Title: The problem with PBL in virtual and online environments: An Arts Faculty perspective
Abstract: This presentation reflects on the implementation of a problem-based learning pedagogy [PBL] into the presenter's current teaching practice. Informed by a range of quantitative and qualitative data samples, the discussion section examines a subject of particular interest to the author1 the persistent dynamic or tension in teaching and learning between the ideal (the theory of the teaching art) and the real (the practice of this art) What interests me most today are the complex consequences or impacts of a problem-based pedagogy on the practice of tertiary teaching and learning, especially within a virtual or blended learning environment [VLE/BLE]:
An increase in the number and complexity of assessment tasks
An increase in the time spent in lectures, tutorials and email communications explaining assessment tasks to students
A decrease in the time available for providing detailed feedback to students on their assessment tasks as a result
The paper offers for discussion the following questions:
1 Does PBL in practice actually support the pedagogical objectives of a student-centred approach to teaching and learning?

2. Is the contemporary university student well prepared enough for the transition to a mainly PBL curriculum?
Is there an inherent tension in contemporary advocacy of PBL in Virtual Learning Environments [VLEs] and or Blended Learning Environments [BLEs]?
Is the contemporary university student increasingly "overwhelmed" by the technological management of his/her tertiary learning experience and possibly, therefore, "underwhelmed" by the content of the tertiary learning experience.
Increasingly, I would argue university teaching and learning is about how students are to learn, not so much about what they are to learn and much less so about a critical interrogation of why they are to learn what. Whilst I am a strong advocate of developing in our students a reflexive, meta-attitude to their learning and teaching processes, too often I suggest, this meta-attitude may be absorbed into the "busy-ness" of simply coping with more complex teaching, learning and assessment processes in VLEs/BLEs

3. BOLT Global Links Speaker Series 2014 – Context
The Bond Office of Learning & Teaching Global Links Speaker Series 2014 has been
introduced as an open forum to encourage dialogues about critical learning and teaching
issues. Guest presenters from within and outside Bond University are invited to make brief
presentations on relevant aspects of learning and teaching (blended learning, assessment,
curriculum design and topics of their choice). Co-facilitated presentations on faculty and
university priority agendas are invited. The focus is on sharing perspectives and approaches
to learning and teaching.
In researching our practice as /learning and teaching professionals we would like to record
presentations and to critically reflect upon these so that we may inform future initiatives,
seek innovation solutions that are context based and to collaborate on exciting learning and
teaching projects across faculties and disciplines by invitation, as needed.
The following guest presenters have agreed to participate in the Global Links Speaker Series
2014.

Title: A match made in heaven: Student mobility, employability and experiential learning
Abstract: A recent study conducted into the relationship between study abroad programs and enhancing students' employability attributes also collected data which suggested these programs heightened students' se/f reflection on their own learning processes. Students developing a meta- attitude to their own learning is seen by progressive pedagogues to be a critical factor in ensuring positive and sustainable learning outcomes This paper reports on the various ways in which students responded to the experiential learning "techniques" applied during their study abroad Findings are also presented that indicate the ways in which this international experience contributes to graduate employability attributes, especially in the areas of self-reflexivity, critical thinking and inter-cultural competence. In the context of student mobility, employability and academic preparation for life 'beyond the academy', the results of the study suggest a "win-win" result. A result, which in the presenter’s opinion should encourage more investment in the emergent synergies at Monash that explore such a unique and productive nexus.

Title: Dilemmas and challenges for Chinese students in a first language classroom: Research findings from New Zealand higher education
Abstract: China is the largest source country of international students for both Australia and New Zealand. Of the 218,000 international students in Australian higher education in 2012 and 55,960 internationals students in New Zealand higher education in 2013, the number of Chinese students accounted for 33.13% and 31%, respectively The presence of Chinese students has contributed to the economies of the two countries billions of dollars and created jobs for thousands of people However, the export education industry is facing serious challenges. This presentation will report some key research findings from New Zealand higher education to highlight some of the dilemmas and challenges for Chinese students, including language issues, academic acculturation, approaches to learning and teaching, safety issues, psycho-social issues and employment. It is important to raise the awareness of Chinese students' learning plights and identify strategies to help them address their concerns and successfully accomplish their studies.
Biographical Data:
Dr Mingsheng Li is a Senior Lecturer at School of Communication, Journalism and Marketing, Massey University, New Zealand. He taught English language and literature at Yunnan University in China for fifteen years He received a doctoral degree from La Trobe University, Australia He has published a number of research articles about Chinese students ‘academic acculturation in New Zealand. His research interests include international education, migrant studies, and intercultural communication.

Title: Transforming assessment with e-assessment for e-exams Abstract: This session will explore options for assessing students undertaking examinations via computerised approaches which are designed to extend what is pedagogically possible over and above that of simple MCQ quiz or paper-based formats. An update will be provided on the currently running OLT project which is developing a scalable approach to e-Exams that utilised BYOD in a secure and extensible manner.
Biographical Data:
Dr Mathew Hillier is currently a Lecturer in Higher Education (e-Learning) at University of Queensland who specialises in e-assessment and e-exams. He is the co-host of the ‘Transforming Assessment’ monthly webinar series on e-assessment and is the project leader of two OLT grants, one on e-assessment professional development and the other on e-exams.

Title: Daedalus as a collaborative sustainable software tool for curriculum design: Encouraging learning and teaching partnerships.
Abstract: This presentation is based on a co-authored paper on and discusses an approach to foster a collaborative environment to capture curriculum data, and reports on the co-evolution of a software tool Daedalus to complete this task. The resulting maps are then used by students and instructors to browse through a curriculum to better grasp the context of each student learning outcome. The authors contend that a simple workflow and minimalistic requirement for data promotes a sense of ownership of the curriculum mapping process and potential for innovative practice and sustainable impact Recommendations are made to implement a curriculum building processes across disciplines as a collaborative process to encourage collegial partnerships

Prof. Christian Blouin is an Associate professor at Dalhousie University in the Faculty of Computer Science and in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular biology. His research interest’s ranges from protein engineering, molecular evolution, geometry, statistics, machine learning, and natural language processing His interests are expanding to the field of educational development in recent years.

Bond Conversations about Learning and Teaching: Exploring the Possibilities
The OLT office hosted the first learning and teaching discussion forum for this year on Wednesday 26th February. Bond Conversations about Learning and Teaching: Exploring the Possibilities
The first Bond Conversations about Learning and Teaching event was successfully launched in February 2014.
It was hosted by the Office of Learning and Teaching (OLT) at Bond University. Twenty participants attended the event and they represented the faculties, ITS, Library, a student association and BUELI.
Their participation in the event brought a rich, deep insight into the challenges and possibilities that faced learners and teachers. Together, participants addressed concerns and raised questions that matter. They focused on exploring strategies that would effectively
• Advance learning and teaching to the next level; • Recognize the uniqueness that lies within and across disciplinary boundaries; and • Embrace a collaborative, collective vision for learning and teaching as an expansive, inclusive, diverse and equitable paradigm.
The Bond Conversations event (referred to as Bond Conversations in this report) was modelled on the principles and guidelines of the Art of Hosting Conversations that Matter and the World Cafe framework.
It was launched as a pilot to demonstrate the World Cafe concept and to provide an open forum for dialogue on learning and teaching at Bond University.
