YOUR ONE STOP AUTO REPAIR & TOWING SERVICE

Start onlinebefore buyingor selling homeBy David Uffington

Spring and summer are historically thebiggest times of the year for buying andselling homes. At the same time, becauseof the economy, if you're in the market tobuy or sell, you need a little help.

The first step to a successful purchaseor sale is to learn as much as you can.

Two online real-estate sites, Zillow andTrulia, are good places to get not onlybaseline information, but to learn tricks ofthe trade.

Some features of Zillow[www.zillow.com]:

"Zestimate" - a property's valuationbased on comparables and database infor-mation, which you need to know whetheryou're buying or selling. The value cancome in handy when comparing to anappraisal or a market analysis by a real-estate agent.

Inventory - Whether there are more orless properties in your area available forsale impacts you as a buyer or a seller.More properties on the market make iteasier for buyers to negotiate a price, butforces sellers to price more competitively.

Make Me Move -- Potential buyers canmake an offer via email.

Listing - Promote your property for freefor 60 days either by yourself or throughan agent.

Rental - Zillow can help determine thecorrect rental price for your property ifyou decide not to sell.

Some features of Trulia[www.trulia.com]:

•Search for homes by price, featuresand open houses - Get smartphone alertswhen there is activity on properties you'reinterested in.

•Review school ratings, crime andbusiness comments from those who livelocally or participate in the Q&A forum.

•Read articles by real-estate experts ontopics ranging from avoiding surprises inthe buying process, to how to makingspringtime changes to attract buyers.

Whether you're buying or selling thisyear, schedule an information-only talkwith a local real-estate agent. Seek profes-sional advice in advance of taking anysteps toward buying or selling.

If you're a buyer: Check your creditscores. Send for your credit reports andreview them for any errors. Get pre-quali-fied so you know your price range.

If you're a seller: Make all smallrepairs, and do a bit of landscaping. Getmultiple opinions about whether the costof a more major project (updated kitchenor baths) will likely be recouped in yoursales price.

In short, gather all the information youcan before you move forward.

Even if you haven't heard the TheyMight Be Giants song "Istanbul (NotConstantinople)" you are probably awarethat the Turkish metropolis has undergonename changes throughout its long history. It seems that when the name wasConstantinople, it was common for resi-dents of the area to refer to things "in thecity," which in the Aegean dialect ofGreek is pronounced "is tan polin."Eventually the name stuck, and in 1930Turkish authorities formally adopted thename Istanbul.

Tips for a memorable Memorial Day barbecue

A guide to grilling with wood and smoke

To many Americans, Memorial Day marks the unofficialbeginning of summer. Though summer does not actually beginuntil later in June, Memorial Day weekend has become synony-mous with backyard barbecues and trips to the beach.

Backyard barbecues, in particular, have become a staple ofMemorial Day weekend and the focus of many people's festivi-ties. This year, consider the following tips to make yourMemorial Day barbecue safe and memorable.

•Place the grill in a safe spot. Before any guests arrive or anyfires are lit, make sure the grill is safely located on flat ground.Ideally, the grill should not be on the grass and should be awayfrom trees or shrubs and any other flammable materials. If youneed lighter fluid to start a fire, promptly put the fluid back instorage, away from the grill, once the fire has been lit.

•Clean the grill. Memorial Day marks the opening of grillingseason for many grillmasters. Make sure the grill has been thor-oughly cleaned and that there are no leftover ashes from lastseason clogging the vents. Even if you thoroughly cleaned thegrill at the end of last season, give it a once-over with a soapysponge at the start of the season to clean any cobwebs, or dirtand grime that might have accumulated over the winter.

•Stock up on charcoal. Falling short in the charcoal depart-ment is a backyard barbecue faux pas that can bring the festivi-ties to a halt. Because the weather in late May can sometimes beunpredictable, make sure you have extra charcoal on handshould strong winds or colder temperatures make it difficult tobuild a strong fire.

