Why we need to strengthen border security?

• High Risk Border Sectors like US-MEXICO Borders are still not fully protected and secured.

• According to studies, more than 30,000 people per year cross border and enter into the US illegally.

• Across the border, drug trafficking is also dangerously increasing.

Provisions in Reform Bill 2013

Increasing the strength of officers at high risk border areas especially Tucson sector in Arizona and the Rio Grande and

Laredo sectors in Texas.

Additional funding to buy and implement latest surveillance technology and highly specific electronics security gadgets.

Additional funding to build Border fencing.

Increasing the strength of officers at high risk border areas

• By 2017, recruiting 3,500 more U.S. Customs & Border Protection officers in the army.

• Authorizing National Guards to take part in missions related to Border Security, constructing additional surveillance and additional fencing.

• Making more check points across the borders especially US-MEXICO border.

Adding more surveillance system across border

• Within 180 days, after the enactment of the bill, US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) needs to submit report “Comprehensive Southern Border Security Strategy”.

• DHS have to submit exact strategy to execute the plan of increasing and maintaining southern border security.

• Deploying Radio communications interoperability, ground-based mobile surveillance systems, electronic sensors etc. to strengthen border security.

•  Congress has granted the DHS $3,000,000,000 in order to pursue this strategy.

Additional funding to create border fencing

• Within 180 days, after the enactment of the bill, DHS needs to write and submit report “Border Fencing Strategy”.

• To strategize border fencing including double or triple layer fencing especially southern border.

• Congress grants the DHS $1,500,000,000 in order to pursue this strategy.

In June 2013, Comprehensive Immigration Bill was passed by Senate and sent to Congress for vote. Due to opposition of Conservative Republicans, this bill is still in- house waiting to become legislation.
