Webb Freegy had a great life with everything going his way. He was getting great grades in school, he was the fastest person on the track team, and he was about to get his driver’s license. One day while getting a ride home from his grandfather, everything goes wrong. When Webb wakes up in a hospital bed, his leg is broken, his grandfather is being questioned by the police and there is a little girl in a coma. All Webb can remember is his grandfather’s words, “You’re fifteen years old…You’ll never get a license with this on your record…Just let me take care of everything.” Was Webb’s grandfather willing to go to jail to save his grandson? And who was driving the car that day? This was a very interesting book to anyone who enjoys mystery and suspense.

thE tIME MAChINEWells, H.G. 118 p.

The Time Machine written by H.G. Wells is a book about a scientist who has been doing research into time and space. We never find out what his name is but he is eerily referred to as the Time Traveler. Once his machine is finally completed, he goes through time and finally ends up in the year 802,701 where he meets a group of rather strange people named Eloi. He falls in love with Weena, one of the Eloi. While spending time with her, his machine is stolen and he must get it back from the Morlocks, zombie like creatures who live underground. If you are into Sci-Fi and enjoy books that are different, you will fall in love with this classic tale.

Two boys go exploring. They find a lot of different animals. They learn to tell the difference between a frog and a toad. Toads have skin that is brown and lumpy and live anywhere near insects. Frogs have smooth skin and live near water. I like this book because I did not know the difference between frogs and toads until I read this book. The story had a nice ending too.

He is also afraid to hit a pitched ball ever since he was hit in the head by a ball. Jody had to try to overcome his fears. I like this book because I like to read about baseball and play it too. I recommend this book to anyone who believes in a challenge and never giving up.

Tinker Bell is a fairy who can also fly. One day Peter and Tink are on Skull Rock saving Tiger Lily the Indian Princess from Captain Hook. Tink gets captured by Captain Hook. Oh no, what is going to happen to Tink? I loved this book because it has so many great details and it had my favorite Disney character Tinker Bell.

COuNtERPLAySnyder, Anne and Pelletier, Louis. 166 p.

Brad, a new student at a California high school does not fit in right away even though he is immediately placed on the school football team as the starting quarterback. As time goes by, Brad became quite close with teammate Alex. Brad and Alex become best friends and undefeatable teammates. When the two best friends escape the world to talk about whom would get which girl, Alex is forced to tell Brad the truth that he is gay. Even though Brad thought not too much would change, it did, putting all characters in very difficult situations. I would recommend this book to any high school student. It keeps you on the edge of your chair with heavy anticipation. Find out what a guy does when he is straight and finds out that his best friend is not by reading Anne Synder’s novel. CounterPlay helps students understand how every student should be treated equally and that how a student is treated can determine the rest of that student’s or even another student’s life. I think that reading Anne Snyder’s novel will be helpful to the social life of any student.

DO yOu SEE WhAt I SEE?St. George, Judith. 157 p.

Matt Runyon is new to Cape Cod but cannot make new friends because he is infected with mononucleosis. He does not have much to do except walk Mrs. Shreve’s dog across the salt marsh. Throughout the novel, Matt watches the Vosserts at their rental home. He sees many mysterious things going on. He called in three reports to the police which turned out to be false alarms, but Matt knows what he saw even though no one will believe him. He sees Mr. Vossert watching him and knows that he is on to him. What is up with the Vosserts and what will Matt do to prove he is right? The whole book will really keep you thinking until the end. I had some moments where I was sitting on the edge of my seat and even frightened about what would happen next. Anyone from the age of 12 to 16 will find this a great and thrilling mystery book.

thE BOMBTaylor, Theodore. 161 p.

The island of Bikini Atoll is completely isolated from the rest of the world, even while World War II is going on around them. Everyday, Sorry Rimanu uses coconuts, pandanus, and fish to survive on Bikini Atoll. When the US Navy invades in order to test the atomic bomb, the villagers are forced to move. In order to keep the United States from testing the bomb on his homeland, Sorry must make the biggest decision of his life.I thought that the book was well written including the detail, storyline, and style that Theodore Taylor used. The book is an historical fiction book which was quite enjoyable for me to read. Because of these reasons, I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys suspense, excitement and who roots for the underdog.

