ABOUT ANULA Anula Maiberg was born in Israel and moved to NYC in 2001 in order to pursue a career in photography. While working on her degree at the School of Visual Arts she fell in love with Pilates through the classes and private sessions she took around the city. After receiving her Masters in Fine Art from the Royal College in London and a few years at a "desk" job she realised happiness wasn't in front of the computer screen. She decided to attend the Kane School for Core Integration (Kinected) to become a fully certified teacher. She graduated in 2009. After several years teaching she was accepted into the Kathy Grant Heritage Training Masers and graduated in 2014. In 2017 Anula started a world tour. Spanning all over the US, Canada, Europe, UK and Australia. She's been hosted by Polestar, Breathe Education, Balanced Body, Stott – and now Body Control Pilates! Anula is passionate about upholding the traditions and principles of Pilates while being able to update and personalise them for the needs of her students. She also feels strongly about volunteering her time to the LGBTQ community and believes Pilates is a wonderful movement modality and a tool for healing in a supportive environment.

Workshop Descriptions: Anula Maiberg

Where should I be feeling this: Flow for Uncertain Times What's wrong with that question? Why is it ok to politely decline to answer? Pilates is a practice, a lifestyle and a method of movement. We are not healers, doctors or therapists. We teach Pilates and that is more than enough. Do we "owe" our students a "burn"? Does "not feeling" it mean a movement has no value? Is it within our scope of practice to tailor a session to our student's individual nervous systems? Are our student's feelings or lack of feeling or feeling in the "wrong" places facts? Can we help our students find a better more useful vocabulary for sensation, pain, muscle activation and harm? Why is one muscle better than another? Lower back sensation is bad. Abdominal sensation is good. Neck sensation is bad. Tricep sensation is good. These are value judgments. What are they based on and how can we guide a session with less sensation-based judgments?

Pilates Partnering: how to build a community in the classroom or studio As group classes on the apparatus and the Mat become larger and larger, we need to grow with the times. The issue is that there is only one teacher to any number of students. We cannot spot everyone. Does this mean we need to "dumb" down our teaching? Will group class students never advance from the basics because no one can look out of their safety? In this workshop, we will tackle some easy to grasp ideas on how to give students the tools they need to support each other. They will need to leave their own Mat or Reformer and walk over to another human and potentially lend a hand. This type of assistance between students helps build a community in the classroom. Familiar strangers become friends. The sometimes remover or isolated idea of the Pilates experience becomes more open and warm. This feeling of community helps with student retention rates and overall happiness. Students leave class feeling supported, worked out and educated on some more advanced movements they could not do alone or with only one teacher in the room.

Mythbusting your Pilates Practice:

• How do we define Pilates as a profession?

• Are we teachers of exercises or skills?

• What are the skills we teach in various apparatus exercises?

• Are practitioners of the Pilates Method students or clients? Why is the distinction important?

• Are we teachers or instructors? Why is the distinction important?

• Where did the myth of Pilates being "good for the core" start?

• Can we/should we teach what we cannot personally do? Does it matter?

• Where the original choreography is abstracted to the point of no longer being recognisable, is it still Pilates? And why the answer is yes and no.

ABOUT CARA Cara is the owner and Master Teacher at Pilates Aligned, Inc. in Denver, Colorado. She has earned a BA in Dance from Sarah Lawrence College and an MFA in Dance from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. It was at NYU that Cara began her initial studies in the Pilates Method with first generation Master Teacher, Kathleen Stanford Grant. Cara continued to study with her mentor, Ms. Grant, until her death in 2010. In 1993, Cara moved to Boulder, Colorado where she continued her Pilates training at The Pilates Center. After certification, Cara taught at the Center for six years and it was during this time that she began to develop her own work, greatly influenced by her teacher, Kathy Grant. In 2000 Cara opened the first Pilates Aligned studio in Denver where, today, Cara and her staff teach a growing clientele. In addition, Cara mentors visiting professionals and hosts a variety of Continuing Education workshops. As a second-generation Pilates instructor and lineage carrier of the Kathy Grant work, Cara is a well-respected and highly sought-after member of the worldwide Pilates industry. In addition, she has served on the faculty of Naropa University, where she taught courses in dance and movement studies. She herself is a modern dancer and choreographer, primarily, creating and performing in the Denver area – often at the invitation of fine arts and dance-space venues. Cara has also been a serious student of Yoga for more than 8 years, helping to round out her own knowledge of mind-body science.

Workshop Descriptions: Cara Reeser

Lower Extremities: Exploring Leg Alignment Disparities using the Reformer and Low Chair In this workshop we will examine common structural variations, such as genu valgum (“knock knees”), genu varum (“bow legs”) and hyperextension. We will learn how to identify these variations and incorporate and adapt our Pilates reformer and low chair protocols to accommodate them, as appropriate. Simple anatomical review of the lower extremity will be offered along with effective cues, images, and exercises that will work to balance and control leg alignment during movements that provide external forces on the knees that are both hard to control and recognise. Participants should be Reformer-qualified.

Pilates Protocols for a Stronger Neck A strong and supple spine must include our necks! Adequate neck strength and alignment helps facilitate freedom and pain relief in the neck and upper shoulders. In this course, we will learn: exercises, images and cues to help our clients build neck strength and control in all ranges of motion. We will understand how current, popular cuing that leads to the over-correction of our shoulder complex often thwarts our ability to use our necks well, resulting in a restricted range of motion for the rest of our spine. Basic anatomy of the neck and shoulder complex will be reviewed. Smart and effective movement protocols will be explored.

Friday 5th October 2018:

10.00 – 17.00 Dynamic Stability: Should we be cueing Muscles?

(6 hours plus breaks – full title and description on next page. CPD: A30)

Dynamic Stability: Should we be cueing Muscles? Research continues to define the Myofascial Slings, and their 3D role in Lumbar-Pelvic Stability through force closure of the Sacro-Illiac Joint. Asymmetry of the slings can be a permanent strategy to compensated for lack of mobility and instability. Understanding and integrating the Myofascial Slings are essential to train stability in movement. The communication of the slings 3-dimensionally is also essential for functional and efficient movement. In a practical workshop that will give you simple tools, Daniel will explain Pectoral Girdle Kinematics and Function and help you learn how to assess and integrate the Myofascial Slings 3- dimensionally. Learn how with just hand, elbow and shoulder positioning, we can start to integrate and activate specific Myofascial Slings, to increase Dynamic Lumbar Pelvic Stability during movement, without cueing. Finally, we will also learn how using Foot Position can bias Specific Chains.

ABOUT DANIEL Daniel is based in Australia. After completing a BSc in Anatomy and Physiology, Daniel continued Postgraduate studies in Neuroscience, Molecular Biology and Osteopathy. In private practice, he continued his studies with Myofascial and Cranial Sacral Techniques. Daniels interest was in how compensatory patterns translate to physiological and functional change, and looked at ways treatment and rehabilitative exercise could be used to address these. In the late 90’s, Daniel began work with a Spinal and Orthopaedic Company, that lead to him working around the world with top surgeons, and the development of Surgical Devices. His return to Australia led him to commence development of a device that acted as a bio-feedback or self-regulating device, that acted as an unstable base, to be used in both Rehabilitation and Functional Exercise. The Oov was launched. Daniel now works with leading practitioners collaborating on Rehab and Exercise prescription, and delivers workshops to Physiotherapists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Exercise Physiologists, Pilates instructors and Personal Trainers around the world. He has worked with elite and professional athletes in all sports, including Tennis, Golf, Rugby, Australian Football League, Swimming and Athletics.
