Dr. Eddy Clifford Jerman President Emeritus, ASXT
November 21, 1865 – September 13, 1936
Dr. Jerman is recognized as “The Father of Radiography” in the
United States because of his early teaching of radiography beginning in
1897 and the founding of the American Association of Radiological
Technicians now known as the ASRT.
In 1928 Dr. Jerman published “Modern X-Ray Technic” in which
He said, “The technician who does his work by the “hunch” method can
never successfully compete with one who having mastered the
fundamentals is enabled to develop a proper procedure and put into the
film any quality that may be desired.”
After the death of Dr. Jerman in 1936 his name was placed among
the martyrs of the Roentgen Rays.

addition of the ten Regional Directors would give
representation to the regions. Directors would serve a three

who have made outstanding contributions to the profession
and to the American Society of Radiologic Technologist. This
category was initiated within the ASRT to honor members who
were dedicated to the organization and contributed unselfishly
to the profession. Each Fellow has committed to the

COUNSELORS
OF THE
AMERICAN SOCIETY OF X-RAY TECHNICIAN
FROM
THE NORTH CAROLINA SOCIETY OF X-RAY
TECHNICIANS
1944 - 1986
14
INTRODUCTION
“The President, with the approval of the Executive
Committee, shall in harmony with the Constitution and By-
laws for Affiliated Societies, appoint Counselors to serve in the
area where they reside. It shall be the duties of the Counselors
to encourage and assist in fostering such movements as will be
of general interest and benefit to x-ray technicians.
They shall, in cooperation with the Affiliation Committee,
act as official representatives of the Society in advising and
assisting x-ray technicians and organizations within their
districts. They shall cooperate with the American Registry of
X-Ray Technicians. Their appointments shall be sine die, and
may be terminated at the discretion of the President.”

“1946 At the June meeting (of the ARXT) the Board passed a
resolution to amend the Bylaws to require that applications for
examination to be signed by the applicant’s employer, the
radiological supervisor, and by the counselor appointed by the
ASXT in the state from which the application originated.
Previously, applications had to be signed by four references:
employer (medical supervisor), radiologist in charge of the
department and two other radiologists”. (Terms were for one
year starting in the spring.) Source: Jack W. Hanson, History of the American Registry of

In 1966 the Registry would not accept any application for
examination unless the applicant had completed a 24 month
course approved by the AMA. A new application was
introduced providing space for both the supervising
technologist and radiologist director to certify to the
applicant’s completion of the accredited program. The
applicant no longer had to provide proof of a high school
graduation or the program director to complete a reference
form.

Radiologic Technologists. Hollbrook & Associates 1996.
16
It had been the duty of the Counselor to complete the reference
form to put with the application for the ARRT. I believe it
was then that the position of Counselor was phased out. From
this point forward Counselors were probably redirected to
assist in Continuing Education.

*Jean Ingles Widger, BS, RT 1914 – 1980
Editor of “The X-Ray Technician”
& “Radiologic Technology”
1956 – 1980
“The death of Jean I. Widger has left a great emptiness in the
Radiologic Technology profession. For twenty-five years, Ms. Widger, a
woman of warmth and wit, intelligence and integrity, dedicated herself to
the growth of our profession, and as editor of our professional journal,
provided an inspiration with her cogent and comprehensive editorials.
The silent majority often called her their best friend—the person who
listened, understood, spoke for, laughed with, loved life with, and stood for
them. A true lady was she. One who added warm class to every situation in
which she participated.
We shall miss her but her legacy of professional excellence will live
forever as a lasting tribute to this beloved woman.”
