Abbott, Joan, Noah & Jacob Wallis

Since 1976, Bold Earth has welcomed over 13,000 students from 50 U.S. states

and 50+ countries on adventure programs all over the world! Our mission is

for each participant to enjoy a safe summer of enthusiasm, leadership, respect,

playfulness, trust, responsibility and accomplishment.Bold Earth’s guardianship role is a privilege we take to heart. Our small and

carefully led programs deliver a transformative summer of education, personal

growth and an expanded appreciation of home. As founder and owner of Bold

Earth my goal for every teenager is to experience elevated confidence and a

growing knowledge of their healthy place in our world.Spending a summer away from home and school offers students an incredible

opportunity to gain independence while learning new skills and exploring the

world outside their routine. To ensure a positive and cohesive group, Bold Earth

campers are individually interviewed and two references are required. Bold

Earth is NOT designed to correct behavior but to be a haven of fun, adventure,

respect, trust and responsibility. At Bold Earth, our passion for teen travel should be obvious at every step of your

journey. Our intention is to exceed the expectations of each family, one at a time.

Bold Earth is a global community of over 100 inspirational trip leaders, working

24/7 to deliver your BEST SUMMER EVER! I welcome your calls and emails, and

make a point to be available to develop personal relationships with families that

choose Bold Earth.

We look forward to sharing this summer with you.

Sincerely, Abbott Wallis and the Bold Earth Team

W h I T E W A T E R K A Y A K : Learn on Colorado’s Best River

We begin our 5 days of kayak instruction in a lake and heated pool where we learn to wet exit, roll and paddle. We continue on to

the Arkansas River, where professional guides teach us to ferry, read rapids and surf waves! We spend the next three days camping

alongside the river and running rapids like “Tin Can”, “Pinball” and “Oil Derrick.” The scenery is awesome and the challenge great

as we use our newfound skills to brave the swirling eddies and exhilarating rapids of this world-renowned river.

R O C K C L I M B I N G : For Beginners and Experts

Central Colorado’s Sawatch Range is home to world-famous rock climbing and the perfect setting for our three-day climbing

school. Professional instructors outfit the group with harnesses, helmets and climbing shoes. Guides create a safe and challenging

environment, and give campers one-on-one attention while teaching us the essentials of belaying, rappelling, sport-climbing and

on-rock technique. After full days on the rocks, we relax at the scenic Mt. Princeton Hot Springs.

h I K E A 1 4 , 0 0 0 F T . M O U N T A I N : And Help Build a Trail

Our Rocky Mountain adventure culminates 14,000 feet above sea level as we complete a Colorado rite of passage: climbing one

of the state’s legendary “Fourteeners.” Mount Quandary, which looms high above the ski town of Breckenridge, is the site of

our summit hike, as well as the next day’s service project. Working with Colorado Fourteneers Initiative, we grab hard hats and

pickaxes to reinforce trails on some of the most heavily-impacted sections of the mountain. After giving back, we head back to

Denver to celebrate an amazing two weeks!

ULTIMATE hAWAIIL E A R N T O S U R F : A Classic Hawaiian Sport

Our adventure begins with surfing on the legendary Kona Coast, as we learn

from professional guides who take us to beaches perfect for beginners and more

experienced surfers. After mastering Hawaii’s favorite pastime, we snorkel beside

giant sea turtles, vibrant coral reefs and exotic marine life. Topping it all, native

Hawaiians teach us the ancient island sport of outrigger canoeing aboard authentic

Polynesian sailboats!

W A I M A N U V A L L E Y B A C K P A C K : A Cultural Exchange

We head into the tropical valleys of Northwest Hawaii for the backpacking and

cultural exchange section of trip. In the historic Waipio Valley, we have a homestay

with a native Hawaiian family before loading up our packs for a three-day trek on the

lush Muliwai Trail. Our spectacular hike leads us through lush rain forests to secluded

Waimanu Valley, ripe with mango trees, towering waterfalls, and the island’s longest

black sand beach!

D O L P h I N S & V O L C A N O E S

Our water adventures continue as we harness the winds of the Kohala Coast, sailing

alongside spinner dolphins and stopping at incredible beaches and reefs to snorkel. In

Volcanoes National Park, a night hike leads us to views of lava flowing into the Pacific

Ocean. We then drive to an observatory atop the 13,000- foot Mauna Kea volcano!

From our perch above the clouds, we experience incredible star gazing through some

of the world’s most powerful telescopes.