Jason makes his life even more complicated and decides to send her a picture of his stepbrother. Will he be able to pull off being his brother or will he get caught as being an impostor? The humor used throughout the book will make you never want to put this book down. The book proved that one should always be true to themselves and there is no reason to change, through an amazing story of friendship, jealousy and family problems. I love how the plot is not a stereotypical love story, and allows the reader to get into Jason’s life. It is a good book for both girls and boys.

Cici is fourteen going on fifteen and expecting this summer to be the best one of her life. She would no longer be called a “little kid” at Crystal Lake where she has spent many summers. Cici had been hoping to catch the eye of her crush Jack Shurick. All of her dreams changed when she found out that the previous year, the year that she had not gone to the lake, the murder of Zoe Cyrek had occurred. Brody Shurik, Jack’s brother, had been put in jail for the crime. When Cici begins to snoop because she does not believe that Brody murdered Zoe, she becomes the murderer’s next target. I liked this book because it showed that snooping does not only lead to bad things, it could also lead to good things. I would recommend this book to anybody who likes mysteries. This book would be good for a person between the ages of thirteen and fifteen because they could relate to the main character. Twisted Summer sometimes dragged on but eventually got to the exciting parts. Overall, it was a very good book.

And after quitting the worst job in the world at Fast Burger, Brett decides to clean pools with his old pool cleaner. Alfie changes Brett for the better, but everything starts to fall apart again for him. Read more to see the life changing ending for Brett Gearson. This book is good in showing that money is not the only thing that keeps people alive and sometimes a little love can make a big difference. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in books that deal with drastic changes and forgiving. It is appropriate for teenagers between thirteen and sixteen.

Louis Camacho, Sparke, Grade 3.tuRNABOut ChILDRENMacCracken, Mary 252 p.

Mary MacCracken helps reveal the life and problems of a learning disabled child. She is a learning specialist helping many children with problems such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and poor auditory processing skills. Her “children” are able to grow and succeed using her learning methods, as well as prosper at home where it is typical to have failure. I would definitely recommend this book to any parent with a learning disabled child. I liked this book because it helped me understand how most dyslexic children as well as adults feel. As one of Mary’s students described, “We want to scream that we need help, but we’re too ‘fraid.” This book is a real page turner and is wonderful.

Franky’s deep inner self “Freaky Green Eyes” tries to break through her fake feelings. When her mother disappears, Franky and her younger sister face many life questions. Franky and her sister believe what their father tells them because of subconscious fear. Joyce Carol Oates wrote this book beautifully. The pace of the story is perfect and the book is enjoyable to read. The story is touching and any teenager could relate to Franky from some part of their experience. I recommend this book to people who think they are experiencing a violent relationship within their family. This book exposes the basic signs of an abusive parent.

I just read a great book! A boy named Gregory did not like being the smallest in his family. One evening during dinner, Gregory turned into a dinosaur called G-Rex and said he would eat his big brother if he did not get more meat to eat. What happens if his family runs out of meat? My favorite part of the story is when the people at Pot Roast Palace start flinging pot roasts at G-Rex. If you want to know what happens next, you should read this book.

Justin and his friends want to be on a show called The Slime Wars and win prizes. The problem is they have to make an alliance with the enemy, the girls on Daleside Street. This book is about a boy growing up in a Kenyan village. The boy has to take his grandfather’s cows out to the pasture. He takes them there but he leaves them. The boy gets distracted by many things and keeps forgetting about his grandfather’s cows because he is having so much fun. I liked this book because it teaches us a lesson about responsibility. You will have to read the book to see what happens next.

SOLDIER BOySHughes, Dean. 230 p.

Soldier Boys is about two boys who lived during World War II and who were both very patriotic to their countries. Both of them wanted to fight in the World War. Spence was an American and Dieter was a German. Spence was fifteen when his older brother Robert went to war. That is when he first became interested in the war. His biggest fear at the time was not making it into the war in time, but when he got there, he had bigger fears than that. The scariest thing of all was death. The sight of all the blood and seeing his comrades die was bad. Dieter was Hitler obsessed. He would do anything for him. At the young age of fifteen, he went to fight for Germany, but it was nothing like he had expected. Corporal Schaefer looked after him, but Schaefer did not like Germany that much. He knew after a tragic incident what Hitler was really doing to the Jewish people and did not want to fight for Germany but he had to. The constant death around Dieter was a terrible sight. If you like an action-packed book, this is the book for you. Remember it is a war book, so if you cannot handle blood, the thought of death and other kinds of graphic details, do not read this book. If you do not mind those things, then this will be a terrific book for you to read.

