Each new year brings familiar phras-es: Let’s turn a new page, goodbye 2013 and hello 2014, 2013 is gone (and good riddance), Happy New Year, Celebrate, let’s party like it’s 1999 ( recalling the old Prince song), and so forth. The old is set down, the new is put, let’s celebrate! Does that remind you of the sacra-ment of baptism? Of new beginnings and new life?

The similarities didn’t escape John Wesley, who felt it important to end the year with a Covenant Service that recalls our Baptismal Covenant. This was a way to “lean into” God’s contin-uing work. More than $2,000 was received during our Christmas Eve services (a record offering) to benefit Mom’s House of Lancaster: Now, how can we minister alongside them? Our middle

school and high school student min-istry is working hard to fundraise and prepare for a summer work mission trip. Keep an eye out for ways to sup-port them. Our sanctuary audio and visuals are going to improve this year. We’ll build upon previous work with small group ministries. And so, God’s call upon the people of Boehms continues into a new year. Does this old prayer have a place in it?

From the Pastor…

‘I am no longer my own but yours.Put me to what you will, rank me with whom you will;put me to doing, put me to suffering;let me be employed for you,or laid aside for you, exalted for you,or brought low for you;let me be full, let me be empty, let me have all things, let me have nothing:I freely and wholeheartedly yield all thingsto your pleasure and disposal. And now, glorious and blessed God,Father, Son and Holy Spirit, you are mine and I am yours. So be it.And the covenant now made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven.’

Wesley’s Covenant Prayer

There is no greater fulfillment than to watch the power of God working though you… helping a hurting person in poverty with a simple act of service… serving a meal, painting a wall, repairing a roof, caulking a window…. It is through those simple acts of kindness that the seemingly immutable barrier of poverty can be changed… a weight lifted… a glimmer of hope sustained…. a cleared vision no longer fogged by the travesty of a mere exis-tence… the consolation of friend-ship….the solace that I am no longer helpless and alone. When I think about how much it cost Jesus to do those very things for me, I am brought to my knees. What have I ever really done for him? Think about it. In the great court room of heaven, I am found guilty of violating the Ten Command-ments, the statues of the Law. The penalty of violating God’s law is death. Jesus, my council, my Great High Priest stands in the gap between me and the Judge of the Universe and declares that he will take my sentence, my death penalty upon himself! He died for me! My death sentence is now paid in full! I am free, guiltless to stand before the throne of God! For Jesus dedicated his life, and his death to mending my world of brokenness. What more can I do in response to such an act of love? Go and share it with others through my

life long service to others and bring glory to Christ! Won’t you do the same? If you are interested in making a difference that will last for eter-nity, would you consider joining, or supporting our work-related Youth Mission Trip to Cairo, New York? The mission consisting of Boehm’s UMC and West Willow UMC will minister to the needs of those in poverty in that commu-nity through a REACH work camp with the goal to open the door of opportunity to share in service. At each work camp we will read scripture, pray and talk about a personal relationship with Christ and His call on our lives to reach out to people in need. It will inevitably develop a deeper personal relationship with Jesus Christ in each team member. The trip is open to Youth en-tering grades 7 through college students. Adults 21 and older are also welcome to join the trip as we need one adult for each 4 youth and at least one adult of each gender. Sponsorship: Fundraising will be done to cover cost for all. Stu-dents must attend 3 out of the 5 fundraisers or at least participate in 3 out of the 5 in some form or another. If the student does not participate in at least three, then a donation (suggested amount of $50 or more per missing fund-raiser) will be expected to help support the team.

______________________________________________________C O N N E C T I O N January Breadbox “He was a good man...became a Christian when he was 17...entered the ministry to serve Christ with great love and devotion...acknowledged a difficult truth about himself...his love for Jesus was deep but not dependable. At times his passion for God waned. Sometimes he felt nothing at all for His Lord, a man so unworthy, so unfaithful, yet always forgiven...wandered farther...attitudes began to darken...How could he ever look into the eyes of Jesus again?...a miserable man consumed by the grief of his own guilt. With a restless heart of Jonah, the Prodigal Son, and every guilt-ridden soul, he took to the road. Perhaps he could somehow leave his self-condemnation behind. One day a young lady seated across from him in a stagecoach filled with the joy of Christ said ‘Sir, I would like your opinion on one of these hymns--one that has been such a powerful influence in my life.’ Robinson looked at the page. His throat ran dry. Great tears slid down his face. She was looking into the countenance of a tortured soul. Robinson said, ‘I am the man who wrote that hymn many years ago. I’d give anything to experience that joy again. Anything.’ She began to speak gently about the ‘streams of mercy, never ceasing’. There were no seasons too lengthy, no distance too great, for the love of God to find him, comfort him and bring him home again. That day Robert Robinson (author of COME THOU FOUNT), broken and defeated, rediscovered the love he had left behind, that first love, everything. “My prayer that wherever I go and whatever I do, I will never leave my first love. My first priority is to hold on for dear life to my intimate, personal relationship with Him. Simply serving God was not enough. I longed to possess a heart overflowing with love and praise for my Lord. If I failed to main-tain my first love, my disobedience would under-mine all I hold dear...I would disintegrate as a believ-er, a husband, a father, a person, a businessman. The price: daily submission...begin each morning and end each evening on our knees in prayer.”