M A R I N E B I O S E R V I C E P R O J E C T

The Kohala Center is our home for four days of experiential learning and community

service. Working closely with marine biologists, we spend our days in the water,

collecting ocean data and learning hands- on about reef ecology. By day three of

our training, we are licensed reef teachers, certified to educate visitors about human

impact on marine environments across the globe. Our last night brings us to Kona,

where we celebrate the amazing bonds formed on our Big Island adventure!

B A R C E L O N A : A Mediterranean Paradise Our Spanish adventure begins in Barcelona, a cultural paradise located on the beaches of the Mediterranean Sea. We spend two full days visiting

the city’s major sites, including Gaudí’s Park Güell and La Sagrada Familia as well as the stadium of Barcelona FC. For a fresh perspective on this

vibrant metropolis, we kayak in the Mediterranean Sea, visiting hidden beaches and savoring panoramas of the Barcelona skyline, all while

swimming, laughing and enjoying the water!

S P A N I S h L A N G U A G E C L A S S E S

After getting acquainted with Barcelona, we settle into life with our host families. All families have been carefully selected and are connected to

Bold Earth through long-term relationships. Campers stay two-per family in centrally-located houses, all within two blocks of the Spanish school.

Once divided by ability level and experience, students meet with Spanish teachers who encourage conversation and real-life practice. Morning

classes are supplemented with afternoon excursions to the Picasso Museum, Gaudí’s historic homes and to the famous Mercat de Sant Josep

located on Las Ramblas.

P Y R E N E E S M O U N T A I N S : Whitewater Raft, Hike & Volunteer

With a stronger command of our Spanish, we head north into the Pyrenees Mountains to begin three days of outdoor adventure! Near the town

of Sort, we hike amidst alpine valleys and pristine lakes to a mountain cabin where we cook a delicious Spanish feast, enjoy amazing views of the

stars, and sleep in wooden bunk beds. After an afternoon of conservation work at a mountain lake, we spend a full day whitewater rafting the wild

and scenic Noguera River. We dry off and return to Barcelona to spend the last day celebrating an amazing two weeks in Spain with a Paella feast!

whitewater rafting, mountain biking, waterfall hiking and summer luging keep our adrenaline racing throughout the day!

I T A L Y : Rock Climbing & Snow Sports

Explore the beautiful rolling hills of Verona, filled with quaint Italian shops, rich history, and restaurants serving homemade

S P A N I S h C L A S S E S : Homestay, Surfing & Sailing

Pura Vida! We start our three-week adventure with five days of conversational Spanish

language classes. Designed with everyday conversational skills in mind, we partner with

young Costa Rican Spanish teachers to create a fun and engaging classroom experience.

Classes have a maximum of four Bold Earth students per teacher and involve games, field

trips and lots of laughter! After morning classes, we spend the afternoons surfing, hiking,

horseback riding and exploring an active volcano! During this portion of the trip, each

student stays with his or her own friendly host family.

C O M M U N I T Y S E R V I C E : Sea Turtle Protection Project

Our next experience is a volunteer project with the Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation.

Based in a small village, we live with host families in the community and spend two days

building a new playground at the local school. Next, we travel to the Pacific Coast to work

on a project helping endangered sea turtles. Working with the Ostional Wildlife Refuge,

we help sea turtles find safe hatching areas and assist baby sea turtles to safely walk to the

ocean. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

A D V E N T U R E S P O R T S : Zip-Line, Snorkel, Bike, Tube & Sail

With our community service and classroom sections behind us, we spend several days

traveling with one thing in mind . . . adventure! Jungle zip-lines, snorkeling, tubing and

sailing all lead up to our final adventure: rafting Class III rapids alongside monkeys and

toucans on the wild Pacuare River. Our trip concludes at a backpackers lodge near Arenal

Volcano, where we watch the distant flow of red-hot lava from the safety our cabanas in

the jungle.

Our trip starts in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, perched high in the clouds amongst

one of the most amazing wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Keep your eyes open for

hummingbirds, toucans, sloths and monkeys. On our way from the jungle to the beach,

we stop for our community service project with the Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation.

Partnering with local schools, we practice our Spanish while helping to build a new

playground. Arriving on the Pacific Coast, we enjoy surfing, sailing and soaking up the sun

and white sand of our new home: Flamingo Beach!

