End of Financial Year - School Payments

It is not long now until our financial year rollover and Mrs Rapson is madly finalising outstanding accounts, orders and payments. If you have overlooked paying accounts (such as text books, “voluntary” school contributions, excursions, choir etc) could you please pay them as soon as possible. Our Annual Financial Statement (AFS) is published each year in the Annual School Report. Thank you. Air Quality Alert for People with Asthma

With 100 fires burning across NSW, a thick cloud of wood smoke present in many areas and hot, windy conditions forecast for the coming days, Asthma Foundation NSW is urging the 1:10 adults and children with asthma to be particularly vigilant. In particular the Foundation is asking schools, sporting and other leisure-time organisations to keep a close watch on those children in their care. “While fire can damage property and threaten life, it can also seriously affect the health of people with medical conditions, especially those who live with asthma. Wood smoke is a prime trigger for what could be a potentially fatal asthma attack", said Michele Goldman, CEO of Asthma Foundation NSW. "We are asking that the responsible adults keep a close eye on all children during this period. Ensuring that children with asthma are carrying their reliever medication at all times is particularly important. If a child shows signs of respiratory distress and their medication is having no affect call Triple Zero (000) immediately.”

If your staff or students are exposed to bushfire smoke, air pollution or pollens, you can reduce the effects on their asthma by:

Unless ordered to evacuate, staying indoors, closing all windows and doors. If you have an air conditioner, switch it to recycle or re-circulate.

Postponing outdoor sporting or exercise activities to when there is a lower risk of bushfire and the Regional Pollution Index (RPI) is medium to low. More activity means deeper breaths, so the particles can be drawn further into the lungs.

If you are in your car, putting the air system onto re-circulate to reduce your exposure to smoke.

Using your asthma action plan if your asthma starts to get worse. If your symptoms aren’t improving with use of your reliever medication, seek medical assistance.

Making sure you and people around you are familiar with Asthma First Aid and having Asthma Emergency Kits easily available in areas such as playgrounds.

Current information on the status of bushfires can be obtained on the Rural Fire Service website or calling 1800 679 737. If you have with questions or concerns around this issue, please call the Asthma Foundation NSW on 1800 ASTHMA (1800 278 462). Our training team is here to help and can offer information about training, asthma policies and first aid equipment. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if we can assist you in any way.

Kind Regards

CLASSROOM CAPERS KE KE have been working hard this week to get ready for the kinder orientation next week. We

are singing a song for the new kinders and we sound great! This week in maths we have been learning about different addition strategies. We learnt a fun song about doubling numbers and will learn some more in the next few days. We have been learning about water in science which has been perfect this week as we have all been drinking lots and some of us have even been swimming in the afternoons!

KT KT have been working really hard again this week. We are beginning some assessments

this week in writing, spelling and sight words. In maths we are learning to read hour time on a digital and analogue clock and practising our friends of 10. Resilience is our focus in PD, where we have been discussing the different feelings we experience. We are looking forward to greeting our new Kinders for 2014 with a special song. Keep working hard KT!

KW We have been very busy this week, continuing with reading and literacy groups. In

mathematics we are practising counting on and back to solve problems and memorising some number combinations to ten and beyond. We are practising a beautiful song to entertain our new enrolments for kindergarten next year and finally we thank the beautiful Miss Hill for teaching KW so wonderfully during semester 2.

1B 1B are busy with assessments. We are enjoying reading and discussing “My Country” by

Dorothea Mackellar. We farewelled the characters from our novel and are now reading “James and the Giant Peach”.

1P It looks like most children in 1P have suffered from the various germs that have been

floating around our class. The majority of children are back on board. We have been working on assessment tasks for writing, reading and maths so it is great when we are all here so no-one has to catch up. Some children have delivered the speech about celebrations and most have been a little nervous (even just in front of our class) but have been able to stand up confidently and tell the information clearly. They are very excited when it is their turn. Thank you for your support at home in helping them to prepare and practise.

1-2M 1-2M have continued our work on Australia Day. We learnt "My Country"

by Dorothea Mackellar which we performed at the K-2 assembly last Friday. After discussing the landscape and physical environment of Australia we then wrote our own descriptive poems. This week we are enjoying listening to each other's speeches on a range of celebrations.

2B 2B should be proud of themselves for keeping routine while Mrs Baxter is away. Their

persuasive writing is really coming along as many convinced me this week of who our next Prime Minister should be. They will be working on time in maths this week. (Mr West)

2HP 2HP have been working very hard, despite the terrible weather conditions. This is an

important time of year, as we are completing assessment tasks. Mrs Henry and I are both pleased to see how far our wonderful students have come since the beginning of the year. This week we have had some great talking and listening tasks presented to the class. In maths we have been revising our knowledge of money and time. We are continuing our reading groups at 10am each morning and any volunteers would be wonderful, feel free to drop in. Any time you can assist is appreciated especially at this busy time of year.

2-3C This week 2-3C are looking at shapes and angles. We have been investigating tessellating patterns using shaped blocks. We are continuing to look at different cultures and how this can influence our thinking.

3B Week 3 already! Term 4 is flying by. We are enjoying comparing our lives with the lives of

other children in Australia and in other countries. We really enjoyed our talk from Anabelle and Imogen who shared what life is like for children in the Pilibra. They have recently travelled there on a school excursion. In maths we have been investigating percentages. We are becoming savvy shoppers!

3-4R What a busy but fantastic week in 3-4R! We are currently focusing on how lucky we are to

be Australian children and we are comparing our lives to others. In maths we have begun our unit on angles. Have you ever noticed how many angles are in your own home? If there are any interesting or obscure ones please send in a photo. I am having a wonderful week in 3-4R and thank you to all the parent helpers.

