Updated product packaging for the leading PPG brand now gives a completely refreshed look that includes a redesigned paint system logo and new colorful label designs for its waterborne toners and its integrated waterborne undercoats and clearcoats. Brown Brothers was founded by two brothers Ernest & Albert Brown who were later joined by their other two brothers John & Frederic Brown. Brown Brothers began trading from No 7. Great Eastern Street, London selling cycle spares, lamps and other such components to the bicycle trade

1892

Brown Brothers opened their first distribution branch in Paris carrying stock of £20,000 occupying 10,000 square feet

1897

Brown Brothers went public by offering shares of £250,000 in their business thus turning them into a limited liability company. The application for shares was over subscribed by over 3 times

1898

The home of Brown Brothers Motor Departartment was opened at No. 22 Great Eastern Street, London. Shortly after a motor car & motorcycle show room was opened and this became a vocal point for many traders.

1908

The beginning of Brown Brothers (Aircraft) Ltd was underway as Brown Brothers purchased an engineering company called B.R. Banks of Dalston. A proud part in Brown Brothers history is that every single British built aircraft that had ever flown up to the end of the Second World War, did so with parts made by Brown Brothers

1911

A diversification came when Brown Brothers established a separate side lines department to deal in what was to become a huge variety of extra lines. These lines included airguns to footballs, from waterproofs to leggings and even baby carriages

1919

Brown Brothers Ltd expanded its operations by merging with James Thomson & Sons (Motor Manufacturers) Ltd

1902

Brown Brothers Deansgate depot in Manchester was opened to serve the increasing business generated in the north of England and Scotland.

1901

Four ‘Brown’ branded cars where published in the Brown Brothers annual catalogue along with the first Brown Brothers produced motorcycle

1944

July 24th, 6.20pm Brown Brothers main warehouse in Great Eastern Street receives a direct hit from a flying bomb. Five other branches also were affected. The value of material and stock destroyed was over £300,000

1975-77

Brown Brothers moved its headquarters in Harlow and then to Swindon

1981

Dana Corporate purchased all of the Brown Brothers shares not already owned by them and the Brown Brothers corporation ceased to exist. The vital decision was made to discard all other operations and concentrate solely on serving the automotive industry

1937

Brown Brothers gained sole distribution rights for refinish paints and ancillary products for Nobel Chemical Finishes Ltd – more commonly known as ICI

1930

Unfortunately old age and deteriorating health caught up with the Brown Brothers, leaving no option for J.Albert Thompson to take over as chairman

2008 - BROWN BROTHERS BECOMES PART OF THE PPG

Brown Brothers becomes part of PPG Industries, the world’s leading supplier of automotive paints across the globe. The business undergoes a significant transformation and several improvement initiatives were introduced to refine the network

2012 -13 BROWN BROTHERS REVAMP

Unipart acquired the Partco Group which included the Brown Brothers brand

1982 - 97

1982 - Bodyline, Brown Brothers own brand ancillary range was introduced1986 - A £12 million investment was made into Brown Brothers own distribution centre in Milton Keynes1997 - Partco Group, the UK’s largest independent distributor of car and lorry parts bought Dana Distribution Europe (who were trading in the UK as Brown Brothers). This made them the market leader in the sale and distribution to the automotive industry.