•Spice things up. Why not use this year's Memorial Day bar-

becue to add a little extra flavor to tradi-tional barbecue fare? Soak some driedherbs like rosemary, bay leaves ororegano in water and add them to thegrill. These flavorful herbs will make thefood taste better, and the grill will likelyemit a more pleasant fragrance as well.

•Prepare foods for guests with vary-ing palates. Vegetarians and vegans lovea good backyard barbecue just as muchas their carnivorous friends and family

members. Cook some vegetable kabobs and prepare some saladsfor guests who don't eat meat. Consider purchasing a smallergrill for veggies only, as vegetarians and vegans might not pre-fer to eat kabobs grilled on the same grill as meat.

• Keep the forks in the utensil drawer. Never use a fork to doa spatula's job. Poking foods on the grill with a fork allows thejuices that make grilled foods so delicious to escape, resulting indrier fare that's not nearly as flavorful. Use a spatula or tongs toflip foods, including burgers, steaks, chicken, and even hot dogs.

•Make sure foods have completely defrosted before placingthem on the grill. When cold meat is placed on the grill, itreduces the grill's temperature and prevents juices from gettingseared in the food. So make sure all foods have been defrostedto ensure your foods are flavorful and the grill stays hot.

This year, welcome the unofficial start of summer with a suc-cessful Memorial Day barbecue in the backyard with family, friends and great food.

Slow smoked chicken, ribs, and brisket are staples of the tra-ditional American barbecue. The deep smoky flavors and fall-off-the-bone tenderness is a hallmark of the low-and-slow - alow temperature, cooked over a long time - cooking technique.

Originally, open pit fires were used for the slow cookingprocess. Luckily, with a smoker box, wood chips and a gas bar-becue, backyard chefs can now taste the smoky flavor of woodand cook with the convenience of gas.

Here are some helpful tips for adding smoky flavor to yournext backyard meal.

•Wood chips should be soaked in water for at least an hourbefore using. Drain them and add them to a stainless steel orcast iron smoker box.

•Fill the smoker box two-thirds of the way with chips andplace the box on either the heat plate above the burner or on thecooking grids.

•Add wood chips five to 10 minutes before putting your meat

on the grill, raw meats take on smoky flavors much better thaneven slightly cooked meats. Having a smoky environment tostart will enhance and deepened flavors.

•Smoked meats will have a deep, pink ring on the outsidethis indicates how deep the smoke has penetrated your meat.

•Hickory is probably the most famous smoking hardwood. Itimparts a strong hearty flavor to meats and is used mostly tosmoke pork shoulders and ribs.

•Mesquite is one of the most popular woods, it is sweeter andmore delicate than hickory, and is a perfect complement to rich-ly flavored meats such as beef, duck or lamb.

•Apple has a sweet, mild flavor and is used mostly with porkand game, but can be used for poultry as well.

Popcorn... a superfood?Move over fruits and vegetables.

Popcorn might have more antioxi-dants and be more capabale ofimproving the immune system thanmany items in the produce aisle.

Popcorn has been enjoyed as asnack for centuries. Although itsinventor is unknown, popcorn earshave been found in Mexican cavesdating back 5,600 years. PeruvianIndians in the 16th century wereknown to eat popcorn and also use itas a decoration on necklaces and head dresses.

In North America, popcorn is largely associated with going to the movies.According to special collections at the National Agriculture Library, North Americansconsume roughly 17.3 billion quarts of popped corn each year. People who enjoy pop-corn as a snack may be happy to learn this crunchy food has many health benefits.

According to recent information from researchers at the University of Scranton inPennsylvania, popcorn contains more antioxidants than fruits and vegetables.Antioxidants are known to help fight and protect against cancer, heart disease andother ailments.

Although it was previously known that popcorn contained antioxidants known aspolyphenols, the exact amounts of the phenols remained a mystery. Joe Vinson, aPh.D. who presented the popcorn findings at the annual meeting of the AmericanChemical Society, found that there are twice as many phenols in popcorn per servingas there is in sweet corn or fruit. This is largely due to the high water content in freshfruits and vegetables.

