2
It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, while the sun’s light failed and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Having said this, he breathed his last. When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, “Certainly this man was
innocent.” And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. Luke 23:44-49
I have heard these words about Jesus’ death
year after year. You have heard these words
year after year. Christians around the world
have heard these words year after year. This
year they sound different.
It is not unusual for me to write newsletter
articles at my kitchen table. It is the first time in
my life that I have written a newsletter article at
my kitchen table after livestreaming worship on
a Sunday morning with fewer than 10 people in
a sanctuary that can hold more than 350.
“All the crowds who had gathered…
returned home…” The Bible is talking about the
Friday when Jesus was crucified. The crowds
had seen Jesus die. It was all over. They went
home, not quite knowing what to think.
“But all his acquaintances, including the
women who had followed him from Galilee, stood
at a distance, watching these things.” The women
weren’t standing at a distance as part of a
worldwide attempt to slow the spread of an
infectious disease. The women were standing at
a distance, because they had just seen Jesus
betrayed, arrested, and killed. Standing at a
distance gave them a sense of safety when they
were uncertain about what might happen next.
“The sun’s light failed and the curtain of
the temple was torn in two.” Nothing was as it
should be. Everything felt like it had been torn apart.
But that’s where what I think the Bible
says and what God is doing in the world reveal
something different than what I expecting.
Usually, I want to avoid tearing things apart.
But I’ve heard through years of study that the
curtain of the temple was intended to separate
the holiness of God from the ordinariness of the
people. So this tearing apart is more of an
opening that Jesus’ death makes to connect God
and people. Through Jesus’ death, people are
no longer separated from God. God restores
the relationship with people in the death and
resurrection of Jesus.
So I can’t stop reading the Bible at this
point with the crowds returning home and the
women standing at a distance. I can’t stop
reading when the stone is rolled in front of the
tomb. I can’t stop reading when the stone is
sealed to keep anyone from entering. I won’t
stop reading because I believe that God opens
the tomb and Jesus has been raised from the
dead.
No matter how long the time of distancing
feels, no matter how sealed the tomb appears
to be, the resurrection is God’s response to
distance and death. Jesus meets the women
who dared to return to the tomb on Easter
Sunday morning [Matthew 28:1-10.] Jesus
meets the ones walking on the road to Emmaus.
[Luke 24:13-35.] The risen Christ comes to the
disciples afraid and locked in a room and says,
“Peace be with you.” [John 20:19-31.]
As I sit at my kitchen table and write a
newsletter article on March 22, I do not know on
what day I will be able to proclaim the good
news of the risen Christ to a room filled with
people gathering together. But I am certain
that the risen Christ will find us where we are
and bring peace to all the places where we lock
ourselves away in fear. I am certain that God
will open tombs and bridge distances. With
Paul, who wrote to the Christians in Rome
[Romans 8:38-39] , I am certain that “nothing
will be able to separate us from the love of God
in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Amen
In Peace,
Pastor Kristi Weber

Quilting Update With utmost regret and abundant caution, Trinity’s quilters will suspend quilt tying sessions until the dangers of COVID-19 are past. The completed quilts will be displayed May 3 if worship services resume and be shipped
out the second week in May.
Thank you to all who helped cut and sew quilt tops and those who helped tie and sew them at church. To ensure productive quilt sessions when they can be resumed, fabric will continue to be cut into 10 ½ inch squares at home and assembled into quilt kits to be placed in the fellowship area for people to take home to sew into 60” X 80” quilt tops. DONATIONS OF LARGE PIECES OF FABRIC AND COLORED SHEETS CONTINUE TO BE NEEDED as 84” X 64” backings will be made at home as well.
Trinity Choir
"When in Our Music God Is
Glorified" is the opening phrase
of one of my favorite hymns. It
reminds us that music can lift
our hearts, strengthen our faith,
bring comfort and offer hope.
Music can be experienced not just in community,
but also in our hearts and minds. In these
difficult days ahead my prayer is that we find "a
new dimension in the world of sound" even when
alone so that at the end of each day we can truly
say and sing "Alleluia!" Dick Morris
Trinity Choir rehearsals and times to sing for
worship will be determined weekly by phone
messages.
Young at Heart will not meet again until the
COVID-19 danger is over. Maintaining contact
by phone, e-mail or letter is encouraged, with a
special request to make contact on our regular
meeting date April 13 at 2 p.m. Our planned
informational organ presentation by Dick Morris
will be re-scheduled.

Census 2020 is Important

and asking you to complete your census form. You may do so online, over the phone or using a
paper form. Please remember to do so, your participation is important. The federal government
disburses $675 billion in funding each year based on census population counts. This funding is
important to our community and the people we serve.
Take time to be counted.
If you have any questions or need assistance with your form, please contact Pastor Bob Boyar
of the United Presbyterian Church at 252-1748 or visit 2020census.gov

I know that these are uncertain and frustrating
times. My prayers and my heart are with you all,
as we experience this new (temporary) normal
together but separately. My hopes are that we
can be patient, considerate, and courageous. I
pray that we can stay connected to one another
and take care of each other, all the while being
safe and keeping our most vulnerable neighbors
safe. May peace and good health be with you all.
P.S. Please remember to wash your hands and
stop touching your face.¯\_(ツ)_/¯
PULSE (6th—9th grades)
We will continue to have PULSE, just not at
church together. I will be putting our lesson and
discussion materials together and Pastor Susan
will be sending them out via email at the same
time that she sends Faith Quest lessons. Our
topic continues to be Relationships. As we
worship digitally during this Lenten season and
as Holy Week draws near, we will concentrate on
our relationships with Jesus and why Lent and
Easter are such special times in the church and
for our faith lives.
Circus
The Circus has been cancelled this year.
Coffee Cart
Since we are currently not meeting in person at
church for spiritual development time and
worship, we will not need Coffee Cart hosts until
further notice. A huge THANK YOU to those
families that hosted in March and to the Girl
Scouts for their participation, as well. Thank you,
also, to those families that signed up to host but
didn't get the chance. I am so grateful to all of
you for all that you guys do!
Blessings and Love to you all!

Connect Share Grow Update
As of March 23, 2020, donations to the Connect Share Grow campaign and additional gifts for the
paving and drainage projects provided enough funds to accomplish the following:
Transfer $25,000 to pay the monthly mortgage payments through the end of the year!
Save $104,000 to use for the paving and drainage project.
The council will be able to move forward with approving the scope of work for the paving and drainage
projects in the near future. Even if the full project cannot be completed this summer, there is more
than enough funding available to move ahead with paving the North Parking Lot.