Exerpts from Chapter 1 Wandering, Not Lost of FIRST LOVE by Bill Bright.

______________________________________________________C O N N E C T I O N Bishop Peggy Johnson is pleased to announce the following appointments of District Supervisors, effective July 1, 2014:

Rev. BumKoo Chung, DS to the Southwest District (including Boehms UMC); Rev. Dawn Taylor-Storm, DS to the Southeast District;

Rev. Tracy Bass, DS to the East District. Their biographies follow, below.

The Rev. BumKoo Chung Rev. Chung was born in Seoul, Korea. His father worked as a minister in the Korean Methodist Church. As a pastor’s kid, church life was very important, and it shaped and influenced his life in many ways. In 1984, his father moved the family to Argentina to do missionary work among Korean immigrants there. At that time, Argentina was an unknown country in Korea.

He attended ISEDET (Instituto Superior Evangelico de Estudios Teologicos), a theological seminary in Argentina. Upon graduation from ISEDET, he came to the U.S to continue his theological studies and received his M.Div. degree from Drew University in 2004. While studying at Drew University, he met Eun Kyung (Debra) and they married in December of 2002. Debra works as a scientist at CD Diagnostics, Inc. They are blessed to one child, a daughter Kayla Yeaji. Rev. Chung has had the opportunity to serve as a pastor at The Greater Pittsburgh Korean United Methodist Church, which is a mission church in The Northeastern Jurisdiction Korean Mission. Even though this church was started as a Korean UMC, it welcomed members from many ethnicities which offered a great multi-ethnic experience in which to serve. Rev. Chung currently serves West Grove UMC, and has previously served Cochranville UMC in Cochranville, PA and Cherry Lane UMC in Tannersville, PA. Rev Chung serves on various boards and agencies in the Annual Conference including the Board of Ordained Ministry, Conference Relations Committee, Pastoral Care Team, Southeast District Committee on the District Superintendency, the ICARE Team, and Congo Partnership. In the past, he also served as a member and chair of Eastern PA Racial Ethnic Ministry Work Team. Beyond the annual conference, he has served as Vice-President of the National Association of Korean American United Methodist Pastors Serving Cross-Racial/Cultural Appointment (July, 2011 – April 2013) and now serves as the Executive Director of The Korean Church Council in the Northeast Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church.

After several years of dedicated service, Rev. Jim Todd’s time as our District Super-intendent will be completed in June. Our new DS will be the Rev. BumKoo Chung

The Rev. Dawn Taylor-Storm A lifelong United Methodist, Rev. Dawn Taylor-Storm spent her early formative years attending Mountainhome UMC . As a youth, Dawn served as President of Youth Annual Conference for the Eastern PA Conference. At one point after a youth rally, The Rev. Steward Warner asked Dawn to prayerfully consider the ministry. Her response was: “Stew, if God calls, God will get my answering machine.” In high school, Dawn served on the Appalachian Development

Taskforce for the denomination. Preparing for a career as a forensic psychologist, Dawn attended Elmira College with a double major in criminal justice and psychology. While at college, Dawn’s internship with Elmira Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison, first revealed to Dawn the need for advocacy and reform within our criminal justice system. Rev. Taylor-Storm’s passion for prison ministry and restorative justice has continued to be a focus of her ministry.

In 1994, Dawn interned with the General Board of Global Ministries as a Mission Intern, serving in San Marcos, Texas. During this time of service, Dawn felt God calling her into the ministry. After months of fasting, prayer and discernment, Dawn enrolled in the Master of Divinity program at Yale Divinity School and completed her coursework in 2001. While at Yale, Dawn served as a Seminary Intern at First and Summerfield UMC in downtown New Haven. Dawn was actively involved with advocacy work for hotel employees in New Haven. She also directed the Pan-Methodist conference at Yale providing a table for dialogue between the UMC, CME, AME and AME Zion Church . Dawn completed her clinical pastoral education at Yale University Hospital, where she provided chaplaincy care to heart transplant patients. In 2001, after being commission for ministry, Rev. Taylor-Storm was appointed to White Haven United Methodist Church. Rev. Taylor-Storm was ordained an elder in 2004 and was appointed to St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church of Valley Forge in 2008 where she has served until the present. Rev. Taylor-Storm has a passion for the local church and has devoted her life to making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Beyond the local church, Rev. Taylor-Storm currently serves on the Northeast Jurisdiction Vision Table, as the Conference Relations Chairperson for the Board of Ordained Ministry, and as the co-chairperson for Women in Professional Ministry for Eastern PA. Rev. Taylor-Storm chaired the camping board from 2006-2009 and enjoys directing a week of camp each summer. Rev. Taylor-Storm served as a delegate to General Conference in 2000 and 2012.

Rev. Taylor-Storm is married to Daniel Taylor-Storm who teaches 11th grade English at Upper Merion High School. They have two children, Lucas and Rebecca. Together, their family enjoys hiking Valley Forge Park, bike riding, and intense games of Qwirkle (if you haven’t played it, Dawn recommends it).

Rev. Taylor-Storm comes to the superintendency as a servant leader, ready to partner with laity and clergy as together we seek to live out Jesus’ call to go into the world and make disciples of all nations.