Water content in foods can dilute polyphenols by as much as 90 percent, saysVinson's research. Popped corn is very low in water so it has a much higher concentra-tion of polyphenols.

For those who want to add extra nutrient power to popcorn, consider mixing indried fruits, like raisins and dried cranberries. Along the same premise, the low watercontent of dried fruits ensures the dried fruits contain more antioxidants than theirfresh, juicy counterparts.

Another benefit to popcorn is it is made from an entirely unprocessed whole grain.A serving of popcorn can offer more than 70 percent of the recommended daily valueof whole grain in a diet. People may want to skip those enriched cereals and breadsand choose low-fat popcorn instead.

Although the findings about the nutritional value of popcorn are promising, thisdoes not mean individuals should give up on fruits and vegetables. Those foods con-tain other vitamins and nutrients that popcorn does not, such as vitamin C. Also, dous-ing popcorn with salt and butter negates its nutritional benefits. The best way to enjoypopcorn is to pop it with air and eat it plain. Microwave popcorn is another healthymethod of making popcorn, provided it's a no-butter variety. And don't skip the annoy-ing kernels. It appears that the highest concentration of polyphenols are contained inthose hard bits that have a tendency to get caught between the teeth.

It has long been known that popcorn is a healthy snack. Now researchers have dis-covered just how much of an antioxidant powerhouse popcorn can be.

Pool parties can make birthdays easier, funIn an era of over-the-top, ultra-expen-

sive birthday parties whose extravagancerivals lavish weddings, some might find itinvigorating to scale things down and hosta pool party.

A pool party is an ideal way to host abirthday or other special event withouthaving to do a lot of planning. All that istypically needed is an available pool andparty participants ready to have a goodtime.

Many people mistakenly think that apool party is something that can only bedone during the warm weather. Actually, you can plan a pool party any time of theyear. Many fitness gyms, schools andscuba certification locations open theirpools up to public parties. Therefore, whether the event is held in June orJanuary, chances are there is a pool avail-able that can accommodate the crowd.

One main advantage to a pool party isthat the pool is the entertainment factor forthe guests. There's no need to spend hoursthinking up games or other forms of enter-tainment. Swimming, splashing and jump-ing into the water will keep many guestsoccupied for hours. If you prefer morestructure, consider relay races, divinggames and water volleyball.Party preparation: Start with the invita-tions when preparing the party. Select acolored paper or pattern that is reminiscentof pool water. A vibrant aquamarine wouldfit the bill. Print out a catchy phrase thatdescribes the upcoming event (i.e.,Jimmy's Party is Bound to be a Splash),and be sure to remind guests to bring tow-els and bathing suits. If you will not haveenough chairs for all guests, ask them onthe invite to bring a beach chair as well.

Put together a selection of music thatevokes summer fun or tropical locations. There are bound to be compilationplaylists available for purchase. An instru-mental steel drum album also would beeffective. Remember, whether it is warmor cold outside, this pool party should lookand feel hot. Music will help set thatmood.

Tie decorations into the theme.Purchase or rent inflatable palm trees andstring lantern lights around the party area,if possible. Keep plenty of beach balls onhand to toss around in or out of the water.Table linens can be purchased in brighthues to match the blue, red and yellowstrips of a beach ball. Be sure to haveplenty of fun pool toys available, such asfloats and water guns. Pool party food: Think about which foodsto serve at a pool party. Light, finger foodsare ideal because they won't sit heavily inguests' stomachs. Think about tea sand-wiches, fruit and vegetable skewers, sal-ads, and shish kabobs, served along withchips and dips.

Create a number of tropical-inspiredbeverages. Anything with the taste ofmelon, mango and pineapple would fit inwith the theme. Serve the same types offrozen drinks in both alcoholic and nonal-coholic varieties so everyone can enjoy ataste. Finger foods reduce the amount ofcutlery and dishes needed and thatamounts to a faster clean-up.