S P A N I S h I M M E R S I O N : Small Classes & Homestays

Conversational skills and increased confidence are the goals as we attend classes at both

Flamingo Beach and in Monteverde. Forget your typical Spanish class: Small groups

capped at four students work with fun, local instructors to help improve fluency in an

authentic environment. Conversations are enhanced with culture, cooking, field trips and

games. During the night, we stay with local host families to practice Spanish, eat home-

cooked meals and get a firsthand taste of Costa Rican culture. We wrap up our amazing

journey by saying “Pura Vida” to the pristine beaches and our wonderful host families!

G A L A P A G O S I S L A N D S : Adventure, Wildlife & Volunteer

From our bases on San Cristobal, Santa Cruz and Isabella Islands, we spend 10 days exploring the turquoise waters and

abundant wildlife of the Galapagos. Snorkeling, sea kayaking, surfing, biking and community service give us the opportunity

to see the islands from a variety of angles. With plenty of time in the water, we see plenty of sea turtles, manta rays, blue footed

boobies and much more! Taking a brief break from adventure, we spend two days working at a Special Education Center,

helping local school children with special needs. On the third day of community service, we partner with the Charles Darwin

Center to assist in the conservation of Galapagos Tortoises.

W O R K O N O R G A N I C F A R M : Located on the Pacific Coast

In the tropics of Ecuador’s Pacific Coast, we spend five-days volunteering at Río Muchacho, a self- sustaining, zero-waste

organic farm. Community service and environmental awareness is our focus as we learn about compost and crop rotation while

tending to the farm’s horses, chickens, and guinea pigs. Even though the seeds we plant will not mature for months, all the food

eaten on the farm is grown locally. Campers leave inspired by the Farm’s ecologically friendly practices and are ready to start

gardens of their own!

A N D E S M O U N T A I N S : Volunteer in Quito & Indigenous Village

Quito’s bustling markets and colonial architecture are the backdrop for our final three days in Ecuador. We explore the palaces

and plazas of this historic city, and visit the Equator line monument and museum. Our trip concludes as we partner with a local

From the colonial city of Cuzco, we spend three days tracing the footsteps of the Incas through the ancient Sacred Valley. Our pace is moderate

and our gear is transported by porters as we stop frequently at hot springs and local villages. The sense of accomplishment upon arriving at Machu

L A K E T I T I C A C A : Volunteer in Island Villages

High in the Andes, the Uru people have inhabited man-made islands crafted from reeds since the time of the Inca. During our homestay on the

islands, we build chimneys in the village’s thatched-roof huts. Our time on the Uros Islands offers an amazing opportunity for cultural exchange and

community service.

A M A Z O N W I L D L I F E R E F U G E : Volunteer with Animals Surrounded by some of the most pristine primary rain forests in the world, we stay at a remote eco-lodge, above the ground and apart from the

mosquitos and animal life below. From our lodge we explore the jungle by foot and canoe as we fish for piranha and look for monkeys, sloths and

toucans. We spend two days working at a local wildlife refuge, helping to rehabilitate animals to be released into the wild.

domestic tourists. In this picturesque town on the Li River, we enjoy rock climbing, tai

chi, biking, Chinese cooking classes and a community service project. Moving out of the

countryside, our epic adventure concludes in the bustling metropolis of Hong Kong. A

visit to Victoria Peak provides incredible views of Victoria Harbor, and the neon jungle of

Kowloon glows as we celebrate an epic journey with a final Chinese feast.

W I L D L I F E S A F A R I S : Elephant, Lion, Giraffe & More

Epic Africa includes three world-class safaris. We begin in Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s largest game parks and home to countless

rhinos, elephants, zebras, lions and giraffes. Near the quaint town of St. Lucia, we raft, zip-line and participate in service and conservation

projects. In St. Lucia Wetlands Park, we kayak amongst hippos and enjoy a safari in Hluhluwe Game Reserve.

S W A Z I L A N D V o l u n t e e r : A Cultural Community Service Project

In the Lebombo Mountains we discover a genuinely African way of life by volunteering in a small Swazi village. Mornings are devoted to

work as we help at a local school and plant trees. In the evenings, we eat local delicacies and enjoy traditional village dances around the

campfire.

M O Z A M B I Q U E B e a c h e s : Sea Kayak, Snorkel & Surf

On the stunning white sand beaches of the Indian Ocean, we adventure in one of Mozambique’s most picturesque beach towns, Praia do

Tofo. While living in huts on the beach, we spend our days surfing, sea kayaking and swimming with whale sharks. This is the beachside

experience of a lifetime!

