July 12, 2020 - 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word but then the cares of the world and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.”

Matthew 13:22

Does the lure of riches and material goods choke God out of your life? Are you so caught up in worldly activities that you have no time for God? Stewardship is a lifestyle to be lived every day. It effects all the decisions we make. What we receive at Mass every Sunday should be shared with others all the other days of the week.

SPIRITUAL RENEWAL/EVANGELIZATION

To Evangelize is to live out our Baptism Call!. Jesus is present with us in Scripture, the Eucharist and in strangers who share our journey. To Evangelize: “The Eucharist is the mystery of presence, the perfect fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to remain with us until the end of the world.”

Pope Saint John Paul II

My Friends, When Jesus answers the apostles' question about why He speaks in parables, it may seem as if He is using them to confuse people. We know Jesus is trying to spread the good news of God's kingdom. So He talks to the crowds in parables, easily understood stories that usually have a moral or that end with a question for the hearers. He uses these stories to teach the crowd. Jesus threw out parables like a farmer sowing seeds. Some of them fell on the ears of those who would be disciples. But most fell on the ears of people not ready to understand. So how do we receive his word? Do we hear it without understanding, letting it go in one ear and out the other? Do we hear it joyfully, but then forget it when troubles or difficulties come along? Do we listen to the word but ignore it in the face of temptation? If we want the word to grow strong in us, we can take steps to help ourselves understand it. We can come to church early and spend a few minutes with the readings before Mass. After Mass we can talk about the readings or the homily with our family over breakfast. We can pick out one practical point to practice that week. Keeping the word in difficult times is not easy. The cross teaches us to expect troubles. We have to endure them to learn that we can go through suffering to a new life. To be strong enough to resist temptations, we have to decide each day that we want to follow Jesus' word. We can pray for that strength and ask God to help us remember that word when temptations come. And we can decide to stay away from the places, people, or situations that so tempt us. God's word can be likened to a ball game. We can sit back and watch, not really caring who wins. Or we can jump in and participate and make the game ours. Let us ask God how we can take the word and run with it.

Loving you always, Fr. Peter

THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Matthew 13:1-23 – 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time About the Gospel: Jesus told stories to help people understand

the Kingdom of God. Today's parable about the sower and the seed shows the challenges of hearing God's word and letting it bear fruit. The seed is the word of God. The challenge for the listener is to be like good soil and allow the word of God to take root. Today's parable makes clear our call to hear the word of God and live it. Gospel Question of the Week: What are some things that we can do so that we are like the good soil, able to hear and accept God's Word about the kingdom of heaven? Question of the Week: What are you doing to help the seeds of your faith grow each day? Family Prayer: Dear God, guide us as we try to follow you, so that we may grow in faith and love, and share that love with all people throughout the world. Amen.

Music Notes

Welcome home to Our Lady of Mt. Virgin church! It's so good to see you all after such a

prolonged absence. I know many of you are wondering what Coronavirus means for our music ministry. Just like we're taking safety precautions like wearing masks, and maintaining distance, our music ministry needs to take some safety precautions as well. Group singing is one of the activities that poses a threat of spreading Coronavirus, both by airborne droplets of saliva, and by aerosols. Since it's not safe for large groups to sing together yet, our choir can't yet meet in person. And, we will continue to meet digitally each week and record a new anthem for you that will be posted on the church's website and social media. You might notice that our Offertory hymn is now instrumental - that is to reduce the amount of congregational singing during Mass. While it's not clear the precise level of risk associated with congregational singing, here's a general guideline: SAFEST - Not singing, and wearing a mask over mouth and nose PROBABLY SAFE - Humming, whispering the words, or singing gently while wearing mask over mouth and nose. UNSAFE - Singing loudly may be more dangerous than coughing or sneezing, and should be avoided. PROHIBITED - Singing without a mask. We are currently allowing two musicians at a time up in the loft - one to play the organ, and one to sing. The loft is more than twenty feet from the congregation, and large enough so that we can maintain twenty feet from each other, so you'll be seeing me and Ruth Ann, but also, some of our choir members who have expressed interest in cantoring, so they can still sing and praise with you during Mass. You may have noticed our beautiful new organ console at the front of the church! It was our hope that being able to play and sing from the front of the church would inspire more of our congregation to sing along with us - unfortunately, this was before COVID-19 hit. In August, we are going to reevaluate all of our music ministry safety protocols, and hopefully we'll be playing and singing from the front at the 11:30 Mass, and it will be safe for you to join in with us and raise your voices loud and proud. It is a privilege to be serving you through this unprecedented and difficult time. I am determined to continue finding ways to support you and your worship with music while maintaining the safety of our congregants and all our music ministers. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. "When you sing, you pray twice" - We are singing for you all. Heal Me

My God and Father, healer of the sick, I turn to You in my time of need. Hear my prayer.

O God, grant me the courage to bear my pain, and the confidence to hope that I shall be well

for I rely on Your love.

Bless the efforts of my Doctors and Nurses. Endow then with your wisdom to heal.

Bless the efforts of all who seek to restore me to health. May it be Your will to restore me to health, that I may

ACCOUNTABILITY WITH HEARTFELT THANKS

Catholic Charities received a payment of $778 as a result of your donations from

December 1st, 2019 to May 31st, 2020. The coronavirus fostered a shortage of food, as well as a surge in unemployment, which resulted in an increase of families who have

never sought relief at our food pantries. Catholic Charities responded to this unprecedented demand by distributing 95,864 pounds of food to 15,976 people (Jan - May). Thank you for being our partner and enabling us to share Christ’s love

while facing the challenges of COVID-19. God bless and stay safe.