One of the final factors of pool-partyfood is the dessert. Look to individuallyserved desserts that can be eaten by hand.Opt for cupcakes with blue frosting and agummy fish on top. Ice cream cone sun-daes are ideal on warm days.Pool party safety: When hosting a poolparty, emphasize safety. Remember, a per-son can drown in just a few inches ofwater in a matter of minutes. According toKids Health, drowning is the second mostcommon form of death from injuriesamong kids under the age of 14.

Here are some precautions to take whenhosting a pool party.

•Designate a life guard. If your party isat a public pool, ensure a lifeguard will beon duty. This person should not leave hisor her post unless someone else relievesthem. Designate a lifeguard at a privateparty as well, even hiring an off-duty life-guard if no guests can perform the neces-sary duties.

•Make sure fences around the pool are

tall enough to prevent accidental falls intothe pool and that they are secured withself-latching gates.

•Insist that children who cannot swimuse a Coast Guard-approved life vest oranother approved flotation device.

•Be sure no one pushes or jumps onothers in and around the pool.

•Limit the number of pool floats in thewater so that visibility of the lifeguard willnot be impaired.

•Don't let anyone chew gum or eat inthe pool. It can lead to choking.

• Don't allow running around theperimeter of the pool.

•Jumping and diving should be prohib-

ited if the water is too shallow.•Make sure guests know to follow the

pool rules or they won't be allowed toswim.

A pool party is a surefire way to have afun event any time of the year. It is easy toplan and host, and guests will walk awaywith many fond memories

By Angela Shelf MedearisEating a healthy, well-balanced meal is

important at any age, but it's especiallynecessary for seniors. Here are some tipsfor staying healthy in your golden years:

•Get plenty of water. •Eat high-quality proteins such as

eggs, lean meats, poultry and fish. • Incorporate a good balance of carbo-

hydrates and fiber such as bread, cereals, pasta and other grain products into yourdiet.

•Get calcium from low-fat sourcessuch as milk, yogurt, cheeses and broc-coli.

•Stay active physically, mentally andsocially.

Sometimes, because of a variety ofhealth challenges, a soft food diet is rec-ommended for senior citizens. This budg-et-friendly recipe for Fettuccine WithSun-Dried Tomatoes serves two, but canbe easily doubled to serve more. Eggs areused as a high-quality but inexpensivesource of protein. It's easy to make andeat, and freezes well.

Fettuccine withSun-Dried Tomatoes

4 ounces dried spinach or whole-wheat fettuccine

1/2 cup fresh or frozen broccoli flo-rets

1 to 2 ounces sundried tomatohalves, quartered

2 tablespoons prepared pesto sauce1 teaspoon Italian seasoning1 teaspoon freshly ground black

pepper1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper2 large eggs1/4 cup low-fat milk1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan

cheese1/4 cup chopped basil or parsley,

optional1. Combine the fettuccine, broccoli

andtomatoes in large pot of boiling, saltedwater. Cook until pasta is tender but firm, about 6 to 8 minutes; drain, reserving 1/2cup of pasta water.

2. Return the pasta, broccoli and toma-toes to the pot. Add the pesto, Italian sea-soning, pepper and cayenne pepper; tossuntil evenly coated.3. Beat the eggs andmilk in a bowl until blended. Pour eggmixture over pasta, stirring gently to coatand combine.

3. Cook over medium heat, stirringgently, until the mixture thickens and novisible liquid from the egg remains. Addin some of the reserved pasta water, asneeded, if the pasta seems too dry.Sprinkle with cheese and basil or parsley,if desired. Serves 2.

publications.”--Verle and Wanda Schmidt

Preparation makes weeknight dinners easierThere is often no denying how busy the week can be

for the average individual or family. Very frequentlypeople eschew cooking dinner simply because they findthe process takes too much time out of their already hec-tic days. Some people look to fast food or dining instead, but this can be costly and potentially unhealthy. Thoughhome cooking can be time-consuming, planning aheadfor weeknight meals can drastically reduce the time ittakes to whip up a good meal.

