Did you know that the first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 to celebrate Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage on the 12th of October? The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities, which were held over five days on the fields in front of the city gates. 40 000 people were in attendance. 2. In the beginning, beer was not available at Oktoberfest. Alcohol could only be purchased and enjoyed outside the venue. 3. Oktoberfest has been cancelled 24 times because of disease and war. In 1854 and 1873, cholera epidemics forced the fest’s postponement. It was also cancelled during the Franco-Prussian War, WWI and WWII. 4. Did you know that Albert Einstein worked at the festival? He was employed as a trainee in his uncle’s electrical company, and the then-owners of the Schottenhamel tent decided that they wanted to be the first to take advantage of electric lighting, which is why Einstein was employed to screw in light bulbs. 5. Despite its name, Oktoberfest actually starts in the third week of September and lasts until the first Sunday in October. #Septemberfest 6. Only six breweries that brew within the Munich city limits are allowed to participate in Oktoberfest: Hofbräuhaus München, Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu, Paulaner Bräu, Löwenbräu, Hacker-Pschorr-Bräu and Augustiner Bräu. 7. The mugs themselves are hot items at Oktoberfest. Security guards annually recover approximately 150 000 from would-be souvenir hunters. Many are not recovered: The Hofbräu tent alone averages 35 000 missing each year. The fine for stealing a souvenir mug is R600. 8. Glass steins were late to the party: It wasn’t until 1892 that beer was served in glass mugs. Traditional beer steins were made of stone and later metal, and while some of those are still used, they are far outnumbered by their modern glass cousins. 9. You can’t start drinking until the mayor says so. Since 1950, the festivities only begin when, at noon, twelve guns sound a salute and the mayor cracks open the first beer barrel, yelling “O’ zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!” in the Bavarian dialect). The mayor then hands the first beer to the Minister-President of the State of Bavaria. 10. In November of 2008, Bavarian waitress Anita Schwartz broke the record for most beer steins carried at once. Schwartz balanced 19 full beer steins—5 in each hand, and 9 positioned on top of these—and walked 40 meters without spilling. 100 000 SEATS IN THE FESTIVAL HALLS AVERAGE STATS FOR OKTOBERFEST 6.2 MILLION VISITORS ABOUT 980 SEATED TOILETS AND MORE THAN 878 METERS OF URINALS 83 telephones for local and international credit cards Chickens: 521 872 Pork sausages: 284 506 Fish: 38 650 kg Pork knuckles: 58 446 Oxen: 104 6 940 600 LITRES OF BEER CONSUMED Sources: http://www.foodrepublic.com, http://nbyc.us/Oktoberfest-Fun-Facts.php, http://www.oktoberfest.net/ Many of us have been celebrating Oktoberfest for as long as we can remember. SPONSORED BY CURE DAY CLINICS

Although not a completely new model, the concept of day surgery clinics to curb rising healthcare costs, is fast gaining momentum in SA. Funders, patients and doctors are now considering day hospitals as the ‘next big thing’ to save costs, improve efficiencies, reduce waiting times and free up beds in acute hospitals for more serious cases. Admitting few emergency cases at day hospitals, ensures that operating schedules are adhered to, and helps patients and family to plan their days.

FACTS ABOUT DAY HOSPITALS:• More than 60% of all surgical procedures can be performed in day hospitals. This is a result of advances

in anaesthesiology, laparoscopic surgery and the requirement for shorter post-operative recovery periods• Day Hospitals are safe and less traumatic surgical environment when compared to acute hospitals• The cost effective advantages associated with day hospitals are accepted and recognised by medical schemes and seen as an important alternative to reduce costs• Specialists enjoy the treatment of patients in day clinics in view of the fast turnaround time and enhanced productivity associated with these facilities

All our day hospitals are fully equipped

for any medical emergency and our staff are trained accordingly. Should an emergency occur and if the patient needs to stay overnight, contingency plans are in place to transfer a patient to an appropriate facility.

Cure Day Clinics St Stephen’s PAARL welcomes all surgical disciplines that are suited to Day Hospitals, including gynaecology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, urology, dermatology, ophthalmology, Ear-Nose-and-Throat Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, dental, gastroenterology and general surgery.

In and around your home

OCTOBER 20144

NEWS / NUUS

In and around the house

1. Blow up balloons to desired size. Keep in mind that the size of your balloon dictates the size of your lanterns balls (it’s also helpful not to blow up the balloons all the way; a bit less air makes for rounder balloons).

2. If you plan to place a lantern light in your finished lanterns, draw a circle on the top of each balloon large enough to accommodate the lighting fixture. If you’re not planning to light the lanterns or you’d prefer to stuff them with a simple strand of twinkle lights, you can skip this step (just make sure you leave enough space while

wrapping to stuff the twinkle lights inside).

3. Lay a plastic drop cloth over your work surface, and set up a place where balloons can be suspended from the air to dry. I draped the plastic drop cloth across the bathroom floor and into the bathtub so I could hang the balls on the shower bar.

4. Mix glue, cornstarch and warm water in a large container until all lumps are gone, then cover each balloon in petroleum jelly (using rubber gloves for this cuts down on the mess).

5. Feed the twine through the glue mixture until it is coated, then start draping it around the balloon.

6. Wrap the ball vertically to a comfortable tightness, then horizontally. Once ball is wrapped to your liking, use a piece of twine to suspend it from the shower bar (or drying space of your choosing).

