How to avoid pet parasitesThere are many microscopic parasites
that can plague pets. In healthy pets, theirimmune systems may be able to ward offcertain offenders. However, in most casesroutine vaccinations are necessary to keepa pet healthy and parasite-free. Dependingon the pet in the home, individuals shouldeducate themselves about potential para-sites, dangers and treatment.
Dog Owners
Chances are a dog will get a parasite atone point in his or her life. Some dogs areborn with parasites inherited from theirmother. Others become infected by comingin contact with another dog or throughitems they encounter during their dailytravels. Here are some common dog para-sites.
Ear mites: A dog who routinelyscratches at the ears may be experiencingear mites. Ear mites are hard to see withthe naked eye, but their waste, in the formof black specs, may be visible, and oftenlooks like coffee grounds. Ear mites aretransmitted through interaction with otherinfected animals. If one pet is found tohave ear mites, then it can easily be spreadto others. Owners should check all of thepets in the home. A veterinarian should becontacted for treatment options.
Heartworms: Heartworms are trans-mitted through the bite of a mosquito. These parasites are found in most areas ofthe country. Almost 300,000 dogs in theU.S. are infected with heartworms everyyear. Heartworms can affect many organsof the dog's body, but fortunately are easilypreventable with medication. Should theparasites grow and become a problem, however, they can be very difficult andexpensive to treat.
Mange: Demodex is a parasitic mitethat lives in the hair follicle and oil glandsof animals. The deterioration of the skinand fur is called mange. Healthy pets canusually fend off these mites, but when they
become a problem, they may cause skinirritation and bald spots. A skin scraping isnecessary to test for the mites and mange.
Hookworms: Similar to tapeworms, hookworms are an intestinal parasite. Theyare contracted by walking on soil that con-tains hookworm larvae. The larvae burrowinto the animal's skin and then make theirway to the intestines. Humans can also beaffected by hookworms. Hookworms cancause blood loss, poor weight gain andother problems.
Cat Owners
Cats contract many of the same para-sites as dogs. Veterinarian care and diagno-sis may be needed to offer answers fortreatment. Here are some additional condi-tions that may affect cats.
Walking dandruff: Cats can becomeinfected with Cheyletiellosis, more com-monly known as walking dandruff. Theculprit is a mite that causes extensive scal-ing of skin cells in cats, dogs and rabbits.Long-haired cats are at greater risk forcontagion. Humans also are susceptible.Oftentimes a cat infestation of walkingdandruff is revealed only after a humanbecomes infected.
Toxoplasmosis: Cats may swallowcysts in the soil or in infected feces thatcontain toxoplasma gondii parasites. Asthe parasite multiplies, cat feces maybecome heavily infected with cysts andbecome a threat to humans as well.Individuals with compromised immunesystems or women who are pregnant maybecome quite ill from toxoplasmosis. Catscan also become infected by hunting birdsand rodents, which may be infected withthe parasite.
Parasites can be a blight on a normallyhappy relationship with a pet. But practic-ing proper hygiene, routinely inspectinganimals for abnormal behavior, and havingregular veterinary check-ups can keep apet parasite-free.

The correlation between late-night eating and weight gain hasbeen studied and debated for quite a while. Although commonsense might suggest there is a connection, there is no statisticalproof to confirm the claim.
Many of the studies involving late-night eating have been con-ducted on lab mice or on people who are deemed "late sleepers,"not necessarily on people who routinely eat the biggest or mostcaloric meals late in the day.
Those who are dieting are routinely told to cut off meals after7 or 8 p.m. to improve metabolic rates and reduce weight gain.Although it would seem to be good advice, there is no definitivescientific research that equates eating at night to weight gain.
The speculation behind the eating and weight gain connectionhas to do with metabolism and human evolution. Humans evolvedfrom situations where they ate and foraged between sunrise andsunset. There were no video games to play at night, no TVshows, and certainly no refrigerators to raid for late-night snacks. Thebody simply adapted to getting the bulk of its caloric intake inbetween daylight hours. Furthermore, people tended to be theirmost active during the day, when calories consumed could beburned off through exercise or daily activity. At night people tend-ed to simply be lying around relaxing or sleeping. The caloriescan't be burned off.