While it may seem like people are spending moretime eating out, statistics point to the contrary. In a 2009survey sponsored by CBS News, 43 percent of Americanrespondents said they cook 6 to 7 nights out of the week, and 32 percent of the respondents said they cook 4 to 5nights out of the week.

Individuals who are still dining out or ordering ininstead of cooking may benefit from the following time-saving tips.

•Make a meal schedule. Take a cue from schools andoffice cafeterias and create a weekly or monthly mealcalendar. Come up with items you enjoy eating and com-bine them for meals. Use cooking magazines for inspira-tion if necessary. Having a schedule of what you will becooking enables you to shop for the ingredients inadvance and to know exactly what you'll be serving eachnight -- two time savers.

•Create a detailed shopping list. Use the meal calen-dar to make a list of the ingredients you will need for

each meal. Some ingredients will overlap (i.e. freshspices, like garlic and parsley), but there may be someingredients unique to a particular recipe. Buying all ofthe ingredients in advance enables you to have them onhand when it's time to cook, instead of running out forsomething that is missing.

•Do preparation work on the weekend. Spend a fewhours prepping food over the weekend for the upcoming

week. If vegetables need to be diced, do so then andstore them in zip-top plastic bags. Meats that take a longtime to cook can be pre-cooked and simply reheatedbefore being served. Certain meals, like casseroles andbaked pasta dishes, can be made entirely and stored inthe freezer. Having some of the work already done mayhelp to make weeknight meals easier to cook.

•Invest in a slow cooker. If you prefer a hot mealright after walking in the door, a slow cooker can be aninvaluable tool that delivers meals-on-demand. A slowcooker works by cooking ingredients at a very low tem-perature over a long period of time. Ingredients can beadded in the morning before you leave for work, and themeal will be ready and hot by the time you return home. There are dozens of different slow cooker recipes andcookbooks completely devoted to meals made in a slowcooker. It is a versatile tool and one that can be an assetin a busy person's kitchen.

•Think outside the meal box. Dinner doesn't necessar-ily have to consist of "dinner" foods. Turn pancakes, eggs and sandwiches into heartier meals with the addi-tion of a few ingredients. Omelets can be enhanced withcubed meats and vegetables. Top pancakes with freshfruit and granola for a more substantial meal. Paninis arepopular these days, so take an ordinary sandwich andmake it gourmet just by pressing it and heating.

Taking the time to plan ahead for meals means thatweeknight dinners can be less stressful to put together.

Taking some time to prep for weeknightmeals means you can enjoy delicious foodsat home without spending too much time inthe kitchen.

Rice balls are fried delicacies sold in many Italianspecialty food stores and markets. Often filled with meator cheese, rice balls can be bite-sized snacks or softball-sized meals.

Due to some uncertainty about how to keep rice ballsfrom falling apart, many home chefs shy away fromrecreating them in their own kitchens. However, with alittle know-how, anyone can create delicious rice balls.

Rice Balls1 cup rice with a high starch content to make it

sticky, like aborio2 cups waterSalt for flavoringHomemade or prepared breadcrumbs2 to 3 ounces mozzarella cheese, cubed

1 to 2 eggs, whisked1/2 cup homemade or prepared tomato sauceFew sprigs parsley, choppedSalt and pepper to tasteVegetable oil for fryingIn a saucepan, bring water and a pinch of salt to a

boil. Add rice to boiling water and reduce heat to sim-mer. Cover pot and cook, roughly 15 minutes, until allthe water is absorbed by the rice.

Drain the water and put rice in a bowl. Add the toma-to sauce and mix. Season with parsley, salt and pepper totaste. Allow the mixture to sit and cool to room tempera-ture before handling.

Have beaten eggs ready in a shallow bowl. Pourbreadcrumbs into another bowl and set aside.

Take the rice mixture and gather some in your hand.(Wet hands between making rice balls to keep the ricefrom sticking to your hands). Cup and form into a bowl.Push a piece of the mozzarella cheese into the center ofthe rice ball and reshape.

