Nigeria The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie This is a collection of short stories. In one of them, a Nigerian female writer called Ujunwa attends a workshop by a British magazine editor. He makes sexist comments to women in the workshop and tells her her stories are silly because women in Nigeria have rights. Ujunwa is upset. "[W]hy do we say nothing? Why do we always say nothing?” Ngozi Adichie has also written an essay called “We Should All be Feminists”, which C1 students have read this year. Iran Things We Left Unsaid by Zoya Pirzad This is Pirzad’s first novel. Her fans love her because she writes the way people talk. The story is about Irani women, women who make meals, raise children, and never stop wondering about what they could have been. India The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy Arundati Roy recreates a world where people are imprisoned in their role in a society in decay. Ayemenem, the toxic wasteland in southern India, it’s a world where cruel men lacking intelligence dominate and exploit women and children. Chile Maya's Notebook by Isabel Allende In Maya’s Notebook a young woman hides from her American enemies and addictions in a rural village on the coast of Chile. This book is about being an American woman and about being Chilean — in the United States, she was the victim of a youth-obsessed culture. In Chile she finds a place with a terrible past, but a place that is healing, and so a place to find hope. South Africa Beauty's Gift by Sindiwe Magona This is the story about a woman called Beauty. Before she dies of AIDS, she asks her friends to take care of themselves, and to do something. Her husband was promiscuous and they had unprotected sex. Beauty's plea is that the women find a way to protect themselves. Puerto Rico Sirena Selena by Mayra Santos-Febres Sirena Selana was a young boy in San Juan. A drag queen transforms Sirena, and Sirena becomes one of the most desired women in the Caribbean. However because she is placed on a pedestal, she wonders if she has become a woman or just a doll.
