Cucho was a very curious shark. He liked to swim around and tell stories of what he had seen. His teacher asked him: “Cucho, do you want to be a reporter and tell the news?” He smiled and showed his big teeth. He said: “Yes, but where do I go first?” …Cucho era un tiburón muy curioso. Le gustaba nadar y contar historias de lo que había visto. Su maestra le preguntó: “Cucho, ¿quieres ser reportero y dar las noticias?” Él sonrió y mostró sus dientes grandotes. Dijo: “Si, pero ¿por dónde comienzo?” 3

It was then that Cucho heard something from far, far away. He went to explore, and found an oyster. “Ay, ay, ay” said the oyster. “What happened?” asked Cucho. “I lost my pearl! I had a pearl with me, and took a nap. When I woke up, the pearl was gone!” the oyster said. Cucho knew he had his first story. …Fue entonces que Cucho oyó algo lejos, muy lejos. Fue a explorar, y encontró una ostra. “Ay, ay, ay” dijo la ostra. “¿Qué pasó?” preguntó Cucho. “¡Perdí mi perla! La tenía conmigo, y dormí una siesta. Cuando desperté, la perla ya no estaba!” dijo la ostra. Cucho supo que ya tenía su primera historia.

Cucho was asking many questions, as reporters do, and the oyster asked him: “Why don’t you help me find my pearl, instead of talking so much?” Cucho said: “Sure!”As a shark, Cucho had an extraordinary sense of smell. “I think your pearl went that way, I’ll look for it!” he told the oyster. “Oh, thank you!” she said. But Cucho had already swam away. …Cucho hacía muchas preguntas, como los reporteros, y la ostra le preguntó: “¿Porqué no me ayudas a encontrar mi perla, en vez de hablar tanto?” Cucho respondió: “¡Claro!” Al ser un tiburón, Cucho tenía un extraordinario sentido del olfato. “¡Creo que tu perla se fue por allá, la voy a buscar!” le dijo a la ostra. “Oh, gracias!” contestó ella. Pero Cucho ya se había ido. 5

Cucho was swimming very fast, searching for the pearl. But something caught his attention. It was a shoe, at the bottom of the sea. Then, a long arm grabbed it. And he saw another arm, and another, and another… Eight arms! They all belonged to a happy octopus. …Cucho nadaba muy rápido, buscando la perla. Pero algo le llamó la atención. Era un zapato, en el fondo del mar. Entonces, un largo brazo lo agarró. Y vió otro brazo, y otro, y otro… ¡Ocho brazos! Todos pertenecían a un pulpo feliz.

The octopus put the shoe on, and started dancing. “I only had seven shoes, and now I found the last shoe I needed. All my tentacles have shoes on!” he said, moving with rhythm. “Are you also looking for shoes?” the octopus asked Cucho. “No, but I’m looking for a pearl” Cucho replied. …El pulpo se puso el zapato, y comenzó a bailar. “Solo tenía siete zapatos, y ahora encontré el que me faltaba. Todos mis tentáculos tienen zapatos” dijo, moviéndose con ritmo. “¿También buscas zapatos?” el pulpo le preguntó al tiburón. “No, pero estoy buscando una perla” respondió Cucho. 7

“Are you a detective?” asked the octopus. “No, I am a reporter” said Cucho. “Oh, then you could report on that dolphin over there. He is saving a puppy that fell from a boat, hurry up!” the octopus exclaimed, still dancing, and pointing with his new shoe towards lots of bubbles. …“¿Eres un detective?” preguntó el pulpo. “No, soy un reportero” dijo Cucho. “Oh, entonces podrías reportar sobre ese delfín que está allá. Él está salvando a un cachorro que cayó de un bote, ¡apúrate!” exclamó el pulpo, mientras seguía bailando, y señalaba con su zapato nuevo hacia un montón de burbujas.

Cucho was so amazed! A dolphin had pushed a small dog up to the surface. In a boat, a woman was pulling the puppy out of the water. “Ponchito, come here!” she kept saying. Ponchito was barking, thanking the good dolphin for rescuing him. “That’s news!” Cucho said. …¡Cucho estaba tan impresionado! Un delfín había empujado a un perrito hacia la superficie. En el bote, una mujer sacaba al cachorro del agua. “¡Ponchito, ven aquí!” decía ella. Ponchito estaba ladrando, agradeciendo al buen delfín que lo rescató. “¡Eso es una noticia!” dijo Cucho. 9

“How did you see the dog?” Cucho asked the dolphin. “With my eyes” she replied, laughing. She explained: “I was looking at something bright in the sand, I heard the splash, and saw Ponchito in the water. He needed help and I helped him!... Oh, here’s what I had been looking at…” said the dolphin. “What is it?” Cucho asked. …“¿Cómo viste al perro?” preguntó Cucho al delfín. “Con mis ojos” le respondió, riéndose. Explicó: “Estaba mirando algo brillante en la arena, y escuché el chapuzón, y ví a Ponchito en el agua. ¡Él necesitaba ayuda y lo ayudé!... Oh, aquí está lo que había estado mirando…” dijo el delfín. “¿Qué es?” preguntó Cucho.

It was tiny and beautiful. Cucho yelled: “It’s the pearl! The missing pearl! Thank you dolphin, you did great things today!” “You are welcome” said the dolphin. Cucho gave the pearl to the oyster, and the octopus brought his music. They all danced to the rhythm of the marine currents, and celebrated the good news. A day in the life of Cucho, the Shark Reporter. …Era pequeña y hermosa. Cucho gritó: “¡Es la perla! ¡La perla perdida! ¡Gracias delfín, hoy hiciste cosas grandiosas!” “Con gusto” dijo el delfín. Cucho le dió la perla a la ostra, y el pulpo trajo su música. Todos bailaron al ritmo de las corrientes marinas, y celebraron las buenas noticias. Un día en la vida de Cucho, el Tiburón Reportero. 11