Others debate that this is a myth, that calories consumed aresimply calories. They do not weigh more if they are eaten at nightor during the day. Furthermore, the body's metabolism never stopsworking, organs are functioning and energy is being used even asone sleeps. Opponents to the "late night eating equals weightgain" theory state that it's not what is eaten at a specific time thatmatters, but it's how many calories are consumed over a week ormonth. As anyone who has tried to diet knows, one day of dietarychanges will do little, if anything, to influence a person's weight.Weight loss is a process instead of a quick fix.
Limiting caloric intake - no matter what time it occurs - willhelp a person lose weight. That's because it limits the number ofcalories a person will need to burn off. Routinely eating severalsmall meals a day can stave off hunger pangs and reduce thepropensity for overeating or eating out of boredom at night. Foodsconsumed at night, including comfort foods, tend to be high incalories and fat anyway. Some people do find that eating a lightsnack about an hour before bed, such as a few crackers withcheese, can induce sleep and keep the body satiated until morn-ing.
There's no strong evidence that eating late at night plays a rolein weight gain. It's rather the number of calories and types offoods eaten as part of a normal diet.
Does late-night eating cause weight gain?
A human vaccine for prostate cancer has been successfullyused in lab mice to cure the disease, prompting some to suggest acure for men suffering from prostate cancer is on the horizon.
A report published in the journal Nature Medicine states thatresearchers in the United Kingdom and those at the Mayo Clinicin the United States created a therapy that cured prostate cancer inmice with no apparent side effects. The treatment works in muchthe same way that other vaccinations work for various diseases.
The researchers assembled DNA libraries that included healthyprostate DNA and put them in virus shells, the protective proteinshells that surround many known viruses. These substances werethen injected into the infected mice. The treatment tricks theimmune system into producing antibodies specific to fight theparticular cancer. The mice were cured.
This may shed promising light on not only prostate cancertreatment, but treatments for many different types of cancer.Using these vaccines may negate the reliance on radiation andchemotherapy to shrink tumors, and instead look solely towardthe body's own powerful immune system.
Although the mice were cured, human trials are still at leasttwo years away, according to researchers. It is still unknownwhether the treatment will be effective in humans, but many
researchers remain optimistic.About Prostate CancerOther than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common
cancer among North American men. The American CancerSociety estimates that around 200,000 new cases of prostate can-cer are diagnosed each year. In 2010, roughly 30,000 men died ofprostate cancer in the U.S.
Prostate cancer forms in a gland that only men have, which islocated below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The role ofthe prostate is to first produce and then store a transparent liquidthat is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen.
In healthy men, the prostate is the size of a walnut and can befelt during a routine examination. In many older men, the prostateenlarges due to inflammation, called prostatitis. If it enlarges toomuch it can restrict urine flow and cause reproductive problems.
Prostate cancer is routinely found in older men. Regular rectalexaminations by a physician can help determine if prostate cancermay be present. A blood test called Prostate Specific Antigen(PSA) is also effective. PSAis low in normal prostates. Raised testresults could be indicative of disease in the prostate. Although itcan't definitively test for cancer, it can alert a doctor that there is aproblem that requires further investigation.
Cure on the horizon for prostate cancer?

Last-minute vacationsBy David Uffington
If you didn't plan for a vacation thissummer but are determined to get a break,it's still possible even at this late date. Infact, the approaching end of summermight work in your favor as owners try tofill last-minute vacancies.
Look for vacation rentals that are with-in a few hours drive of home. You'll saveprecious vacation time by not battlingcrowds and security at airports and wast-ing time in the air, not to mention savingmoney on airfare and transportation.Vacation rentals generally will accommo-date your whole family and allow you tosave money by cooking your own meals. Many provide laundry facilities.
While you might think you want aplace with activities suited to your inter-ests, consider taking this opportunity totry something new. If you're into golf, gofor a lakeside cabin that comes with fish-ing poles and a canoe. If you like waterskiing, opt for a condo in an historic cityfor a change of pace.
Check www.vacationhomerentals.comand click on your state. You'll find rentalscategorized by county and town, with lotsof photos and descriptions. If a propertysounds interesting, check the availability. For verification or to ask if there havebeen cancellations, contact the ownerusing the online form. Ask if any end-of-
season deals are available. Don't miss theLast Minute Deals link at the top of themain page.
Check www.vacationrentals.com, andagain click on your state. You'll be able tonarrow your choices by date, reviews andwhether the rental has a pool or allowspets. You can select multiple rentals tocompare. Check the activities on each list-ing for local attractions. This site providesthe owner's name and telephone number,as well as an online contact form.
