The year has started with its usual rush of sorting out timetabling, attending introductory lessons all mixed in with swimming heats and the carnival. We start the year with around 224 students, 20 teaching and 10 support staff. Naomi Excell has taken on the role of English/ HASS Coordinator, Lauren Kirk is SACE Coordinator for term 1, Beth Cuthbertson has returned from accouchement leave and Hayley Artz is working in the student support area. The focus for staff on our planning days has been to create the environment that ensures that all students have a great start. Research shows that many students have identified the most important characteristics of good lessons as: effective explanations, useful feedback, passionate and committed teaching, teachers enjoying working with adolescents and teachers demonstrating a deep subject knowledge. Our teachers are fully prepared to create the sort of learning environments and conditions that will challenge students to improve their learning outcomes. Our 2017 SACE results were pleasing with 95% of students achieving their SACE. We were excited to learn that Gema Nunn achieved the ATAR required to become eligible to take up her scholarship at the Australian National University. As well as that, each student who applied for a university place received their first choice in the first round – an excellent reward for their efforts. Term 1 is traditionally busy with numerous opportunities for students to demonstrate their sporting skill. Last Friday saw a successful swimming carnival completed in glorious weather with Walamba taking out honours. Well done to all students who participated, with many putting in really hard to contribute to their teams performance. The day was superbly managed by the PE faculty led by Shane Orrock. Our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) building project is making steady progress with all spaces that will be redeveloped gutted ready for the new fit out. The builders are talking about a late May early June completion which sounds encouraging. STEM learning will create a clear direction for the school this year and beyond with staff development being focussed on changing teaching practice to reflect more the demands of changing ways of working beyond school. Competencies such as Critical and Creative Thinking along with increased Numeracy and Literacy will form the backbone of teacher development this year starting with a student free day devoted entirely to improving literacy in secondary school. Our second student free day will be on developing staff skills in implementing the iPad rollout so that they begin to develop the skills to use the devices with classes. This will allow students to be more creative as they work through their inquiry and project based learning tasks. Staff are looking forward to learning ways to use iPads to improve their teaching and raise student outcomes. We have timed the day early in the year so that staff will be able to use the iPads in their classrooms as soon as possible. The school is in the process of implementing a Learner Management System that will eventually allow parents to access things like student timetables, attendance, progress and end of term reports. Our Governing Council AGM is scheduled for 27 February at 7.30pm and is an ideal opportunity to become involved in school governance such as finance, grounds and facilities and Vercos Farm management. Involvement in Governing Council gives a great insight into the behind the scenes workings of the school. On Wednesday I met with the members of our new Tatiara Partnership made up of Keith, Bordertown and Mundulla schools and preschools, to look at ways of continuing the collaborative work we started last year. We are not aligned with any other high schools but will be working more closely with Keith Area School and our feeder primary schools. Our new Education Director is Jim Michalanney (recently Murray Bridge High School Principal) who seems committed to helping us create growth for every student in every class. Markus Trnvovsky

Last year, 14 students and 2 teachers, accompanied with an Expedition leader, went to China,

Laos and Vietnam for World Challenge. In Laos, we did our community project phase, which

was to help a village of nearly 90 people dig a trench all across their village so that they could

have running water in every household. The trench digging was hard work as it involved climbing

and digging on steep hills and in the blistering sun. After this, we headed to one of the biggest

countries, China. In China, we had our Trek phase, which involved a 5 day trek that was 60km

long. Our Tour Guide Sam, helped us along the way, teaching us many things about his culture

and how Chinese people in the fields work and farm. After China, we headed to a Tourist

Highlight Country, Vietnam. In Vietnam, this was our relaxation phase, as we all pondered and

experienced the sights in Hanoi, Vietnam's Capital. We also went to Halong Bay to experience

the views, beautiful food and explore the caves around the bay.

Overall, the experience was one to never forget, as everyone liked their time over there.

The 2018 Swimming Carnival, was held Friday of week 1 in perfect weather conditions. The competition was tight throughout the day, with Walamba winning for the 3rd year in a row. The level of support shown by all was excellent with many students swimming in older age groups, or events to get points for their team. The encouragement given to swimmers in the water was exemplary, as some swimmers battled to reach the end of the pool. Well done to everyone.

One of the highlights of the day was the girl’s Kirby Cup with a really tight finish with just .07 of a second separating Bonnie and Caitlyn in a great race.

A big thankyou to the pool staff for their assistance, at both the carnival and heats day and all school staff that assisted throughout the day and to Sandy Crawford who again returned to be referee. It was great to see so many spectators enjoying the day and supporting the swimmers. This was a fantastic way to start the school sporting year.

SCHOOL CARD 2018 The School Card Scheme provides financial assistance towards educational expenses for low income families who meet the eligibility criteria of having a child or children from 4 years of age attending school full time, independent full time students undertaking 6 subjects in year 10 or 11, or 5 subjects in year 12. Applicants wishing to be considered for School Card assistance must apply each year and the income limit is documented in the table below. YR 12 PARENT INFORMATION EVENING Our first Year 12 Parent meeting for 2018 was held on Tuesday night, where policies relating to our Year 12 students, including attendance and assessment, were outlined. It was also an opportunity to re-outline SACE protocol and answer questions in relation to this. The Year 12 study line format was an important focus of the information session, with parents and Year 12 students aware of the expectations for these lessons, and also the consequences for inappropriate use of the study area for this valuable time. Parents were given a timeline for 2018, highlighting key dates for our Year 12 students, particularly in relation to the Tertiary Careers Expo (Adelaide Convention Centre April 8

9th), the Adelaide Careers Expo (Wayville Showgrounds May 25th and 26

th ), University Open

MYTERN (Take Emotional Responsibility Now) is a simple yet powerful language that helps students, staff and parents cope with their response to the ever-increasing stresses of life. This is particularly important for secondary school students, as they are exposed to increased peer pressure and mounting work expectations. Far too many students are becoming overwhelmed by the accumulation of the little things. MYTERN gives students a strategy to handle the small pressures so that they don’t feel they have lost control. Rather than trying to eliminate the stress (which is impossible) and allow it to decrease your health, MYTERN teaches you how to build your emotional intelligence and create health and resilience out of these everyday stressors. Using the common metaphor of driving, the simple yet powerful language is designed to cross age and cultural barriers, so that it can be used effectively both at home and at school. MYTERN replaces blame and judgement with responsibility, empathy and compassion. As MYTERN was introduced to Bordertown Primary School last year, it is important that the language evolves so that secondary students understand that they may not be able to control circumstances, but they can control how they respond to it. On Wednesday 14

th February, Dr Jane Foster (a teacher for over 35 years)

will be presenting to our parent/community body. During the session, she will be explaining what MYTERN is and how you can apply the simple language every day, helping to positively impact you, your family and your wider community. As Dr Foster found in her research; it can literally save lives As MYTERN is going to be implemented across our school community, we believe that attending this meeting is an opportunity not to be missed. Hearing first hand from the creator will assist in understanding just how powerful learning the skill of MYTERN can be. Even if you have attended a MYTERN presentation before, it is well worth attending again. The Parent session will be held in the Study Hub at 7pm, Wednesday 14
