Sandia National Laboratories is dedicated to strengthening education in our communities by encouraging students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math careers through our K–12 education programs.

Sandia’s CROSSLINKS PROGRAM links our science community with schools to enrich science education for local students.

FAMILY MATH NIGHT provides an evening of hands-on math activities held at local elementary schools.

Our SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATH (STEM) DIVERSITY PROGRAMS engage middle and high school students by linking science to the real world through hands-on science and engineering activities. Students are also provided an opportunity to explore a variety of STEM careers.

The DOE REGIONAL SCIENCE BOWL is an exciting tournament-style academic competi-tion that challenges students’ knowledge of math and science.

Exhibitors must register and set up their exhibits during this time. The registration packet will include an official program, 60th year pin, t-shirt, and badge. Doors will close promptly at 7:00 pm!

5:30 pm – 6:15 pm Judging Workshop (for students) – African American Performing Arts Center (not mandatory, but Longtime Master Judge Chairs, Len Duda and Richard Bild, will give very helpful!) interviewing tips, ways to prepare, and what to expect on judging day.

6:30 pm – 8:00 pm Alumni Panel – African American Performing Arts Center Past participants will discuss their experience at Research Challenge, lessons learned, doors opened, and life after science fair!

Byron Morton Broadcast Meteorologist, KOAT

Master of Ceremonies

Byron graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Geosciences at the University of Oklahoma in 1996.

Before joining the KOAT Action 7 News team in December 2001, Byron was chief meteorologist at WMSN-TV in Madison, WI, and fill-in meteorologist at its sister station, WKOW-TV. Byron has also held on-air positions at WOI-TV in Des Moines and WAOW-TV in Wausau, WI, and served as weather producer for Good Morning America, The LA Times, and Televisa Mexico.

Byron is the second forecaster in the state to earn the prestigious designation of "Certified Broadcast Meteorologist" from the American Meteorological Society (AMS), and he holds a seal of approval from the National Weather Association (NWA).

When he’s not keeping an eye on the sky, Byron enjoys weight-lifting, tennis, hiking, running, and just about anything else outdoors…and of course joining us every year at Research Challenge!

2020 GRAND AWARDS CEREMONY

Keynote Speaker Dr. Karissa Culbreath is an Assistant Professor for UNM School of Medicine, Department of Pathology and the Director of TriCore Laboratory’s Infectious Diseases Lab She is also the Associate Vice Chancellor for the BOSS Programs in the HSC Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. The BOSS Programs provide legislatively funded K-12 science, technology, engineering, math and health (STEM-H) programming primarily serving African American students as well as other underrepresented student populations.

Dr. Culbreath, an Albuquerque native, is active in academic and community realms. She holds a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology. Karissa serves the community in various capacities and has been recognized for her roles in leadership and community development. She is an active member of the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Karissa is a sought-after speaker and author of a children’s book, Daddy’s Little Girl, which has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award. This story highlights the role of the affirmations of a father in building those dreams in a young girl. From doctor, to architect, to teacher, to firefighter, girls can be anything they want to be.

Karissa has a passion to empower individuals to achieve spiritual, emotional and personal balance and seeks to provide people of all ages with the tools to achieve this challenging task. She seeks to connect to her generation through maintaining her authenticity and charm while delivering powerful messages on living a purposeful life.

I want to congratulate you on behalf of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center for qualifying for the Central New Mexico Research Challenge. This is a great opportunity to try your hand at real scientific research – and perhaps the first step on the path toward a rewarding career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

You might not have given much thought yet to your future career choices, but it’s not too soon to consider health care as a profession. Students with a STEM background are ideally suited to become doctors, nurses, pharmacists, allied health professionals and biomedical researchers. At UNM we offer outstanding programs in these areas, along with scholarships for qualified students.
