Hey, I’m Jules Faber and I’m an illustrator who just loves to read! I taught myself how to read at the age of four as a means to escape my big, noisy family (there are eight kids!). I loved all sorts of books growing up but one of my absolute favourites was Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak (I could totally relate to being a small guy wanting to control the big, lumbering beasts that surrounded me). As I got older I loved reading classic adventures like The War of the Worlds and The Time Machine by H G Wells, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson and Moby Dick by Herman Melville. I read heaps of comics too and loved imagining myself sharing The Phantom’s adventures or living in the futuristic Mega-City 1 with Judge Dredd. I also read Archie comics, and in my teen years a really cool comic called Grendel by Matt Wagner, which had incredible artwork. I think that was one of the influences that made me create my own comics years later. From comics I went on to draw all sorts of different things for people, including cartoons for newspapers, comic strips, cartoon pictures of people at big events and for a while I even drew for an animated program for Disney. All of that drawing prepared me to work in books and that’s mostly what I do today. You may have read some of the books I’ve illustrated. They include Anh Do’s WeirDo series, David Warner’s Kaboom Kid series and the Stinky Street Stories series with Alex Ratt, among many others. Every book is different and is fun in its own way to draw. Because I draw cartoons so much, I joined the Australian Cartoonists’ Association and I’m currently serving my fourth term as President, which is fun. It’s a great group. We learn a lot from other more experienced cartoonists about all the less fun parts of the job (like tax and stuff) but also how to improve our work. I still read every day, even when I’m really busy drawing pictures for books. I read everything from science fiction to short stories to the classics I loved growing up. Graphic novels and comics are still probably my favourite things to read and I always have a good-sized pile waiting for me when I finish whatever I’m reading right now. Not having something to read next is the worst! Reading helped make me what I am today and I’d be totally lost without it!

OVER 2 MILLION BOOKS-OF-CHOICE

DISTRIBUTED AROUND AUSTRALIA!

Hey, I’m Jules Faber and I’m an illustrator who just loves to read!I taught myself how to read at the age of four as a means to escape my big, noisy family (there are eight kids!). I loved all sorts of books growing up but one of my absolute favourites was Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak (I could totally relate to being a small guy wanting to control the big, lumbering beasts that surrounded me).

As I got older I loved reading classic adventures like The War of the Worlds and The Time Machine by H G Wells, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson and Moby Dick by Herman

Melville. I read heaps of comics too and loved imagining myself sharing The Phantom’s adventures or living in the futuristic Mega-City 1 with Judge Dredd. I also read

Archie comics, and in my teen years a really cool comic called Grendel by Matt Wagner, which had incredible artwork. I think that was one of the influences that made me create my own comics years later.

From comics I went on to draw all sorts of different things for people, including cartoons for newspapers, comic strips, cartoon pictures of people at big events and for a while I even drew for

an animated program for Disney.

All of that drawing prepared me to work in books and that’s mostly what I do today. You may have read some of the books I’ve illustrated. They include Anh Do’s WeirDo series, David Warner’s Kaboom Kid series and the Stinky Street

Stories series with Alex Ratt, among many others. Every book is different and is fun in its own way to draw.

Because I draw cartoons so much, I joined the Australian Cartoonists’ Association and I’m currently serving my fourth term

as President, which is fun. It’s a great group. We learn a lot from other more experienced cartoonists about all the less fun parts of the

job (like tax and stuff) but also how to improve our work.

I still read every day, even when I’m really busy drawing pictures for books. I read everything from science fiction to short stories to the classics I loved

growing up. Graphic novels and comics are still probably my favourite things to read and I always have a good-sized pile waiting for me when I finish whatever

I’m reading right now. Not having something to read next is the worst!

Reading helped make me what I am today and I’d be totally lost without it!
