What We Dance is Life

“In jazz, time is your friend., and when you find your own swing, or the swing time in any activity, actual time flies, yes. But it’s flying to where you want to be. And when you get there, you realize the ride is the destination. That’s the joy of swinging.” - Wynton Marsalis from “Moving to Higher Ground”

Jazz is a music and a dance born out of hardship and joy, structure and improvisation, self-expression and self-sacrifice, realism and idealism. It looks hard and long at life and then expresses it in all its joy and beauty, ugliness and pain, because it is essentially about everything which sweeps across our paths, every human experience, whether good or bad. “What we play is life.” – Louis Armstrong said that. We say “What we dance is life.” The music and the dance are one. We are an expression of the music as we move our bodies to the beat. Playing or dancing this music is about life – learning how to feel deeply and express honestly in the moment what is deep down inside of us, sharing our own ideas whilst listening to those around us share theirs, and finding the common ground and celebrating that.

The theme this year was influenced greatly by talks and writings by Wynton Marsalis, gifted in expressing the very heartbeat of jazz and swing in a way to shape our ideas about how to dance to this music and, in essence, how to live life. As Dawn Hampton so wisely urged us in her talks she gave around the world: “Feel the beat.” Let’s feel the beat. That swing beat is the heartbeat of jazz and it’s the heartbeat of our dance. After all, the heart’s rhythm is a swing beat. It’s no wonder that we connect so viscerally to this music!

We want to think about how jazz music and dance relates to life, expresses life. We want our teachers and musicians to share with us what dance means to their life. We want you to do the same. Maybe you haven’t thought about it. Well, now’s the time.

So what does it mean to swing? In dance and in life? Come explore your swing dancing, your expression of life. Contemplate how dancing and learning to move and groove to the this swinging beat tells us much about life: freedom, communication, expression, being present, listening to others, sharing, pushing limits.

Refine your own dancing talent, and leave the weekend inspired by the concepts and ideas we dig into, thinking about your dancing in new ways. You’ll even have the chance to work on a routine during the themed taster track and take the stage on Sunday during our all-festival “Dance is Life” show! Come join us!

Level Check for Lindy Hop Levels 2-4:

Friday, 9th June, 11:00 - 12:00 @ Lisboa Ginásio Clube, Room 2.1 "Melody"

Our 4 levels of Lindy Hop will become 5 during the Level Check. If you are signed up for Lindy Hop Levels 2-4, you will receive a Level Check ticket in your check-in envelope when you check in. Take that ticket on Friday morning to the Level Check, where our teachers will have you dance and put you into Levels 2-5, giving you your wristband at that time. When you receive your wristband, go show one of our volunteers so they can take note of your final level.

* If you signed up with a partner and your partner ended up in a different level, you can ask to be together but will be put in the lower of the two levels you two are in. ** If you miss the level check for any reason, show your level check ticket to the teachers of the first class you go to. They will write on it if it's ok for you to stay in that level or if you should move. Take your signed ticket to the info desk and you will get your class wristband.

Themed Taster Track Ticket:

Full pass holders who have signed up for a Routine-based Themed Taster Track will have your taster track ticket in your envelope. Please bring it to your taster track and show your teacher! If you are doing the non-routine-based tasters, simply show up to the taster with your class wristband.

ASF Shop:

Where you find our Info Desk, you'll also find our ASF Shop with the lovely Marta Figueroa from Catrela. Get your ASF t-shirts or Swing Station merchandise. You can also bring your own photo and Marta will make a personalized pin and postcard! But don't wait until the end of the weekend to see her about that!

Frankie Spirit Award: Even if you never met Frankie Manning, you surely have seen videos of him or have heard stories. This award is for the person we see at Atlantic Swing Festival who best embodies the spirit of Frankie Manning. We’ll have a voting box at the Info Desk on Sunday during classes and during the Sunday night party until midnight. We’ll announce the winner after that. Please think and vote carefully. Boldest Beginner: This is for a Curious Workshop or Lindy Hop Level 1 participant who has no fear of the social dance floor and just gets out there and has a good time, dancing with all levels. It can be hard to start dancing and feel intimidated by the dancers with more experience. We want to value the courage it takes to ignore the fear and enjoy the dance, right from the very beginning. And you as a more advanced dancer - get to know these students - ask them for a dance! Remember what it was to be a beginner and make them feel welcomed and appreciated!

Lisbon is rather a small capital city and it’s easy to get around the centre on foot, but it has some steep hills! With that in mind, here are some tips for getting around in Lisbon – by subway (Metro), bus + tram (Carris) and taxi. Metro, Bus and Tram You can get pretty much everywhere using the metro and bus/tram lines.

Metro timetable: lines run from 06:30 AM to 01:00 AM. Check the Metro website for metro lines.: http://metro.transporteslisboa.pt/eng/ Bus timetables: Check the Carris website for bus routes and timetables: http://carris.transporteslisboa.pt/en/home/ “Viva Viagem” [0.50€]: This is a reusable card that you can refill with cash or debit card in the machines at the metro stations. You can use them on metro and Carris (buses and tram). Prices: A one-hour ticket (if you opt for putting a fixed number of rides on your Viva Viagem card) costs 1.45€. A one-way ride on the metro (if you opt for “zapping” a fixed amount of money on your Viva Viagem card) costs 1.30€. There is also a one-day option for 6.15€. You can look here for the prices on the website. NB: When you use “Viva Viagem” (buses, trams or metro) you can change your bus, tram or metro during the next hour without being charged again if you have purchased a trip (and not zapping) . You will, however, be charged a new trip if you change from bus/tram to metro or vice-versa having put only money on your metro card (zapping). When inside the metro system, you may change lines as long as you don’t go through the turnstiles when changing. * We advise you not to buy bus/tram tickets on the bus or tram itself because it will cost you a lot more!

Taxi A good option for the parties, since the metro closes at 1 AM and though there are night buses, they are few and less regular. The average taxi fare from our party venue to somewhere around the centre of Lisbon is around 6-7€. A taxi can take up to 4 people so try to share one!
