn’tbrown when cut or bruised. OkanaganSpecialty Fruits, based inSummerland, British Columbia., isseeking approval from USDAregulators for its genetically altered,non-browning “Arctic” apple variety. Ontheir website they state:

“The fact that they don’t turn brown willreduce the cost of fresh-cut preparation and improve the quality of these products...a non-browning apple will

even produce a tastier, truercolouredapple juice or sauce.”

Sliced apple industry giants such as Crunch Pak are interested in this GMO technology. Crunch Pak is the largest sliced apple producer in the United States. They claim one apple, sliced into 12 pieces, currently has a 21-day shelf life in their double layer plastic packaging after

treatment in a water bath with calcium and vitamin c added.

Andrew Kimbrell, executive director of the Center for Food Safety said the non-browning technology appears to benefit

apple growers, shippers, and processors more than consumers by allowing companies to sell apples that are older than they look.

Now, for those of you that still prefer touse a chopping block and a knife, alittle lemon juice spritzed on thoselovely apple slices will keep them kidfriendly and fresh until lunchtime andbeyond.

Good Earth is a one-stop shoppingparadise for vegans and rawists. Ourknowledgeable staff can assist you! Look for pink VEGAN labels on our shelves to help direct you. We have a section devoted exclusively to RAW foods in our Grocery and several in our Fridge.

Vegans and rawists report severalhealth benefits from their dietarychoices:Vegan rawists feel that once a food iscooked, its content is altered and isnot as nutritious. Raw foods are rich infiber, enzymes, and antioxidants, andare closest to the gatherer diet of ourancestors. Vegans and vegan rawistsalso claim that meat is unnecessaryand even harmful for human health, and some feel that their mental andphysical health has improved knowingthat they are not participating in theexploitation of animals.

Vegans and vegan rawists feel thatanimal products carry risks associatedwith the use of hormones, antibiotics, and diseases common in factory farms. Some feel that humans were not meant to digest animal products and point to that as a major cause of human illness and disease.

Both of these diets are increasinglypopular and many folks are increasingthe percentage of raw and vegan foods in their diet to gain some of the health advantages that these foods provide.

Veganism is a dietary choice andlifestyle. Vegans eliminate all animalproducts from their diet. This usuallyincludes all dairy products, meat, eggsand fish. The most common reasons for becoming a vegan are human health, ethical/spiritual issues pertaining to animal welfare, factory farming and animal testing.

The unsustainable use of land andresources for grain-fed meat production as illustrated in Diet for a Small Planet, a 1971 bestselling book by Frances Moore Lappé is yet another ethical reason for the vegan lifestyle. This was the first book toexpose the enormous waste built intoU.S. meat production.

Vegans will find nearly every possibleingredient at Good Earth for deliciousmeals from our extensive selection ofbulk grains, pastas, seeds, nuts and nut butters, beans, legumes, produce, and meat alternatives. Our Kitchen has a complete vegan menu as well.

Raw foodism or rawism is a lifestyleand diet consisting of uncooked andunprocessed foods. Raw foodism is usually equated with raw veganism in which only raw plant foods are eaten. A small percentage of raw foodists include all foods in their raw form, including raw dairy products and raw fish.

Good Earth sells a wide variety of rawfoods, most of which are gluten-freeand organic. A sample of our offeringsincludes hearty granolas, dried berries, raw nuts, cacao, sprouted pumpkinand sunflower seeds, cookies, foodbars and crackers. We have sproutedrice, sprouted rice flour, and in produce a complete organic fruit and vegetable selection. Our Kitchen provides raw food options in our cold bar and specialties in our fridge. Organic Pastures Raw Milk isNOT pasteurized or homogenized! The McAfee family produces delicious and nutritious raw milk from their individually named and pasture-raised cows on their farm near Fresno, California.

Mark McAfee of Organic Pasturesbelieves pasteurization was introduced for the purpose of killing tuberculosis bacteria in milk, but has continued for just two reasons: it allows producers and industrial agriculture to lower their cleanliness standards since heating the milk kills bacteria caused by contamination, and it extends the shelf life of the milk from less than five days to about two weeks. So in other words, for the benefit of industrial agriculture and their profits, not health.

He also feels the pasteurizationprocess which heats the milk to 160degrees Farenheit destroys enzymes in the milk needed by our body for theassimilation of the lactose and calcium. Mike says pasteurizing milk kills the beneficial probiotics lactobacillus and acidophilus, Vitamin A, Vitamin B complex, and Vitamin C.

Most milk is homogenized to blend inthe cream so it doesn’t separate. Some believe that this process creates a change in the digestability of the milkfat and can cause damage to the cardiovascular system.

Raw milk producers in CA and theother 21 states that allow it to be sold are tested at the highest frequency and scope to safeguard our health.

Good Earth’s customers rave aboutraw milk, offering testimonials abouttheir kids and loved ones’ allergies and health problems disappearing after they switched to raw milk.

Good Earth partners with theFishwise program, a color-codedsystem consisting of green, yellow andred labeling for seafood based on thefollowing sustainability ratings.GREEN signs are “best choices”meaning they are abundant, well managed and caught or farmed inenvironmentally friendly ways.YELLOW signs are “good alternatives”although there are concerns regardinghow they are caught or farmed.RED signs are deemed “unsustainable” by the scientists at Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch because they are overfished, caught or farmed in ways that harm other marine life or the environment.

