    2. SCOPE OF DOCUMENT Bolt Length Calculation covers the bolt length for different flange bolting assemblies used in process and utility piping system

    3. BOLT LENGTH CALCULATION:

    3.1 FOR ASME B 16.5 FLANGES

    Bolt length is calculated as per Appendix C ASME B 16.5. Unless other wise noted

    Where tf : Flange thickness (as per ASME B 16.5/16.47/MSS SP 44 tables as applicable) t : Plus tolerance for flange thickness (as per para. 7.4 ASME B16.5 for NPS 18 +3.0 mm and for

    NPS 20 +5.0 mm ) d : Heavy hex nut / Jam nut thickness (as per ASME B18.2.2) G : 3.0-mm (0.12 in.) in case of gasket thickness for raised face, male and female tongue and Groove

    flanges; In case of RTJ approximate distance between ring joint flanges as per Table 5 of ASME B16.5 Table II-5 of Mandatory Appendix II.

    F : Total height of facings or depth of ring joint groove for both flanges (as per ASME B 16.5 Section 6.4 for RF and Table II-5 of Mandatory Appendix II Table C-2 for RTJ)

    a : Zero, except where the small female face is on the end of pipe, a = 5 mm (0.19 in.)

    The length of the stud bolt is calculated by

    3.2 FOR API FLANGES

    4. ADDITIONAL ALLOWANCES: As per ONGC FS 2004A REV (7) Flange bolting of nominal size M40 (1) and above shall be subject to bolt tensioning. Stud bolts shall have full continuous threads and have lengths in accordance with B16.5 with the provision that a minimum of one (1) thread and a maximum of three (3) threads outside each nut and complete with 2 nuts to facilitate bolt tensioning.

    5. THREADING SERIES: For Flange bolting subjected to bolt tensioning, the additional length has been calculated considering the pitch as Unified Coarse Series (UNC) for the respective bolt size and multiplying the no of extra threads as mentioned in ONGC FS 2004A REV (7) with pitch mentioned in Table 1 Standard Series Threads (UN/UNR) of ASME B1.1. For bolt size wherever UNC pitch is not mentioned in table 1, Constant pitch series 8 was chosen as recommended in ASME B1.1.

    6. BOLT LENGTH TABLE The bolt length table has been prepared as indicated in below bolt table matrix. The bolt lengths are calculated and listed based on the study of various flange connection combinations occurring in the project mainly with respect to material, rating, flange assembly and the flange dimension standard.

    7. GENERAL NOTES 1. Base bolt lengths are taken from ASME B 16.5 as applicable. 2. Extra 2 to 3 Thread lengths on both sides after Nut has been considered for all size, Ratings and Flange

    combination. Following allowances are not considered as extra thread lengths add to all stud bolts. a. Positive tolerance in Nuts ( As specified in ASME B 18.2.2 Table 10) b. Positive tolerance in Ring type Gasket (i.e 0.2 mm as specified in ASME B 16.20 Table 3 to 8) c. Positive tolerance in Raised face Gasket (i.e 0.13 mm as specified in ASME B 16.20 Table 9 to 14) d. n: Negative tolerance on bolt length.

    3. All stud bolts shall comply with ASME B 1.1. Nuts shall comply with ASME B18.2.2. 4. For Bolt Dia M40 (1.5) and above 2 tension nuts (From ASME B 18.2.2 Table 10) to facilitate bolt

    tensioning is considered as per ONGC functional specification spec 2004A Rev.7.