Running Man is set in the future around the 2020s’ in America. Ben Richards needs money to help treat his one and a half year old son’s bronchitis. To make this money, Ben enters a game show called The Running Man. On this game show, contestants must dodge hunters and other obstacles for thirty days without dying. No one has ever won before because of unfair and dirty tactics by the show’s host. To make sure contestants like Ben do not win this game, the creators of the show would add unfair obstacles such as polluting the air and controlling the police department. Ben experiences many tough obstacles throughout this book and many life threatening situations. He meets many people along his journey that help him hide and protect him throughout the thirty days. Will Ben survive the test and win the money to save his child? You must read this exciting and compelling story to find out. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good adventure story and to anyone who likes constant action and suspense. This book will surely keep you on the edge of your seat throughout its entirety.

VERy fAR AWAy fROM ANyWhERE ELSELeGuin, Ursula K. 87 p.

If you like books that are happy and everything goes the way the character wants then this book is not the book for you. Very Far Away From Anywhere Else is about two unique people who struggle with the problems of being seventeen. They mostly struggle with fitting in with other people, that is what attracts them to each other. This book is very inspiring to someone who is an “outsider.” It shows you can be yourself and you do not have to follow the “in crowd” to be happy. This book is well written with detail, and has a great moral.

Hoot was not only an exciting mystery but also a way to show kids that doing the right thing can sometimes be hard to do. In this book, the new kid Roy becomes friends with Mullet Fingers and Beatrice, the two people nobody would ever expect he would be friends with. Beatrice is the toughest girl in school and Mullet Fingers is a vandalizer, but all of his vandalizing is what is keeping Mother Paula’s Pancake House from being built in a deserted construction site. However, it is not really deserted, there are little owls that live in that area and Roy, Beatrice and Mullet Fingers are the only ones who know. By trying to keep the owls alive, they are put into some tough situations and have to go to the extreme. If you want to know if the three friends save the owls or not, then you should read Hoot.

Liv loves both her grandmother and the city of New York dearly. Liv’s mother died at her birth and her father left shortly after. The horrible event that took place in the beginning of the book forced Liv to move to California with her father. Her father’s girlfriend Sam, Liv and Liv’s father try to make the difficult adjustment of living together. Mark, Liv’s father, dives for a living. He does not talk very often, but Liv soon discovers that he is admired among his fellow divers. Liv feels that her father has saved his kindness for everyone other than her. When Brian, her father’s tender (a person who is responsible for a diver’s lifeline when the diver is underwater) breaks his arm, Mark asks Liv to take over the job. Working with her father, Liv discovers that love can sometimes be silent. I personally enjoyed reading this book, due to the details that made me feel like I was one of the main characters. There were many exciting parts in the book. Tender is a brilliantly written book that can capture someone’s mind within seconds. Teenagers can relate very well to Liv’s feelings and rebelliousness and therefore, is recommended for teens of all ages.

MS. LAgRANgE IS StRANgEGutman, Dan. 112p.

This book is about a lunch lady, who gets fired and is replaced by a French woman named Ms. LaGrange. She cooks food differently than the children are used to eating. She treated the lunch room like a fancy restaurant. She was much nicer than the first lunch lady. She wrote a secret message, Y-A-W-Y-E, in her mashed potatoes. Read this book to find out what she meant. I recommend this book to people who enjoy reading funny stories.

They called him beast because he had pointed teeth. He wanted to win a banner for his class, but his class had to be good for a week. I read an excellent book about wilderness search dogs. This book has a bunch of stories about dogs that search for people in trouble. My favorite rescue was about saving a boy lost in the forest. Another exciting rescue was about a St. Bernard dog, who saved 42 people trapped on a mountain in Europe. On a scale of one to ten, I would rate this book a ten.