Roll the rice ball into the eggs and then place into thebreadcrumbs to coat. Repeat the process if desired for athicker coating.

Repeat until all the rice is used. Place the formed riceballs into the refrigerator for several hours or overnightto set.

Heat oil in a deep frying pan. Place a few rice balls inat a time and cook until golden on all sides. Place onrack to drain. Repeat with all rice balls.

Serve and enjoy.

Don’t have your identity stolenEvery person in the country is unique and has an identifying

name and numbers assigned to him or her that help regulateaspects of his or her professional and personal life. When someform of a person's identification is stolen, this is known as identi-ty theft, and it can wreak havoc on finances and personal credit. There are a number of steps men and women can take to avoidbeing victimized by identity theft.

In the United States, a driver's license and a social securitynumber are used to identify individuals. (In Canada, individualsare issued social insurance numbers.) Credit cards are also issuedin a person's name, and unique numbers assigned enable individ-uals on the account to make purchases on credit. From debit cardPINnumbers to other sources of identification, the average per-son has a lot of information that separates him or her from oth-ers.

Identity theft has become a prolific problem. Having so manysources of identity around makes it easier for identity thieves totarget individuals. In a largely digital society, thieves havelearned how to capture credit card numbers and access socialsecurity numbers from correspondence over the Internet or sim-ply by reading magnetic-stripped cards right in a wallet. Theidentities of the deceased are also being stolen thanks to informa-tion published online.

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as ninemillion Americans have their identities stolen each year.According to a McMaster eBusiness Research Centre study, 6.5percent of the total Canadian population reported being a victimof identity theft in 2007. Most identity theft cases involve fraudu-lent credit card transactions.

There are different ways to protect yourself from identitytheft. The first step is identifying the various ways thieves mightgather a potential victim's personal information.

Simple stealing: Thieves can get personal information andcredit cards simply by taking wallets or purses. Some take mail, including bank statements or newly issued credit cards, out ofmailboxes. Some thieves take information from personnelrecords or bribe employees who may have access to this informa-tion.

Trash hunting: They say one man's trash is another man'streasure, and some identity thieves put this adage to the test. When individuals discard bank statements or credit card billswithout shredding them, the papers can be taken out of trash cansor bags. Anything thrown out with a form of identification on itcan be stolen and used.

Phishing, vishing and shmishing: Phishing is a term thatdescribes identity theft tactics surrounding e-mail and Internetuse. With phishing, individuals are lured to give out personalinformation via an e-mail that is thought to be from a reputable

financial establishment. Anti-phishing technology has beendeveloped to pinpoint phishing e-mails, but hackers and phishershave developed their own methods to thwart it. Physically askingfor information over the phone is known as vishing. Informationrequested over texts or short messages is known as shmishing.

Skimming: Thieves use special devices attached to creditcard readers to store data for later use. There are also devices thatcan read credit card information while the card is still in a wallet.

Pretexting: According to the FTC, pretexters use a variety oftactics to get personal information. For example, a pretexter maycall, claim he's from a research firm, and ask a person for hisname, address, birth date, and social security number. When thepretexter has the information he wants, he uses it to call that per-son's financial institution. He pretends to be the account holderor someone with authorized access to the account. The informa-tion may be later sold to a person looking to get credit.

Now that many of the identity theft methods have beenexplained, protecting oneself involves taking precautionary steps.

•Do not keep many credit cards in your wallet, and leavepassports and social security cards at home. The less personalitems you carry, the harder it becomes for would-be thieves toaccess your private information.

•Consider a locked mailbox or use a post office box if you areconcerned about mail theft.

•Shred all papers containing personal information before put-ting them in the trash or recycling bin.

•Always identify an individual before giving out personalinformation via phone, e-mail or text messages. Most financialinstitutions will not ask for information over e-mail or the tele-phone. If you are unsure, call the bank and ask for their policy. Also, even if the person is reputable, keep in mind that data canbe intercepted over phone lines or through digital channels ifthey are not secure.