If you want a lot of amenities, considera timeshare rental. With timeshares, own-ers "own" a certain week or weeks eachyear when they have use of the accommo-dations. They can't always use thoseweeks and will rent out the property.Timeshares generally have a full menu ofamenities, and many are luxurious resorts.Search online for timeshares in your state.Call the timeshare office directly, as it'slikely to have a list of rentals.
As always, ask whether any discountsare available.

By Tony RizzoHOLLYWOOD - Just when you
thought you knew everything aboutMichael Jackson comes a letter from adevout fan asking, "Has Michael Jackson'sname been restored to the Gardner StreetElementary School he attended when hewas 11 years old?" In 1989, Gardner StreetElementary School, in Hollywood, namedits auditorium, in big silver letters, the"Michael Jackson Auditorium." Michael was so honored, heshowed up for the unveiling. The King of Pop also paid thesalary for the school's music teacher, planted memorial rosebushes near the playground and autographed the wall of hissixth-grade classroom.
In 2003, when Michael faced serious charges for alleged mis-conduct with a child, the school covered his name with woodenboards and it just read "Auditorium." Even after Michael wasacquitted of all charges, his name was not uncovered. InOctober 2010, after his death, it took a public petition drive toget his name restored to its rightful place. The question is ...why was his name ever covered? In this country, isn't a personinnocent until proven guilty? Shouldn't officials have waiteduntil after the trial, instead of presuming his guilt? I'll bet ourreader asked that question so all of you could know this story!
Glenn Close dreamed of bringing "Albert Nobbs" to the bigscreen ever since she won an Obie Award in l982 for doing anoff-Broadway stage version. Now not only is she producing andstarring in the film, but she's co-written the screenplay, whichhas her playing a woman who passes herself off as a man towork in 19th-century Dublin. Brenda Fricker ("My Left Foot")and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, ("The Tudors") also star. What doesGlenn Close look like as a man? Let's just say you'll have a hardtime getting the image of a clean-shaven Conan O'Brien out ofyour mind!

BeautifulblackberriesBy Angela Shelf Medearis
Blackberries are one of the great giftsof summer. The berries bloom from mid-to late June, and in most parts of the coun-ty, start ripening toward the middle of July.Ripe and unripe blackberries frequentlyappear on the plants at the same time. Theberries are small, green, hard and sour atfirst, becoming larger, juicier and sweeteras they ripen. Here are some great black-berry facts, tips and a recipe to help youwith your summer berry picking and eat-ing!
Blackberry Facts:•Select plump, firm and fully black
berries. Unripe berries will not ripen oncepicked.
•Do the math and be careful not toover-purchase, as blackberries quicklymold when left at room temperature andonly last a few days in the refrigerator.
•You easily can freeze berries that youcan't use right away -- just wash, cut thehulls off and spread the berries out on abaking pan. Place the berries in the freezer. When frozen, place them into a re-sealablebag, pressing out as much air as possible, and then freeze the berries.
•The U.S. Department of Agriculturesays 1 cup of blackberries has about 62calories.
•A cup of blackberries, not packeddown, weighs almost one-third of a pound.
•Blackberries were enjoyed by theancient Greeks, who believed them to be acure for diseases of the mouth and throat,as well as a preventative against many ail-ments, including gout.
•The blackberry leaf also was used asan early hair dye, having been recom-mended by Nicholas Culpeper, the 17th-century English herbalist, to be boiled in alye solution in order to "maketh the hairblack."
•Blackberry tea was said to be a curefor dysentery during the Civil War. During
outbreaks of dysen-tery, temporarytruces were declaredto allow both Unionand Confederate sol-diers to "go blackber-rying" to forage forblackberries to wardoff the disease.
•Researchers have known for quitesome time that berries contain antioxi-dants, which help to fight cancer-causingfree radicals. A study at the University ofOhio has found that blackberries are themost potent cancer fighting berries of themall, by nearly 40 percent!
•This delicious Blackberry, Pecan andGoat Cheese Salad showcases the sweet-ness of the berry while providing thecrunch and smoothness of the pecans andgoat cheese. It's the perfect summer salad!

Tips to recycle thegarage-sale wayBy Donna Erickson
Planning and running a family garage sale can be more thana moneymaking venture for you and your kids. Dollars might bean incentive for parting with outgrown toys, books and clothes, but your kids also will be reaping the benefits of hands-on expe-rience in marketing, merchandising and sales.
