From the newPRINCIPAL

To the Alumni of Bolton High School, let me say hello and express how excited I am to be a part of the Bolton family. Since I took the principal position here at the end of July, and I haven’t had the opportunity to meet you in person, I just wanted to take a few minutes and share some things with you.

I grew up in Delhi, Louisiana, and graduated from Delhi High School in 1974. After high school I worked for Sun Oil Company for twenty years. In 1995, I started college at the University of Louisiana in Monroe, earning a bachelor’s degree in social studies education with a minor in English. I taught one year at Mangham High School and four years at Ouachita Parish High School. In 2003 I earned a master’s degree in education and completed my specialist degree in education in education administration. I have served as served as principal of Rayville Junior High School, assistant principal of Caldwell Parish High School, principal of Holly Ridge Elementary School, and principal/CEO of Delta Charter School of Math, Science, and Technology.

Now I am at Bolton High School, a school rich in educational tradition and known for its high standards of academic excellence. Bolton recently celebrated its centennial, a watermark many schools never achieve! This was made possible because of the loyalty and dedication of many people. Now we embark on the second 100.

As many of you know, having walked the halls of this school, you know any student can receive an excellent education here, which prepares them for life and the challenges it offers. As

Bolton moves forward the challenges it faces become more and more challenging. The world has changed, society has changed, education has changed, and Bolton has changed. It must adjust so that the tradition of meeting the academic needs of the community, parents, and students may continue. This we will do.I have several plans to address the unique situation Bolton is in today. First, we must recognize that the

Bolton High School of 2015 is not the Bolton High School of yesteryears. Time has ushered in many changes. These changes must be identified and dealt with on an individual basis. We have seen an increase over the past years of at-risk students, many not having the basic skills necessary to survive the rigor of a high school setting. Consequently, Bolton has suffered a huge dropout rate.

Meeting the needs of this population and keeping them in school is one of my main priorities. We will seek out and find solutions to these problems. Using Jump Start, a vocational track

for students, we will better serve the needs of these students by preparing them for the

workforce in place of trying to ready them for college. Presently, the vocational tracks Bolton purposes to offer so that students graduating will have industry based credentials and will prepare them to go to work immediately after graduation are business management, emergency medical technician, hospitality/tourism culinary and retail, information technology, technology specialist and work place safety.

Secondly, we will bolster or college readiness programs. Bolton continues to lead the parish in ACT scores, and it is a nationally ranked high school based on its academics. Because of the excellent Advanced Place (AP) program being offered at Bolton offers, the school continues to help students compete successfully in any collegiate environment. In addition to the AP classes, Bolton will continue offering duel enrollment classes through Louisiana State University in Alexandria. Therefore, students who wish to do so could graduate from Bolton having completed most of their freshman year of college providing them with both an economic plus and an academic one.

Although we may have to take drastic actions like expelling students from school, we will be researching and to

find ways to alleviate the need for this. We are presently experimenting with some alternative disciplinary actions such as community service requirements. Although this is in its

infancy, we are excited about the possibilities this program could have. Our goal is to keep kids in class while teaching them self-discipline, self-control, and self-respect, as well as allowing them to give back to the community in which they live.

Our student council now hosts an after school tutoring session each Tuesday for students who are needing help. Faculty members supervise but the students are the ones tutoring. Our Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) has joined in the effort by providing snack. Since we are seeing about thirty (30) students per week, we are seeing positive results. Working together, we have, can, and will make a difference. Larry Bell, an educational motivational speaker once said, “On your worst day, you are some

child’s best hope.” That’s a powerful statement and true. We deal with “wounded” students, daily, both the academically advanced child and the at-risk child. These students bring to

school many issues which adults have problems handling, and yet, as children they are forced to deal with them. Bolton High School gave each of you hope. We will continue to work daily to provide a quality education for children in a safe, clean, student friendly environment.

Change has come to Bolton. We recognize it. We will face it. We will be successful. Yet we recognize success will not come easy, nor do we expect it to come overnight. It will take all of us recognizing the need for change, a willingness to embrace the change, and then the stamina to work to see success. We cannot go it alone; we need your continued help and support.

I look forward to working with the alumni of Bolton High School as we enter our next century. Bolton has always lead the way, and it will continue to carry the torch of quality and tradition.

Hollywoodin the Halls

Class of 1998 Bolton Alumni Shaun Sanghani spent some time shooting his new upcoming film, Class Rank, in the halls of Bolton. The film stars Olivia Holt, Kristin Chenoweth and Skyler Gisondo and is directed by

Eric Stoltz. Sanghani describes the movie as somwhere between John Hughes and Napoleon Dynamite. Some of the students were cast as extras in the film. We can’t wait to see Bolton on the big screen!

Bolton High School has become the Academic high school in Central Louisiana.

In U.S. and News World Report, Bolton was listed as one of the “Best High Schools in America” and was awarded a silver medal,one of only four such schools in Louisiana.