At the end of the summer when Tom and Judy are found dead, their secretive government jobs spark everyones interest. As Detective Corey works on the case, he discovers that everyone they knew is a suspect. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery with a lot of twists and turns. This book was amazing, and showed Demille’s creativity and ability to the full extent.

Isabelle Lee is an eighth grader whose life took a turn for the worse. Her father had recently died and no one in her family, especially her mother, will speak of him. Isabelle thought nothing could be worse until her so-called charming sister had told their mother that she had an eating disorder. With this, Isabelle Lee’s mother sends her to an “Eating Disorder and Body Image Therapy Group.” Trapped in a room with strangers, Isabelle is amazed to see the most popular girl in school walk in. This book is very good and informative for young teens. Although the world today revolves a lot about appearance, that does not mean taking harmful roads to fit in with everyone else. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a fun, yet helpful girly book.

Heroes is a historical novel set in Frenchtown, Massachusetts after World War II. The protagonist Francis has just returned from the war. He lost his face in combat and was awarded a Silver Star for his bravery. He entered the war after contemplating suicide when his girlfriend Nicole was raped. Francis was determined to kill Larry LaSalle, the man who raped Nicole. Much of the book is Francis looking for Larry throughout the town. The story also has many periods of Francis reminiscing about past events. Heroes is targeted at people who enjoy history as some of Francis’ flashbacks are set in wartime. I personally found Heroes interesting because of the many flashbacks that Cormier included. He also did not release many details about Larry which caused much thought about him. Overall, Heroes is a novel that is recommended to those who enjoy suspense and especially those who have an interest in the military.

He acknowledges Gus’ amateur detective skills and is impressed by them. He enlists Gus’ help in solving the case even after Nick objects to it. The vocabulary was on my level and I would recommend this book to anybody from ages 12 to 15. I liked the book because it was a mystery. I enjoy reading suspenseful books and I had to resist putting the book down. Desert Blood 10PM/9C would be great for a reader who is interested in mystery books.

thEy CAgE thE ANIMALS At NIghtBurch, Jennings Michael. 293 p.

They Cage the Animals at Night is based on the true story of Jennings Michael Burch. Throughout Jennings’ childhood, he moved from orphanage to orphanage due to the troubles and the sickness of his mother. When Jennings went to orphanages, they punished kids very harshly. This meant that Jennings had many injuries. There was no one for him to talk to until the day he got a stuffed animal from one of the nicer nuns from one of the orphanages. He talked to “Doggie” whenever he needed him the most. He also had another friend from the orphanages named Mark. They were like brothers. But there was an unspoken “rule” and it was to “never make friends” because if you become friends with another, you never know, they just might go away and your heart will be broken. Jennings and Mark did not care about that rule and they were friends anyway. Does Jennings ever get to stay home for good and does his childhood go back to normal? If you want to find out the answers, read this book. This book was excellent and one of my favorites. If you want to read a book that will make you realize the importance of friends and family, I know this book is for you. Aidan Meehan, 9th grade

Maddie and her mom live in a motel called “Mrs. Hawkins’s Mansion-by-the-Sea” where she meets people who tell her stories involving the war and who make her worry about her dad and the many others who face the horrors of war on a daily basis. Pick up this book to find out what the war was like in the young people’s eyes. I liked this book because it kept me on my toes. I never knew what was coming up next in this book. It inspires me to believe that young people’s efforts can really make a difference.

Jedediah Barstow was traveling on the Kaw River to Oregon with his family. As they were crossing, it started to thunder and rain heavily. The river tore through their wagon and Ma, Pa and his sister Sally drowned. He now had to live his life as an orphan. Jedediah stayed on the Henshaw’s wagon after the accident, but he had to earn his way by gathering food, cleaning, packing and unpacking the wagons. He was taught to repair the wagons when they broke down and learned how to carve up the animals for meals. A few nights he stood watch over the camp to make sure their camp was safe. He was able to help catch an Indian who wanted to steal from the camp. He also helped the men turn the buffalo stampede before they got trampled and also fought off a bear by swinging at it with his Pa’s rifle. He became a hero when he saved a boy’s life who was bitten by a rattlesnake. Does Jedediah make it safely through the Oregon Trail like his family planned or does he stay an orphan forever? I enjoyed this book because it showed that someone can overcome their fears when they need to and it made me curious to see what would happen at the end of the story.
