Boght Hills Colt News February, 2016 Dear Families; February is here and the month will be flying by with a multitude of activities. We’re looking forward to the fourth annual Science Fair. Join us at 6:30 on February 9 and 11 as students present their research findings. Mrs. Goel-Gupta and a very distinguished panel of judges deserve our gratitude for continuing this excellent learning opportunity for our students. The mid-winter school vacation, February 15-19, will offer you another exciting opportunity for fun activities with family and friends. We wish you safety in your travels. The Elementary All-District Concert for select band, orchestra, and choral students will be held on February 26 in the Shaker High School auditorium at 7:30 pm. Boght Hills is proud to have quite a few representatives. We are grateful to the mu- sic educators for bringing out the talents of our students and the classroom teachers who re-arrange instructional time to accommodate additional practice time that is required. February 26 is movie night in our cafeteria at 6:30 pm. This event is free and concessions will be available for purchase. All children must be accompanied by an adult family member at all times. In an effort to reduce the use of paper, thereby saving valuable resources and taxpayer dollars, very few notices are sent home in print. If you are not yet signed up for the School News Notifier to receive emails and texts, go to the district website, look for the SNN icon, com- plete the user profile and select the buildings about which you’d like to receive information. Don’t miss out on important school news! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge all of the staff members who consistently come in early, stay after school and give up their lunch time to work with our students. We are also fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers who certainly have a positive im- pact on the programs we provide. We appreciate the many parents and family members who routinely volunteer in classrooms, the comput- er lab, library, and various other places in the school. A special thank you to those who volunteer their time to participate on district and building committees, the Board of Education, and various PTA activities. The dedicated staff and volunteers make activities such as the Math League, K-Kids, Library Helper Club, Pokemon Club, Minecraft Club, Lego League, Chess Club, Science Fair, Walk4FUNds, BH post office, intramurals, student banking, after -school enrichment courses, scouting, 6th grade show, and the Student Activity Club all possible. We’d like to thank former Boght Hills parent, Mr. Christian King, who continues to support our school through a grant from his company, Red-Kap Sales, Inc. This funding enables us to participate in activities otherwise not possible. Once again, my sincere thanks to all who volunteer! You are valued for the time, talents, and care you give to our students and their families. In an effort to tighten our security measures and be respectful of the time our teachers are working with children, please schedule a meeting with them, as they are not able to meet without a prior appointment. Please sign in and advise the office staff of your appointment. They will call into the classroom to announce your arrival. Please don’t assume that because you’re in the building already that teachers can sus- pend instruction to speak to you. We ask that you not walk your child to the classroom to relieve congestion, tighten security, and build independence. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Please be respectful of our renewed security measures and only go to the location for which you’ve signed in. Also with regards to safety and security, students must not be dropped off at school before 8:00 without prior arrangements for him/her to work directly with a teacher. Please call the Colonie Youth Center at 438-9596 to make arrangements for before-school care. With Valentine parties coming up, it is imperative that great care be taken to insure foods are safe for the classrooms. Please stick to fruits and vegetables. The students enjoy the crafts and games just as much. Please note an important change within the district calendar. The Parents of Incoming Kindergarteners informational meeting has been moved from February 8 to April 5. It will be held at 7:00 pm in the Shaker High School auditorium. Do you have a 6th Grade student? If you would like news or information about expectations and opportunities at Shaker Junior High School, check out their web page at www.northcolonie.org and click on the junior high. As you know, the district is facing some difficult financial times. The Board of Education welcomes your attendance at the budget planning meetings listed on the district website. Learning about the process will help you make an informed decision in May. We are looking forward to a fabulous 6th grade production of “Peter Pan” on February 4 and 5. Many thanks to Mrs. Holmes, Mrs. Justesen, students, and a host of family and staff volunteers who have taken on this huge undertaking ! Break a leg 6th grade!! Sincerely, Mrs. Greiner 1

~ 9Jps for (parents from tlie Scfwo Jfeaftli Office

Many parents ask When is my child sick enough to stay home from school

This is not always an easy question to answer We hope that these tips can help

A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff We suggest making a plan for childcare ahead of time so you will not be caught without a comforting place for your child to stay if heshe is ill

Our school policy states that you should not send your child to school if heshe has a Fever in the past 24 hours bull Vomiting in the past 24 hours bull Diarrhea in the past 24 hours bull Chills bull Sore throat bull Strep Throat (must have been taking an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning to

school) Bad cold with a very run-1y nose or bad cough especially if it has kept the child awake at

night bull Head lice - until your child has been treated according to the nurse or doctors

instructions

If your child becomes ill at school and the teacher or school nurse feel the child is too sick to benefit from school or is contagious to other children you will be called to come and take himher home from school It is essential that your childs teacher have a phone number where you can be contacted during the day and an emergency number in the event you cannot be reached Please be sure that arrangements can be made to transport your child home from school and that childcare is available in case of illness If your daytime or emergency phone number changes during the year please notify your childs teacher immediately

In this cold weather what could be better than curling up with a great book from the Boght Hills Library Students have

15 minutes during their library time to browse for those just right books Many new books are currently arriving at the

library

In January students in second grade completed research about rivers using the PebbleGo database We enjoyed several fiction books by authorillustrator Thomas Locker and then completed some basic research so that we could have a class discussion comparing what we learned about rivers to what we read in the books Students did a wonderful job collecting facts We reached the conclusion that although the books are realistic fiction the author must have done some research to write about rivers as he did In February we will continue research Students will listen to several nonfiction books by authorillustrator Steve Jenkins and then choose a topic to research Students will work with Mrs Duffy in art to create an illustration to go with their research

Third grade students just completed research using the Power Knowledge database They shared information with each other in small groups I also asked students to take some time to reflect on their research to think about what they did well and to think about something that they might want to do differently the next time There were some great discussions among the students as well as some great thinking about the research process In February third grade students will learn how to use the library catalog to search for library books during their book exchange time

Fourth graders are at the beginning of an in-depth exploration of historical fiction In January I read and discussed examples of historical fiction Now each student will select and read a historical fiction picture book and identify the elements of the story Students will create a class map of the locations where their books took place and construct a timeline that places the time periodstopics of their books in chronological order They will also write questions about the time period of their story and use a variety of library resources to help them answer these questions Students will share their information with the class

Fifth grade students have started a study of fairy tales that take place in different countries Students are working in teams to read and analyze many versions of Cinderella In addition to the sharing of literature students will use databases and other library sources to determine how the culture traditions government etc of the country are depicted in the version of the story that they read

In sixth grade students are currently learning a way to evaluate internet websites to be certain that the website is okay to use for research They are in the process of applying the criteria to a few websites in the same way that they should with any website they may want to use Ask your 6th grader about RADCAB

Please call the schools Health Office if you have any questions or concerns

In this cold weather what could be better than curling up with a great book from the Boght Hills Library Students have

15 minutes during their library time to browse for those just right books Many new books are currently arriving at the

library

Students in kindergarten are enjoying many wonderful books by author and illustrator Mo Willems including books from the Elephant and Piggie Pigeon and Knuffle Bunny series In February students in kindergarten will listen to readalouds connected to themes connected to their work in the classroom such as bears groundhogs space Valentines Day and presidents

First grade students recently enjoyed tales about Anansi the trickster spider as we read and discussed a selection of these stories retold by Eric Kimmel and illustrated by Janet Stevens In February students will enjoy reading Epossumondas stories by Janet Stevens First graders will also use the laptops in the library to explore PebbleGo one of the library databases

We are so fortunate to have author Jarrett Krosoczka scheduled to visit us in June Watch for more details about this wonderful event