For example, shark has a red rating. Itis in severe decline from overfishing(for the meat and the fins) and haselevated levels of mercury and othercontaminants.

Health benefits of eating fishStudies show that fish consumptionlowers the risk of death from heartdisease by 36 percent. The oils insome fish appear to help bloodfrom clotting by reducing the stickinessof the blood. The most beneficial fishin this context is oily fish such assalmon or mackerel. The research alsosuggests that eating fish or increasing fish oil intake can reduce mortality.

In the heart of winter, a full-bodied,“Big Red” is usually the mostfrequently requested wine here fromGood Earth’s small but growing winesection. We have a small but growingpremier selection of wines, primarilymade from organic, biodynamic, orsustainable grapes.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and some Zinfandels—mostly locally produced here in California are the red varietals to watch for.

A full-bodied red will exhibit the highest tannin content, often mistaken by our palate as high alcohol, along with a lingering or a heavy/weighty mouthful. Big attractive aromas come with bigwines. They are usually higher in

alcohol, but it’s the tannins one tastes on the palate.

This month, we continue to feature Kunde Winery’s 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, a sustainably produced wine. Velvety rich and laced with adecadent chocolate character, it has great fruit and spice. It will certainly be excellent for years

to come, if you’re inclined to stash a bottle or two away. Good Earth’s current sale price of $19.98 is a great value!

We also are featuring a CabernetSauvignon from Vin de ManiesWinery, produced from organic grapes grown in the Silverado Trail

region in Napa. There are many super wine deals out there, but few in this class. This 2003 Cabernet will only continue to get better and at our current $13.98 price, it’s a steal!

Other big-red monsters to look for here at Good Earth are:

• Lolonis Cabernet Sauvignon ‘07organic, Redwood Valley. $17• Ceago Cabernet Sauvignon ‘05biodynamic, Lake County. $37• Benziger Cabernet Sauvignon ’06biodynamic, Glen Ellen. $20• Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon ’06organic, Napa Valley. $54• Patiana Syrah ’04biodynamic,Mendocino County. $21• Clockspring Zinfandel ’06organic, Amador County. $19

NOW is passionate about makingquality products that are affordable. As a family owned, private company,NOW has invested over $1 million forquality control in 2000 alone!

Good Earth sells a wide variety ofNOW nutritional supplements, and our customers have made it our number one selling brand. Quality and price! Vitamin D-3, Calcium-Magnesium, and Lecithin are some of Good Earth’s most popular NOW products.

Since NOW’s prices are so low, some feel that the quality must be compromised. This view of NOW isunderstandable. When other comparable firms are charging 30-40% higher everyday prices, it seems that something must be amiss.

NOW’s prices are significantly lower than competing brands, because you do get what you pay for! The difference can be accounted for in costs not passed to the consumer for multilevel marketing prices whichfactor in extra layers of distribution like 12-15% of product price foradvertising, pay for excessive on-the road salespeople who can add another 10% to the product’s cost, and high profit margins that public supplement companies demand to satisfy millions of shareholders.

disease including high blood pressure or blood fats, diabetes, or smoking. After six months, while the placebo group had not improved, the antioxidant group had more flexible blood vessels, lower blood pressure, better blood sugar control, and an 18 percent increase in HDL, the good cholesterol.

Omega-3s reduce chances of heart diseaseWhen oxygen free-radicals overwhelm the antioxidant defenses of the body, oxidative stress occurs, producing inflammation, researchers in this study said. Doctors believe that the anti-inflammatory action of omega-3s lowers oxidative stress and chances of cardiovascular disease.

Curcumin reduced OA symptoms and inflammationIn this study, 50 people with OA took a curcumin-phosphatidylcholine supplement containing 200 mg of curcumin per day, or a placebo. After three months, while the placebo group showed modest improvement, the curcumin group reported 58 percent better symptom scores, and had a fourfold increase in the distance they could walk on a treadmill at a slight incline, adding about 839 feet. In a subgroup with inflammation, levels of inflammatory C-reactive protein decreased 93 percent among those who took curcumin.

Blueberries Improved Metabolic SyndromeBlueberries have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that can help those with metabolic syndrome, doctors in this study said. Thirty obese men and women with metabolic syndrome and mildly elevated blood pressure took about 2 ounces of freeze-dried blueberries in 16 ounces of water per day, or a placebo. The blueberry drink contained 1624 mg of blueberry phenolics and 742 mg of anthocyanins, equal to about 12 ounces of fresh blueberries. After eight weeks, the blueberry group had decreases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure nearly four times greater than placebo, and lower blood levels of oxidized fats.

Fiber lowered chances of colorectal cancerIn this study, researchers compared 579 people who developed colorectal cancer more than one year after beginning to keep a daily food diary to a group of healthy people of the same age, sex, and similar health factors. People who consumed 24 grams of fiber per day were 30 percent less likely to develop colorectal cancer than those who consumed 10 grams of fiber per day.

Antioxidant supplement improved blood fats, sugar control, and pressureResearchers said antioxidants may alleviate artery damage from oxygen free-radicals and in this study gave 70 people an antioxidant supplement containing 500 mg of vitamin C, 200 IU of vitamin E, 100 mcg of selenium, and 60 mg of coenzyme Q10 per day, or a placebo. Participants had at least two factors that raised chances for heart
