Year 2012 in review

On behalf of the entire Alexander family at Bone Creek Ranch, I would like to welcome and thank all the buyers, bidders, friends and new acquaintances for all the help over the years. A big thanks to the Cowtown crew for a well run sale and all the consideration given to all who attend. O.B.I. (Rob Holowaychuk) and crew are very much appreciated and perform an invaluable part of our entire ranch operation. Rob has decades of experience in the seed stock industry. We don’t always agree but ultimately both O.B.I. and Bone Creek have contributed to making the offering what it is today. Rob also sources our herd bulls as he is everywhere. Not all the acquisitions are successful, but he is certainly batting well above average. Rob will give you a candid, honest assessment of the offering (talk to him). Joni is by far the most qualified of everyone to discuss the cow families. She will tell it to you straight! Mark Stock is again working ring and consulting on orders. Mark is fussy, specific, credible and honest to the point. New for this year is Ben Wright from Ontario who will be working ring and consulting. He will give our operation an access to more customers. As the offering grows in numbers, so must the contacts. Brent Weiss, Jim Wilson, and Wayne Bowyer will represent Cowtown for an unbiased assessment of the offering. They will also handle orders with the utmost privacy and discretion. The biggest thank you goes to Belinda Wagner of the Sask. Angus Association. She is the one most stressed getting the catalogue out on time and into peoples hands. She has to deal with everyone’s shortfalls and delays. I’m sure there is a big sigh of relief when bull sale season is over. Thanks from all of us!

The largest, most uniform and complete set of bulls that we have offered to date. As I walk through the bulls, I am very pleased with the depth of the offering. Lots of performance, maternal, and calving ease stand outs in both colors of purebreds and hybrids. Approximately 75% of the offering are from home raised sires and dams; the true test of the depth of the program.

our focus

As the cattle industry shifts and changes, what do we do as producers? Well, we have never changed. Our focus is still on cows that calve on their own, and require little, if any attention. If they need help, they are gone, Simple! Eliminate the problems and your life will be simpler and ranching will be fun. We stress cows with good udders that raise above average calves with as much performance as possible while not sacrificing the maternal ability for our cows to survive. I am a believer of EPD’s and carcass evaluation, but presently the system is not reliable or consistent enough for me to put my rubber stamp of approval on them. We have decades of performance and carcass data on our production. These are not pre-selected individuals, but rather real numbers from complete pens of Bone Creek raised cattle. Everyone has great individuals, but it is average that counts. People will always talk about the great ones. It takes all of your production to affect the bottom line, not just the great ones. It’s not what the calves

brought; it’s the average of all of the cattle. We are fortunate to stay connected to Gateway Livestock (Taber) (Les and Jeff Smith) for 25 years and as a result, decades of data. Every feeder animal we have raised, with the exception of 3 loads of steers going to Toronto to a specialty market, have been handled by Gateway. This has allowed us some invaluable information to chart our course. We are constantly scrutinizing our cattle and program for both our benefit as well as yours. Your success is ultimately our success. We are always asked about performance and carcass evaluations. In 2012, our yearling steers off grass were sorted into 2 weight breaks. The lighter steers were mixed with other producers cattle in the feedlot, therefore the information is on pen average (the numbers may not be accurate). The heavy 3 loads of steers went into their own pen and the data was compiled on themselves. 201 steers went on feed, average daily gain of 4.6 pounds/head/day. Outgoing weight of 1584 lbs. 92.54% choice (AAA), 6.97% select (AA), 1 animal No Roll (single A). The really great part is 86.07% Y1 & Y2 with only one Y4 (over fat), coupled with 61.14% yield. These numbers are real numbers from Washington Beef. Ultimately, carcass data is only credible when the animal is on the hook. This is what Bone Creek cattle do in the real world. These bulls offered today should be no exception.

The outlook

Cloudy at present, but extremely bright and long lasting. Because of the 2012 drought in the U.S. above average numbers of cattle have been put into finishing lots earlier than normal. Add to that, record high grain prices and boom, big losses in fed cattle, which has put pressure on the present feeder market. Consumers are cautious, causing meat supplies to back up the chain. But the reality is the cow numbers in the U.S. have dropped from approximately 34 million to 30 million head in 2012. Considering there are only about 4 million beef cows in Canada, this drop in numbers is beyond imaginable. The grain farmers are not going back into cows and the guys left are thick skinned, grizzly faced, and hear to stay. Congrats! We know two things for sure. We will get through the present back log of fed cattle and there are significantly less feeders behind this backlog. We also know it will rain (U.S. Midwest is seeing significant improved moisture conditions) and farmers are notorious about over producing. Give the grain guys incentive and they will grow piles of grain everywhere. Thus, lower feed grains, lower cost of gain, lower supplies of feeders, stable fed cattle prices as numbers are low, and Wow! As a result, clear blue sky! If I’m wrong, I’ll go into hiding!

Gratification is when home raised sires produce like 8067. 8067 progeny are framey, but thick. Loose hided, wide based and thick topped. Stand behind the 8067`s, they all have meat through their stifle joint. 8067 progeny are very typical, meaning when you recognize their type, they are all the same. Every sire throws some good ones, but 8067 progeny are as consistent in type as any bull used in our program. 8067 all have performance, muscle mass, structural correctness coupled with eye appeal, while not pushing birth weight to higher levels. 8067 is a worthy herd sire to add his progeny to any program.

I’ve seen a few Red Kodiak`s but none that compare to 1039Y. 1039Y has a big top and carries his muscle mass down through his stifle joint right to his hook. 1039Y is a Red Kodiak that I feel will walk with his Black 1/2 brothers. Dam: 9146 is square uddered with nice teat structure. She will grow up to be a big cow considering her Dam 881. The maternal grand dam goes back to Current Value who was probably as good a female producer as there is. 1039Y is a worthy addition to any program.

Sired by a home raised bull. The 8146 progeny are stout, muscled up cattle with moderate frame size. Both off 1st calf heifers. Good first effort. Note the consistency of the 8146 progeny. Like peas in a pod.

The more I study 1260, the more I feel he could be Lot 1 in any sale. 1260 is near flawless. Consider the female side. 4169 is a Rambo daughter (possibly every cow in our herd goes back to Rambo 17A). 892 sires flawless daughters (Ask Rob Holowaychuk about the 892 daughters) 4169 is perfect uddered, perfect footed with built in longevity. 240 (herself) produced calves until she was 17 years old. Her bag and feet were still perfect (produced an average calf) but came up dry at 17 years of age. 240 daughters are worthy to build a program around. 240 goes back to Tokun 113X who sired daughters that produced and lasted. We still AI back to 113X to produce females.
