contentsWho we are
“Working Warriors and NAIW has been life-changing for me, providing me with training and opportunities to launch my career. I wouldn’t be where I am today without this program. ”
A Turn-Key Solution to Indigenous Engagement
Working Warriors is an innovative national skills registry and human resources system designed specifically for every Indigenous community in Canada. We work with communities on a national level to determine the skill set, employment and educational levels of each of their members with the ultimate goal of creating a national skills inventory.
The National Association of Indigenous Workers is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the skills and talents of Indigenous employees and helping to secure meaningful and long-term employment, while celebrating their culture. The NAIW connects a growing Indigenous workforce to training, education and employment opportunities with industry.

COMMON BARRIERS ∙ Many communities do not have adequate Human Resources systems in place.
∙ Lack of information regarding education levels, experience, training, demographics, etc. for each community member.
∙ Many individuals do not have a resume or an avenue to market themselves to industry.
To address these barriers we designed Working Warriors – an online skills registry designed specifically for Indigenous communities and individuals to use. The Working Warriors portal collects the data required to understand each community’s unique workforce and business structure. We provide HR tools such as step-by-step resume builders, business directories and a comprehensive Community Resource Information System that generates useful analytics (education and employment levels, demographics, etc.) and status reports for every Indigenous community nationwide.

COMMON BARRIERS ∙ A standardized engagement process is absent to connect industry and Indigenous communities, therefore employment opportunities are minimized for individuals.
∙ An Indigenous workforce is often mandatory in most capital projects, yet companies across Canada are struggling to find this workforce.
∙ There is no avenue for Indigenous communities to market themselves with industry, thus their voice is lost.
The National Association of Indigenous Workers provides a standardized system for employers to engage with Indigenous people. By providing employers with the information and resources necessary to engage an Indigenous workforce, our members can reach new markets and better jobs. The NAIW exists to support the goals of its members and is the collective voice of Indigenous workers in Canada.

A Community-Based Approach
DATABASE Working Warriors hires an administrator in each Indigenous community to collect the information required to input into the Working Warriors database (resumes, skill set, educational levels, etc.) to determine their workforce.
COMMUNITY PROFILE A profile is built that allows communities to understand who is ready to go to work and who needs educational support or upgrading to enter the workforce.
Here is a breakdown of how the process works

Apprenticeship Program
Working Warriors and the NAIW helps to prepare its members to enter the workforce. We give them a competitive advantage by facilitating orientation and training programs to upgrade their skills and advance in the workplace.
We have built various partnerships with educational and training organizations, such as Contact North, who offer online training programs. You can receive the education required to enter the workforce without leaving your community.

Online Training Programs Post-Secondary InstitutionsThe Indigenous Apprenticeship Program (IAP) is an internal program to help individuals enter the workforce by developing their skills through job shadowing, training and career counseling while securing employment. The IAP is designed to transition entry level employees into an apprenticeship, creating a long-term skilled workforce.
We have various contacts and relationships with Post-Secondary institutions and affiliated Indigenous centres that we can connect you with, to receive information specific to your needs. Whether you are looking for information about student loans, scholarships or courses you can take, we can provide guidance and point you in the right direction.
Safety Training and OrientationPreparing a new employee for a job site is a key factor in the successful retention and safety of the individual. This is why we offer a comprehensive three day orientation that covers:
Day 1: Orientation (workers’ rights and responsibilities, safe work habits, etc.)
Day 2: Safety Training (WHMIS, fall protection, etc.)
Day 3: Site Preparation (what to expect before you arrive at job site, conflict resolution, adapting to the work environment, time management, etc.)
O N-T H E-J O B T R A I N I N GWe encourage all members to reach their full potential and advance their skill set by receiving ad-ditional education through one of our educational partners.

Working Warriors and the NAIW is
the result of many years of listening
and learning of the struggles
that communities face and the
challenges Industry encounters in
building relationships. For years
we have been piloting and testing
this program within communities
and on job sites, so we know what
works. Here are some highlights
from the journey that led us to
create NAIW and Working Warriors.
10 YEARS IN THE MAKING Worldwide InitiativeThe concern for effective
Indigenous engagement is
felt well beyond our national
borders. We have designed
our platform to be easily
translated and utilized as
a bridge between industry
and an Indigenous workforce
worldwide.
PartnershipsWe developed various partnerships
with organizations such as the Native
Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC)
to assist our members.

O U R I M PAC TWe have a corporate responsibility to ensure that all Canadians can share in our nation’s wealth. Indigenous peoples have the youngest and fastest growing demographic in Canada. The opportunities we provide them today will shape our workforce for tomorrow. Through a partnership with Indigenous peoples, Industry and Government, we have the ability to build a new workforce and help individuals become the role models that will inspire future generations.
