Introduction In The Servant Leader , Robert P. Neuschel

makes the case that our leadership isexperiencing a diminution in ethics and a

loss of enduring values.

He forcefully and straightforwardly gives

an outline of what he believes are the major

changes in leadership. As a professor of

management and strategy, and earlier, as a

captain in the U. S. Army, Neuschel

observed the best of leadership, and

practiced it. He shares his insights with us

in ³The Servant Leader .´

Chapter ± 1 Two Requirements

of the Successful

ExecutiveWe need at least two qualities & capacities

to be a successful manager/leader of a

business or, in fact, any type of

organization. These two essentials are:

A high degree of business & organizational

smarts.

The capacity to provide inspired leadership.

For example :military analogy to emphasizehow vital each is & how the two essentials

ap er ± Managers &

Leaders ± Are They

The Same?Yes, managers & leaders are different; & it

is important to recognize the difference.

M anager: ³One who conducts business affairs with

economy ± with efficiency´.

Leader: ³One who goes before to guide or show

the way. The foremost person in an advancing

body. The one who has followers´.

Consider the issue of succession to the presidency. In discussing two candidates for his job, ³one of

the candidate is more leader than manager, other

more manager than leader´.

Chapter ± 3 The Foundations

Of Leadership:

Character And PersonalityFundamental traits of personality & depth

of character are more vital than intelligence

in a leader.

Studies of relationship between IQ levels &leadership - posit ive correlat ion.

Consider two examples:

o President Ronald Reagen was shot early in his

first term of office.o Pope John Paul II. His robust personality, his

smile, etc.

Leadership is more judgment than

knowledge..

Chapter ± 4 The Relationship

Between Leadership

And FollowershipAll leaders are also followers ± Have to

answer to some higher authority.

There is a great church hymn : ³O lead me,

Lord, that I may lead.´There are certain points which are required

for a leader for building his personality as

well as to gain support. They are:

History of successful performance. The manager can draw power from a

loyal

Chapter ± 6 Setting

Demanding Expectation

Levels The achievement level not only depends on

the manager.

One of the tests of talent in a manager ±

Generate Excitement. There are leaders who personified the ideal

of setting expectations levels.

By example like President Theodore

Roosevelt. Mr. Marvin Bower Managing Director of

Mckinsey & Company is the motivation for
