Author shortlisted for award HERTFORDSHIRE-based author Jonathan Stroud has been shortlisted for the 2010 Costa Book Awards. The awards recognise the most enjoyable books in five categories – First Novel, Novel, Biography, Poetry and Children’s Book – published in the last year by writers based in the UK and Ireland. Jonathan has been shortlisted for the children’s book award with his book Bartimaeus: The Ring of Solomon (Doubleday Children’s Books). This year’s Costa Book Awards attracted 540 entries and judges include authors Adele Parks, Juliet Nicolson and Tim Bowler; poet Ruth Padel; biographer Caroline Moorehead OBE and broadcasters and presenters Lorraine Kelly, Anneka Rice and Anita Rani. Winners in the five categories, who each receive £5,000, will be announced on January 5. The overall winner of the Costa Book of the Year 2010 will receive £30,000 and will be selected and announced at the Costa Book Awards ceremony in central London on January 25. OCTOBER saw the long-awaited launch of the The Pride of Pirton, a book charting the history of the village men who fought in World War I. It is a meticulously-researched book that took authors Jonty Wild, Tony French and Chris Ryan to every single grave occupied by these brave men. It was launched to a fanfare of a contingent of Chelsea Pensioners and ‘The Rifles’, a WWI re-enactment group in the Pirton Sports and Social Club and the village. 'The Rifles’ built a bunker and a typical trench tent and had on display an impressive array of WWI weaponry; rifles, bayonets, grenades, general kit and typical trench rations. Chris Ryan said, ‘It was great to see young children whose great-great- grandfathers might have fought in that conflict being shown the ins and outs of trench warfare and hopefully gaining an insight into what their ancestors had to face. ‘The Chelsea Pensioner contingent was delightful. Self-effacing men with medal-bedecked chests that didn't come from marching around parade grounds or being wounded in combat.' ‘The Rifles’ then led a march to the beautifully-restored Village War Memorial, where a wreath was laid and the Last Post played. Proceedings then returned to the Sports and Social Club, where an open bar and a casserole supper supplied by The Fox pub was very well received. Copies of the book are now on sale at the Pirton Village Shop or by contacting Jonty Wild at Cats Whiskers, 14a High Street, Pirton, SG5 3PS or www.pirton.org.uk/ww1book. The cost is £19.95 plus £4.50 if posted. hertfordshire.greatbritishlife.co.uk 120 BOOKWORM The The Pride of Pirton book launch