7. Allow balls to dry for 24 hours. Then, pop the balloons. It’s like magic! Spray the balls with clear, fast-drying spray paint.

8. Once they’re dry, insert the lights, and you’re ready to party like it’s 1999!

YOU’LL NEED:• 1/2 cup flour• 1 tablespoon of sugar• 1 teaspoon of baking powder• 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda• 1/4 teaspoon of salt• 1/2 cup of fat-free plain yogurt• 1-2 tablespoons of milk• 2 tablespoons of melted and cooled

butter• 1 egg, lightly beaten

WHAT TO DO:1. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl and whisk to combine. Add yogurt, butter, and lightly beaten egg to the same bowl. Add enough milk to make batter stir-able, 1-2 tablespoons depending on the thickness of the yogurt.

2. Scoop out a heaping teaspoon of pancake batter.

3. Drop the pancake batter onto the hot griddle. Give the pancake about a minute to set up on the griddle side so the lollipop stick won’t go all the way through, then place the lollipop stick in the batter just shy of the top of the pancake. Press stick down and use your spoon to smooth out the valley in the batter, that way you will have pancakes that look

perfect on both sides!

4. Space the rest of the pancake pops out, so you have room to add the sticks.

5. They cook really quickly since they are so small. About 4-5 minutes on the first side, and around 3 minutes on the second side. Once the edges start to dry out, they are ready to turn.

6. To flip the pancake pops use a small spatula to lift them up a bit, then you can use the lollipop stick to give them a quick turn. The lollipop stick was warm, but it wasn’t too hot to handle. Just be careful not to touch the griddle!

To serve: Pile them up on a platter with fresh blueberries and maple syrup, and enjoy!

Makes about 20 bite size pancakes

Gaming

THE LAST OF US REMASTEREDThe Last of Us is the sort of game that only comes along once or twice a console generation. Its combination of subtle, crushingly-earnest storytelling and gritty action survival gameplay makes it a game you’re not likely to forget--and if there’s just one game you absolutely must play on your PS4, it’s The Last of Us Remastered.

This post-apocalyptic tale tasks Joel, a man hardened by tragedy, with escorting a 14-year-old girl named Ellie clear across what remains of America. Most of the world’s population has been transformed into genuinely terrifying zombie-things, and the pair must sneak, fight, and run their way past the many dangers that populate their journey. The slow-burn action gameplay is often uncomfortably tense, forcing you to think about and adapt to each enemy encounter.

BATTLEFIELD 4No doubt about it, Battlefield 4 on the PS4 is hands-

down one of the best ways to experience this absolutely thrilling multiplayer shooter. The visuals look roughly a billion times cleaner, which has a direct effect on the amount of enjoyment you’ll derive from playing it. Few things are as exhilarating as fighting in massive battles with a total of 64 players, watching soldiers duke it out in the streets while tanks hurl shells at anything that moves. The environmental destruction is more impressive than ever, the battles are tense, and even the single-player campaign has been greatly improved in comparison to the tragedy that was Battlefield 3’s solo offering. If you’re planning on playing Battlefield 4 on consoles, go PS4 or bust.

TOMB RAIDER: DEFINITIVE EDITION

The game takes you through Lara’s first desperate, life-or-death adventure in the early days of her tomb-raiding career. You’ll watch Lara transform from a scared, lost historian to a brutal, do-what-it takes survivor plunging into ancient ruins, crafting makeshift weapons, and scaling impassable cliffs. How do you make a great game even better? Why, give it a complete graphical overhaul, of course. The Definitive Edition does just that, as it offers a revamped, more detailed Lara model, adds new environmental elements to enhance the island’s visual storytelling, and vastly improves the lighting effects to the point you see every raindrop in the sky light up from a flash of lightning.

ASSASSIN’S CREED 4: BLACK FLAG

We weren’t too sure what to think when we heard that the Assassin’s Creed franchise would be heading to the high seas in a pirate-filled adventure. What we definitely didn’t expect, though, was for our Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag review to call it the best AC yet. Seriously, it’s that good. The land combat is as strong as ever, and features some of the most interesting outdoor locations we’ve explored in the series--but it’s really the open ocean where AC4 is at its best.

FINAL FANTASY 14: A REALM REBORN

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn captures a lot of what we love about the franchise: It’s got a great story, deep RPG combat and progression. And, despite it being an MMO, which are typically overly complex, it’s a game that plays quite well with a controller. Sure, it’ll take some getting used to, and yes, FF14: ARR is a bit overwhelming at first. But onceyou do, and once you get acclimated to the controls, you’ll be partying up with others to take down towering raid bosses (Titan, anyone?) in no time. Do be warned, however: because of the constantly-evolving nature of this MMO, you will have to pony up a monthly subscription fee to play it. Worth it? You bet.

Greatness awaits - TOP 5 PS4 gamesThe PS4 is one heck of a system, that much is certain. But, seeing as we haven’t even reached the end of its launch window just yet, it’s still a tad light on games. If you’re still debating whether to get a PS4 or Xbox One, this list will make your choice much easier (maybe). Don’t fret, dear reader: our pro’s have played just about everything that’s available for the console, and have painstakingly ranked the best of the best so that there’s no question as to which games deserve your hard-earned pocket money and limited time. - www.gamesradar.com