4T A busy and productive week in 4T. In writing we have focused on quality planning, variety of

sentence starters and counter arguments. Students have been highly engaged in discussion and describing how the needs of children differ among cultures around the world. We have had fun exploring the up-bringing and childhood of Alicia Keys and how this has inspired the lyrics in her song writing. In small groups, children changed the lyrics to her famous 'New York' song to their own life experiences. Creativity was on display within art. Students explored perspective and 3D effects. Reminder: return swimming notes ASAP.

4-5WP We have been focusing on extended multiplication this week in maths. Year 4 have been

learning how to multiply a set of 2 digit numbers together while Year 5 have been multiplying 3 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers. We will be exploring bar graphs with Mrs McLaren on Friday and continuing to work on our poetry unit. In literacy groups, we have been focusing on adverbial phrases as well as the use of conjunctions in compound sentences. We have enjoyed using our senses to write poems about the sea and have begun writing descriptions on the creature illustrated in the text 'The Island'. It's wonderful to see many students using descriptive devices such as similes and personification in their writing. Our HSIE topic this term is 'Cultures and Beliefs'. We are currently looking at the Thai culture, researching and discussing the information we have discovered about Buddhist beliefs in Thailand.

5A This week 5A have been looking at being sun safe and ways the sun affects us (especially

in this HOT weather!). We have also been looking at persuasive texts especially advertising. The students are designing their own advertisements later in the week. It has been a pleasure working with 5A this week. Mr L.

5-6D This week in maths class 5-6D students have been learning about geometric patterns and

number patterns. We have also learnt about finding the mean (average), mode, range and median. In literacy, we have been using the 'Key Word Strategy' to summarise information texts about Bali. We have summarised information about tourism in Bali and Balinese food. We have used atlases and google maps to identify and label the continents of the world. We have looked at the location of Bali in relation to where we live. Our Year 6 fundraising chocolate drive has begun and we have now ordered our Year 6 shirts. Year 5 students are all looking forward to the upcoming camp in Week 7.

6L In health we have been learning about our immune system and how we can support our

immune system by making considered lifestyle choices. Our work on Bali is well underway

Page 7: BOLWARRA PUBLIC SCHOOL€¦ · Maitland High, the Year 7 Advisor for 2014 and some current MHS students will speak with the incoming Year 7 students. A further orientation day will

and we all presented excellent ‘quick fact’ sheets as part of last week’s homework. In art we will be creating tropical island sunsets to show the beauty of a Balinese sunset. Revision of units of measurement and percentages has been our focus in mathematics.

Science Term 4 science is now in full swing. Stage 3 are investigating Ancient Australian landmarks

and are working on group projects which they will be presenting later in the term. In Stage 2 we are looking at built and natural environments and distinguishing between the two. Stage 1 are working hard on the water cycle and learning some surprising facts along the way. Kindergarten are also looking at water this term and the different ways we can use it.

Library

The librarians have been very busy preparing our "Christmas Windows" with bright and colourful pictures. The Library is a very well visited place during lunch times. The computer room is very popular, as well as lego, games, drawing and colouring in being favourites. The children are quite enthusiastic about using our Library - a good sign that it is being useful!

Environment The children have been out and about picking rubbish up with the pick up sticks. These

winds don’t help with the amount in the playground. Choir It's hard to come "back down to Earth" after having such a wonderful, inspirational day with

the Senior Choir at the Opera House last week. However....we have to prepare for next year, filming an audition with both the Junior and Senior choirs. There will be a workshop on this Friday from 11:30am until 2pm, for the MLC area schools. The senior choir will be attending to help support the singers from the other schools. It will be held in our hall. I would encourage students to join the choir, which is usually held on a Monday afternoon in our school hall from 4pm until 5pm.

Sport Swimming

Notes of interest went out last week to be included in the swimming program in weeks 6 and 7. We are limited to 180 students for this program. It is essential to return all notes to secure your child's position. Remember that Year 5 will not be participating as they are at camp. The program is available for Years 2, 3, 4 and 6.

Basketball Stage 2 will be lucky this term to be coached by Mitch Reader who is the American import playing for the Maitland Mustangs. He is the development officer for the area and we look forward to his expertise during sport on Fridays.

Athletics Congratulations to our State Athletics representatives who competed at Homebush last week. Our Junior boys relay placed 7th in their heat and Jorja also placed 7th in her heat of the 11yr girls 200m. Well done on such amazing performances against the best athletes in the state. All of these athletes were inspired by competing at this level of competition and aim to achieve even better results next year.

P&C NEWS THANK YOU!! A big thank you to all the volunteers who helped last Sunday shovel 110 cubic meters of mulch into the playgrounds. We had such an overwhelming response it was amazing and our expected time frame for the day was cut in half. We really do have wonderful parents at Bolwarra. Because of the extraordinary response and effort we decided to pick a volunteer of the day. Everyone on the day worked so hard it wasn't an easy task, however, we decided to award it to Claire and daughter Jessica. Claire and Jessica have received a $50 voucher to use in the uniform shop. The playgrounds just need a few little extras, some TLC and they are ready to go. There will be an official opening and many more people to thank. The P&C would also like to say a massive THANK YOU to Ruth for spending the time Monday night to share her knowledge for a Childhood Nutrition and Behaviour talk. Everyone took so much away from the night and again we are lucky to have such amazing parents at Bolwarra!! During the last P&C meeting the P&C's next AGM was bought up. This is looking to be held next February / early March. While there is still some time to go we are welcoming anyone interested in joining the P&C and interested in helping out and taking on a position on the P&C to come along to our next meeting or contact us to have a chat about positions and what they involve. While it may seem daunting, the P&C committee are very welcoming and will be there to help any new members and position holders every step of the way. If you are interested in anything please contact Leah at [email protected] Again THANK YOU! P&C Committee