Here are some tips to recycle and turn your castoffs to treas-ures the garage-sale way:
Get Ready:
•Set aside time before the sale to help your kids clear theclutter and sort through books, toys, DVDs and clothes. Washitems that are soiled, and put jackets, shirts and blouses onhangers to show off the merchandise. People don't like to dig inpiles of stuff. If a toy has small parts, corral the pieces, put themin a small bag and tape the bag to the toy.
•Put price stickers on items and price to sell. •Although you might advertise the sale in newspapers, your
kids can make their own fliers to distribute to neighbors to pub-licize the items they are selling.
Eye-Catchers:
•Make your sale "an experience" with small touches. Covertables with bright fabric, hang a mirror near clothing and hats, and play music on a DVD player. If your garden is in fullbloom, fill jars with flowers and sell by the stem.
•Draw in shoppers with a big poster with "ExtraordinaryKids Stuff" printed in large letters in the kids' department.
•Set out a table or box of "free stuff." You'll be surprised tosee what people will take for free!
•By far, snacks are a super draw. Sell coffee and cold bever-ages. And who can refuse buying a cookie or sweet roll whilestrolling around your sale?
Selling:
•Find a cash box and be sure someone is always in charge ofit throughout the day.
•Be prepared to bargain, especially for bikes, scooters andskates.
•At the end of the sale, gather leftover items in good condi-tion, remove the stickers and donate to a nonprofit organization.

Have some fun in the sun while cooling offTemperatures are soaring, and to escape
the heat, everyone has been cooped upinside for what seems like days on end.The kids have grown tired of TV andvideo games and are starting to pick ateach other. Time to cool things off withsome wet and wild fun in the sun. Haveyour kids invite some friends over, gathereveryone together in the backyard and playthese games.
Catch It: For this game, you will needseveral water balloons and a milk jug foreach player. Remove the top half of themilk jugs to make catchers and hand oneto each player. Then move someplacehigh, such as on a deck, and toss the waterballoons as fast as you can for players tocatch. The player that catches the mostwins.
Don't Spill It: For this game, you willneed two empty 20-ounce soda bottles, two large buckets of water and two smallpaper cups. Divide players into two teamsand designate the race course. Set a bucketof water at the start line for each team andappoint a person from each team to serveas the bottle holder and lie down at the endof the race course with the empty bottle ontheir chest. Then give each team a papercup, and upon your signal, instruct them tofill the cup, race down to the bottle holder, dump the water from the cup into the bot-tle, and race back to the start line, spillingas little water as possible along the way.The team with the most water in the bottleafter everyone has had a chance to runwins.
Fill 'Er Up: For this game, you will
need two empty paint cans and four largebuckets. Divide players into two teams anddesignate the race course.Fill a bucket with water foreach team and set it at thestart line. Set the remainingbuckets at the opposite endof the course. Upon yoursignal, instruct the teams tofill the paint can with water, race it to the empty bucket, dump the water into thebucket and race back, spilling as little as possiblealong the way. The first teamto fill their bucket wins.
Jump and Splash: For this game, youwill need a jump rope and a paper cupfilled with water for each player. Designate
two people to turn the jump rope. Thenhave each player jump rope for two min-
utes with cup in hand, try-ing not to spill any water. The player with the mostwater in their cup aftereveryone has had a turnwins.
Shoot the ShavingCream: For this game, youwill need several cans ofshaving cream and a watergun for each player. Fill theguns with water and passthem out. Apply shavingcream to everyone's torso,
and upon your signal, have them try toshoot off the shaving cream from eachother with their water guns. The playerwith the most shaving cream remainingwhen time is called wins.
Spill the Beans: For this game, youwill need some beans and a paper cup anda water gun for each player. Divide playersinto pairs and have them stand six feetapart. Then give one player in each pair acup with several beans in the bottom andthe other player a water gun filled withwater. Upon your signal, have the playerswith the water gun try to fill their partner'scup with water and make the beans floatout. The first pair to succeed wins.
Toss the Water Balloon: For thisgame, you will need several water bal-loons and a bucket. Have players line upand set a bucket 10 feet in front of them. Then give each player a chance to toss 10water balloons into the bucket. The playerthat tosses the most into the bucket wins.
Almost any backyard game favorite canbe converted into a water game. Kids liketo play tag? Give the player who's It awater gun to tag players with. Can't thinkof a way to add in some water fun? Noproblem. Turn on the sprinklers and playthe game under them. The more waterinvolved, the wetter everyone will get andthe more fun they will have.
