Principal’s Report NAPLAN You may have heard on the news about schools having to ask their students to re-sit NAPLAN tests due to problems with the online rollout. While we were involved with the online sessions, we had only one small issue resulting in the Year 7 and 9 students having to do their Numeracy test on paper. Other than this, our tests were completed and our students will not be re-sitting any of the tests. Results will be available towards the end of Term 3. Many thanks to April Griffiths for organising the tests and to the staff who ran the sessions. Working Bee Our re-scheduled Working Bee went ahead last Friday afternoon with a small but dedicated group getting into the tasks. Huge thanks to the families who came along and to Tom Bleicher for organising the Bee. Pupil Free Day and Public Holiday This is a reminder notice that there will be a correction day on Friday, 14 th June. This will be a pupil free day. This date was endorsed by School Council at the February meeting. A reminder also that the Queen’s Birthday public holiday falls on Monday 10 th June. Biggest Morning Tea This whole school event will take place on Wednesday 5 th June at recess time. The theme is ‘Pyjamas and Onesies’. All families can provide a plate of food to share and the gold coin donation will go to the Cancer Council. Please remember that we try to avoid nuts in our food to prevent any allergic reactions. A note will be sent home to remind everyone of this activity. Assembly Our next whole school assembly will be held on Friday, 7 th June at 1.55pm in the Stadium. All are welcome to come along. Thank you, Mme Siân Head Lice We have a case of head lice reported so it’s important to check your child's hair regularly even when you don’t think they have head lice. Using conditioner is a cheap and effective way to help find head lice in your child’s hair. Conditioner doesn’t kill head lice, but it stuns them for about 20 minutes, so they cannot move around or hang onto the hair. This method gives you time to comb through the hair with a lice comb and determine if your child has head lice and begin a treatment method as soon as possible if they are detected.

Treatment of Head Lice Head lice are only found on the human head or hair. Head lice do not live on furniture, hats, bedding, carpet or anywhere else in the environment. Treating anything other than the human head does not eradicate head lice. There are two main treatment options to remove head lice:

• Mechanical removal • Chemical removal

Mechanical removal or 'comb and conditioner' method What you need for this method:

• Normal comb to detangle hair prior to using metal lice comb • Fine toothed metal lice comb (available from your local chemist or online) • Conditioner - buy a cheap brand as you will be needing a lot of it, and preferably one that is white to

make spotting the lice easier • White paper towel

Mechanical removal involves applying conditioner to dry hair. Cover all of the hair with conditioner, detangle hair with normal comb and separate into sections. Then, using a fine long toothed metal lice comb, comb through the hair in sections. The conditioner does not kill lice but stuns them for about 20 minutes enabling easier removal. The long toothed metal comb will remove nits and the stunned head lice. Wipe the comb on a white tissue and check for any lice or nits. Keep combing until no more appear on the tissue. This method should be done every second or third day until no nits and lice remain, usually about 7 to 10 days. This method is the preferred way to detect and treat head lice because it is effective, does not contribute to insecticide resistance in head lice and also presents a low risk of skin irritation. This method also helps manage head lice before they become established on the head. Simply keep a good head lice comb in the shower and every time your family washes their hair use the fine comb through the

hair. This will ensure lice are "caught" before they lay too many eggs. If your children are old enough to wash their own hair encourage them to use the comb themselves. Or keep a comb handy to where you wash your children's hair and use it every shampoo. Chemical removal What you need for this method:

• Normal comb to detangle hair prior to using metal lice comb • Chemical treatment containing synthetic or natural insecticides that kill head lice (talk to your local

pharmacist to identify the treatments containing insecticides) • Fine toothed metal lice comb (available from your local chemist or online) • White paper towel

If you choose to use a chemical treatment, remember to follow the instructions carefully. You will also need to comb through the hair to ensure the treatment is working. If you find dead lice it means the product has worked. If you find live lice, the treatment has not worked. Don't be tempted to re-apply or over-apply the same chemical if it doesn't appear to be working. Instead switch to another treatment that uses a different chemical compound or use the ‘comb and conditioner method’ as described under the mechanical removal. It is very important that you repeat the chemical treatment in seven days to kill any newly hatched eggs as most chemical treatments will not kill the eggs (nits).

SRC - Biggest Morning Tea S.R.C will be holding its annual Biggest Morning Tea for 2019 on Wednesday, 5th June. The Biggest Morning Tea is one of Cancer Council Australia's major fundraising events. The theme for our school’s morning tea this year is pyjamas/onesies. We ask for a gold coin donation on the day, and this will be collected in the morning at home group. All money goes towards the Cancer Council to help provide funds to search for a cure for cancer.

Each family is asked to provide plate of food, on a disposable plate please. This will be shared at recess with all students on the lawn area outside of the Grey building. If the food contains nuts, please label the food item. National Stimultaneous Story Time Wednesday, 22nd May Foundation - Year Six

SMART SPELLING ~ segmenting practice Segmenting is a key component of teaching spelling and it is a skill worked on with students consistently. Within our Smart Spelling sessions, and immersed in all curriculum areas, students are taught how words need to be segmented both orally and in writing. Oral segmenting To segment a word orally:

1. Say the word out loud, slowly and naturally. For example, ship. 2. Segment the word into its individual sounds (phonemes) holding up a finger for each sound.

For example, /sh/i/p/ – 1, 2, 3 fingers.

Written segmenting After segmenting a spoken word into its individual phonemes, you need to assign the correct grapheme (letter/s) to represent each phoneme in writing.

For example:

We may be lucky enough to see a small performance from some of the children as well!! We are pleased to be providing a morning tea for the children to share with their special visitors from 11am in the silver building. We were overwhelmed by the support of our recent Mother’s Day High Tea and would once again like to ask the BDS families if they would kindly provide a small plate of morning tea for this important event. Donations can be sent with students at the start of the day or can be brought along during the morning. Please leave your donation in the wet area of 'Silver'. We thank you in advance for your support of both the Parents’ Club and F - 6 staff and students in hosting this event. Kathryn Lanyon President - BDS
