ForsomeathletesattheCanadiantrackandfieldchampionshipsinAugust2010,atriumphantreturnmeantpostingfasttimesafteraslowseason.ForChainey,itmeantreturningtoelitecompetitionafteranine-yearbattlewithkidneydisease.Threeyearsago,shewasunabletowalkandevenlackedthestrengthtowashherhair.

Asa14-year-old,Chaineywouldoftentravel820kilometresfromKapuskasingtoTorontototrainundercoachGaryLubinatYorkUniversity.At18,ChaineywenttoSpaintolearnthelanguageandcontinueherhigh-jumptraining.Whilethere,shebecamesodizzyshehadtobehospitalized.That’swhenshegotthenews:Herkidneyswerenolongerworking.Shehasn’tknownlifewithoutdialysissince.

Healthykidneysfilterwasteproductsfromtheblood.Indialysistreatment,amachinecleansthebloodatregularintervals,forexample,threetimesaweek.Chaineyhasbeenusingnocturnaldialysis,whichworkswhileshesleeps.

Sinceheroriginaldiagnosis,Chaineyhashadtoovercomefourrelapsesandcountlessotherobstacles,includinggoingblindfortwomonths.Shewastoldoverandovershe’dneverjumpagainbecausehermusclesweretoodamaged.ButforChainey,jumpingislikebreathing.
