One theme was crime & prejudice against immigrants
Corruption in New York City especially with cops
Slums & dangers being ignored by the wealthy
Hard times in New York before it became what it is today
But also shows some similarities to today

targeting poor immigrant children
the newspapers decide not the report the murders
because they think the kids had it coming to them & that nobody cared about immigrant children

Also this was a time when psychology was being introduced & a key player for that in the book was Dr. Kreizler
Kreizler had a belief that deep rooted childhood issues caused people to become insane & that it was not just something that happened to some

It was about Independence, pride, & courage

Then became a follower of Pancho Villa
There he served as a field doctor
1942 he received the Mexican National prize for Arts & science

He lead a group of men to fight against forces of Victoriano Huerta
Marksmanship & ability to lead in battle made his reputation
At the beginning he joins fighting to change his country
But then he does not know why he keeps going
& is not as passionate towards his cause
By the end of the book he flees to the U.S.