S O U T h A F R I C A : orphanage & Volunteer Projects

Our three-week adventure ends with a focus on South African history and culture. In the heart of Zululand we volunteer at a local orphanage,

helping kids to plant a garden. On our final days in Johannesburg, we visit the Apartheid Museum and bike through Soweto Township,

gaining a new perspective of South African history and contemporary culture.

Bold Earth and Safety? Safety is #1. Since 1976, over 13,000 teens have

safely and successfully completed a Bold Earth

program. As with all adventure activities, there

are inherent risks. Bold Earth’s commitment to

safety begins with trip planning and trip leader

training. our trip leaders are trained Wilderness

First Responders, certified Lifeguards, and

experienced outdoor leaders. We work with

professional guides and outfitters to ensure the

maximum amount of supervision and safety.

What are your Safety Standards? We are certified by all relevant state and local

agencies and accredited by the American

Camp Association. We voluntarily meet or

exceeded over 300 safety standards including

leader qualifications, first aid, emergency

procedures and vehicle safety. Bold Earth has

emergency action plans for each specific trip.

Is Bold Earth Fun and Worthwhile? With over 13,000 references from all 50 U.S.

states and 55 countries worldwide, ask our

office for Bold Earth alumni in your area. The

Bold Earth way of life is a perfect balance of

maturity, leadership, and fun. over and over

teenagers tell us that the friendships, activities,

goals and motivations everyone shares on Bold

Earth are incredible. our goal is that after just

a short time with us, your Bold Earth trip will

become the best decision of your life.

Can I Bring my iPod, iPhone and iPad? Bold Earth has an unplugged philosophy.

Therefore we ask that you bring only your cell

phone which your Trip Leaders will keep safe

and dry for the duration of the trip. Please do

not bring your iPad and please have a camera

separate from your cell phone. A call home

once a week is ok, otherwise we discourage

calls to home and especially friends because

they detract from the experience and disrupt

the bonding process.

Parents: How Can I Contact My Child? Bold Earth’s Colorado office is open 24 hours

a day by phone and email during the summer

months and Bold Earth can quickly get in touch

with Trip Leaders and campers anywhere in the

world. All problems are handled immediately

and the family is always contacted directly.

Flying Alone? A successful arrival on Bold Earth begins with

air travel coordination for all students. In order

to have your son or daughter fly with other

Bold Earth campers, we recommend that you

book air travel arrangements using our travel

agent, STA Travel, beginning on March 31st.

our 37 years of experience have shown that

booking three months prior to departure not

only ensures the best price, but also ensures

that campers can fly together. All Bold Earth

campers will be met by their Trip Leaders

immediately upon arrival.

How Does Bold Earth Screen its Campers? Prior to enrollment, Bold Earth requires a

camper and parent telephone interview. In

addition, as part of the trip application, Bold

Earth requires two adult references for each

camper. All references are contacted in order

to ensure only positive and healthy participants

join Bold Earth. Campers requiring excessive

trip leader attention are not accepted, as

well as any camper with problems relating to

tobacco, drugs, or alcohol.

Should I Come Alone? We strongly suggest you come alone, 85%

of our campers do. Bold Earth will not accept

more than three people who know one another

in any group.

What Experience do I Need? No experience is required for participation

on any Bold Earth trip. All you need is a

willingness to try new activities and to make

new friends. Speak with our office to match

your readiness and age with the right program.

We recommend regular aerobic exercise for

at least a few weeks before your trip. Walking,

jogging, swimming or riding a bike are all good

ways to increase your fitness, thus allowing you

to enjoy Bold Earth to its fullest.

What’s NOT Included? Spending Money?

Airfare and personal items listed on the

equipment list are not included. In order to

cover gifts, film, personal items and impulse

purchases, Bold Earth recommends no more

than $75 per week. We recommend you bring

cash, credit card or ATM card. We will assist you

with currency conversion upon arrival.

What is the Refund Policy? Prior to May 15, all tuition, except $400, is

fully refundable. Cancellations must be made

in writing. After May 15, there are no refunds

unless you separately purchase optional Tuition

Insurance from Bold Earth.

Medical and Insurance Coverage? Three types of insurance are available.

1. optional Tuition Insurance (Highly

recommended): Purchased directly from

Bold Earth to guarantee your tuition against

anything not covered by other insurance.

2. International Participant Insurance: Is

purchased for all Bold Earth campers traveling

outside of the United States, as part of tuition,

to guard against major medical injuries and