•Watch your credit card as much as possible when using it fordining out or when it is taken out of your sight to be swiped.Routinely check your statements and credit scores to see if therewere unauthorized charges made. Also, there are special walletsthat prevent skimming of card information while the card is inyour wallet.

•When in doubt, do not give out any personal information.Try to do your business in person. Do not offer social securitynumbers to a survey-taker or anyone else contacting you over thephone. Being stringent in researching information requests cancut down on identity theft.

Although some people can resolve identity theft quickly, forothers it can take years and hundreds of dollars to repair theirnames. Taking a proactive approach to identity theft is the key tothwarting it.

Stand aloneATM’s a risk?

Stand-alone ATMs have becomeanother tool for criminals to steal theidentities of unsuspecting people. Asthe economy has struggled and smallbusinesses have failed, the market forpreviously owned stand-alone ATMshas grown. Small business ownersoften sell items that were in their stores, including stand-alone ATMs, to recouptheir losses. Criminals can find thesemachines for just a few hundred dollarsonline and, once the software has beenrewritten, use the machines to stealusers' card information and PIN num-bers. Concerned men and womenshould only use ATMs located in banklobbies to reduce their risk of identitytheft.

Your electronicdevices hacked?

Many people are worried about theirelectronic devices thanks to identitytheft and hacking. It's widely knownthat thieves can steal credit card infor-mation by swiping or reading your cardwith a special device. In addition, cellphones and Internet accounts can bebreached. What many may not know isthat other devices can be hacked aswell. Everything from insulin-deliverydevices on the body to baby monitorscan be tapped into, an invasion of pri-vacy that can have serious health impli-cations.

Did you log out?Don't stay "logged in" when surfing

the Internet. When surfing the Internet,it can be easier to stay signed in to ane-mail or bank account. While thissaves the trouble of having to remem-ber usernames and passwords, it alsomakes it very easy for thieves or hack-ers to access sensitive accounts.

Save water and stay greenIn many places in the United States,

water is scarcer than just about any othercommodity. We use water every day for

showering, cleaning, laundry, cookingand a host of other activities. It's reallyunthinkable to stop using water, but we

can be smarter about the way we use it.Here are some ways you can keep greenand save water.

Stop Leaks: Leaks are one of thecommon problems in your home watersystem. You can generate a significantamount of water loss with just a smallleak, and they are really easy to fix.Toilets can leak from the tank into thebowl, and these should be replaced assoon as possible. Much of what peopleare looking for from their water supply isactually water pressure to knock off dirtor grime. An aerator on your sinks willinfuse the water with air, giving you thepressure you want while using much lesswater.

Go Low-Flow: With the recent moveto sustainability, there are now low-flowdevices for just about everything in yourhome. Shower heads are often the biggestculprits. You can drastically reduce theamount of water in your shower, but thereare also low-flow devices for kitchen andbathroom sinks. If you are installing anew toilet, look into a low-flow model aswell. Of course, taking shorter showers isalso a great way to save water. A five-minute shower is usually enough for mostpeople each day. A timer on the shower,

or just a kitchen timer in the bathroom, can make you more aware of how muchtime you spend in the shower.

Opt for the Natural: Keeping a greenlawn is a sign of success for many. Youcan save a lot of water each summer, par-ticularly in arid regions, by letting yourlawn simply brown out each summer. Youcan also work to re-landscape your yardwith drought-resistant plants that will stillbe attractive with much less water use. Ifyou haven't heard of xeriscaping, the useof water-conserving techniques in aridlands, then it might be time to start doingsome research. If you can't go that far, then be sure to water your lawn in themorning and evening, which preventsevaporation. Watering in short bursts, 10-15 minutes, will give all of the water timeto soak in, so you won't be watching yourwater flow down into the street.

