President's Letter
With this issue, I want to introduce some new members of the Friends of the Library (POL) Board. Thepicture on page 8 was taken at the November 2013 Friends meeting and election of officers. The newboard members are depicted here as well as some old board members. And by old, I mean old.
The new officers are: Candace Boynton, elected as VP of the organization, and Barbara Martin,Newsletter Editor.
Candace compiles the list of members that are honored with a book for contributions of $25 or more andfor any amount of volunteer labor.
Barbara, as you can discern from recent issues ofthis letter, is new to the editor profession. We all help.
The other folks pictured are re-elected officials. Besides myself, there is Marjorie Malone in charge ofcoordinating volunteer services to homebound library users. The volunteers deliver books to thehomebound individual. We now have about eleven individuals residing throughout Boone County. If youknow of a potential candidate, let me know. We can perhaps help provide some library services.
Alice Smith is the person you deal with most frequently. She writes all those thank you messages youreceive in the mail, signed by management.
Jackie Hem is our Treasurer and gives close attention to the inflows and outflows.
Shirley Copeland is Secretary of the organization, thus records all minutes and writes letters. She takescare of most written communications.
Mary Wright leads a group of investigators. They investigate all donated books, categorize and price. They call themselves the "Book Sleuths". Without the Book Sleuths, our book sales wouldn't be theprofessional operations our customers have come to expect, and we wouldn't have the revenue to provideas much library support.
Candace Boynton and Barbara Martin have replaced Kathryn Crunkleton and Chris Posterick, respectively. Kathryn and Chris have served this organization well for many years and continue toparticipate. We owe them much and can only repay in gratitude.
There are other members of the FOL Board that aren't mentioned herein, but will be introduced in futureletters.
George Cline

A Potentially Interesting List of Reads
As is sometimes the case, The Wall Street Journal publishes a list of "bibles" on a particularsubject. These are compiled by aficionados or experts in the field and are considered "mustreads" though not necessarily "best sellers" -- except perhaps to college students.
The most recent list of eight is about war -- military manuals. They are:
The Illiad by Homer covers the Trojan War. (Adult Non-Fiction 883.01 HOMER)
History of Peloponnesian War by Thucydides has Sparta and Athens as opponents. (The GreatBooks of Reading & Discussions Program: third series, vol. 2. Adult Nonfiction808.8 GREAT)
On War by Carl von Clausevitz is a classic military strategy handbook. (The Great Books ofReading & Discussion Program: third series, vol. 2. Adult Nonfiction 808.8 GREAT)
War and Peace by Tolstoy covers Napoleon's aggression on Russia. (Adult FictionFTOLSTOy)
All Quiet on the Western Front by Remarque is set during WWI. (Adult FictionFREMARQUE)
A Farwell to Arms by Hemingway is also set during WWI. (Adult Fiction F HEMINGWAy)
Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut jumps forward a few years to WWII and the bombing ofDresden. (Adult Fiction F VONNEGUT)
The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien is a collection of short stories about soldiers in theVietnam War. (Adult Fiction F O'BRIEN)
I remember having read at least half of this list or perhaps what I remember is viewing video. Iforget which. All of these books are available for checkout at the Boone County Library: thelibrary section and the call numbers are listed in parenthesis. I know I will pick up On War andThe Things They Carried, if available, at our next book sale.
Hope this list intrigues you, also.
