PrOfESSiOnAl OUtCOmES Urban planners are in great demand in the public, private and community sectors in Australia and overseas. State and local government opportunities are strong in several areas including integrated transport planning, affordable housing strategy development, regional planning and various aspects of urban design. In the private sector, planning and urban design consultancies value professionals with the strong analytical, place design and negotiation skills developed in the program. Extensive opportunities also exist in property development and community organisations.

PrOfESSiOnAl rECOgnitiOn The combined Bachelor of Urban Design and Planning and the Master of Urban Planning have interim accreditation by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA). International accreditation for this degree has also been achieved with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

I chose to study my Masters of Urban Planning at Bond University as it provided an accelerated course within a School that was heavily focussed on Sustainable Development initiatives.

After studying my undergraduate degree at a larger university I was impressed by the intimate yet challenging class room experience that Bond provides. With smaller classes and industry experienced staff the classroom has a practical and engaging feel where students readily develop into leaders of the built environment.

During semesters 3 - 7, the Scientific Basis of Medicine theme includes physiology, anatomy, pathology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, bio-informatics and diagnostic investigations (including imaging). All body systems are covered in depth with extensive use of problem-based learning (PBL). Evidence-based practice and training in research methodology are major streams of the Health and Society theme, together with health promotion and illness prevention in populations/communities. Throughout the course, students undergo extensive training in clinical and communication skills to ensure students can communicate clearly with patients. For the second half of the program (semesters 8 - 15), students are primarily located in hospitals where they undertake several clinical rotations, including medicine, surgery, paediatrics and general practice. During Year 4 there is an elective term which students can spend at any approved health care setting in Australia or overseas. Final year students complete pre-internship training which aims to orientate them to the hospital environment prior to commencing their intern year.

“I came to Bond from Scotland at the beginning of 2003. It goes without saying that the Australian lifestyle is a major attraction for many international students and I was (and remain) no exception to that rule, but from a professional perspective I also wanted to be able return to the UK with recognised qualifications and a genuine international awareness that I could sell to potential employers. Bond stood out as the best option on all counts. The size and diversity of the international community at Bond is outstanding, and because most of us are so far from home, interaction becomes all the more important. I think I’ll always miss home, but in many ways, I’ve also never felt more at home.”