Harvest Your Rainwater: Rainwatercatchment systems are becoming moreand more popular. Instead of rainwaterrolling into the public sewer system, youcan keep it in large barrels. Then, as theseason dries out, you can use this harvest-ed water for your lawn, yard or garden, saving you money and reusing a resourcethat would have otherwise gone to waste.

Growing your first gardenGrowing a garden may seem like a

daunting task, but more and more peopleare doing it every year. It is a simple andrewarding way to reduce some of yourimpact on the environment.

Food is the most essential element tolife. In the modern world, it is also one ofthe biggest contributors to the degradationof the environment. Much food in theUnited States is grown far from where it'sconsumed and requires a lot of energy tobe distributed.

You don't need a ton of acreage to growyour own food. You just need a small yard,a deck or even a patio to put out yourplants. To start a garden, pick a site thatgets good sun. Usually, this means some-thing on the south side of your home thatisn't shaded by a large tree. All you need is

a little bit of dirt, and potted plants workgreat for those in apartments. If you havethe inclination, try a raised bed, whichhelps the soil stay warmer and drain better, giving you better growing conditions.

It's important to plant things that willgrow well in your area. Get familiar withthe zone you live in and what works wellthere.

The point of a home garden isn't to giveyourself another job but to provide youwith a little food for your effort. With timeand practice, you can have exactly that-acornucopia of fruits, vegetables and herbsthat come straight out of your home. Whileyou probably won't completely change thefood system, you can make a small contri-bution by growing some of your ownfood.

Traditions can bring a senseof special identity to familiesBy Donna Erickson

"I've just set the timer for 18 minutes,"said Karen Helfand to her 9-year-olddaughter, Rachel, and Rachel's friendClaire. That was the cue for the girls todump and pour the measured flour andwater on the counter and mix the simpledough with their hands to make matzo forPassover earlier this spring. They werelearning that it's all about "time" as theyprepared and baked the dough in haste --just as it was done by the Israelites thou-sands of years ago in the land of Egyptwhen they escaped slavery and fled forsafety in a hurry.

"We want our daughters to have aPassover Seder to remember," saidClaire's mom, Patty Diamond, programdirector of Mayim Rabim Congregationin Minneapolis. "When extended familiesgather around their tables and the platewith the horseradish (representing the bit-terness of slavery) is served with matzo, the children will connect personally hav-ing measured, mixed and manipulated theunleavened dough themselves. Passoveris our tradition, and we pass it on to ourdaughters, just as our mothers did for us."

Traditions, whether religious or other-wise, can bring a sense of special identityto family life. And the good news is thatjust about anything your family enjoysdoing together can become a special ritu-al that keeps you close. And those ritualswill no doubt have a few simple things incommon: They are easy to do, you sharethem with your children, and they giveyou a "we." "In our family 'we' always gofishing on Father's Day, or 'we' alwaysmake sandcastles and a bonfire at thebeach on the Fourth of July." You mightthink of traditions as a mosaic of yourfamily's soul. They say who you are, where you are and where you come from.

Encase special life events and startcalling them your own this spring and

summer. These traditions bear repetitionnot only because they are fun, but alsobecause you rekindle the wonder of rela-tionships and family by doing them againand again.

As you fill your family calendar withkids' camps, gardening, ballgames, out-ings and vacations, think about how youcan make a trip or activity a special tradi-tion, a "we" event that defines who youare. Remember, a family tradition doesn'thave to cost a lot of money or be elabo-rate. In fact, it's the simple and silly ideasthat are often treasured most. Pass themalong from year to year and watch yourfamily story become a living gift to yourchildren.

Try these tipsMany people have sent in the tip to

use two bowls, one larger than the other,to serve cold salads at picnics. You add afew cups of crushed ice to the largerbowl, then nestle the smaller bowl into it,making it "chilled." In any case, remem-ber: Don't leave food out longer than twohours.

If you're planning food platters foryour barbecue, consider making severalsmaller platters instead of one large dish. The large ones are harder to store whenyou prep beforehand, but a better reasonis that the items will not go stale/toowarm/too cold quite as fast, and it's easyto switch out plates throughout the party.
