Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) The following information is being sent home as an informative process only. Parents are not required to act on this information. We have recently completed the process of collating information for the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). All schools are required to collect information about the numbers of students that they provide adjustments to under the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and Disability Standards of Education (2005). From 2018, this data has been used as the basis for national funding. The NCCD involves the collection of: the number of students receiving adjustments to enable them to participate in education on the same basis

as other students the level of adjustment provided to students student’s type of disability if known Under the model the definition of disability is broad and includes a range of learning difficulties, health and mental health conditions. All identified children are included in the data collection process and the required information has been included in this year’s data census.

Further information can be found at:

Run-a-thon

This year’s run-a-thon will be conducted on Thursday 19 September. The event is conducted every second year and is a major fund raiser for the school. Funds raised from this event go towards Kids’ Voice to support them with the various activities and resources they plan for and require each year. Kids’ Voice members also have the responsibility to prioritise their proposed purchases. Once again, this year’s run-a-thon will be a great opportunity for the school community to

become involved in. Parents and family members are welcome to come along and join in the fun. More details will be provided closer to the date.

Children’s Book Week 2019 Book Week is coming up! In week 5 (19- 23 August), we will be celebrating Children’s Book Week. The theme this year is, “Reading is my secret power!”. Book Week is always an exciting event in our school calendar. It promotes reading and writing as well as appreciation of books. It can also evoke creative responses through art experiences that relate to specific books. Most classes will be creating an artwork during this week. Different activities will be happening for Book Week, including:

On Monday 19th August, we will hold an origami challenge for year 4- 7s in the library at lunchtime. On Tuesday 20th August, the R – 4 classes are going to the Civic Centre to hear from Australian author and

illustrator, Janeen Brian. This will be funded by the Bordertown Public Library. On Wednesday 21st August, we will once again hold our “Story Reading Night” for R – 2 children. Parents can bring

their children to the school library at 6:30 pm to hear stories read by special guest readers. Afterwards, the children will have milo and a biscuit, before going home to bed by 7:30. They can wear their pyjamas and dressing gowns for this cosy occasion.

On Friday 23rd August, children are invited to dress up. They can dress up to show off their “super power”, or as a book character. Old costumes recycled to fit the wide theme, would be less stress!

Each day in the library at lunch time, there will be competitions for all of the children to take part in if they wish.

MS Read-a-thon is back! Children are asked to read as many books in Au-gust as they can. Friends and family can sponsor them to raise money to send children who have a parent affected by Multiple Sclerosis, to a camp with children in similar situations. I would like to do something towards raising money the MS Society through the library. I would like to combine it with Book Week this year and ask for a small donation (gold coin), for the dress up day on Friday of Week 5 (23rd August). If you would like your child to take part in the actual read-a-thon, you can enrol them online at this website: https://www.msreadathon.org.au/parents/parents_info Thankyou for your support.

Students made pasta with broccoli , chilli and lemon sauce. Broccoli was enjoyed by (almost) everyone!

The school quadrangle has come alive with tubs of healthy herbs and vegetables!

To go with the pasta, students also made pumpkin and choc chip biscuits, super easy and tasty.

Worry is something that happens to just about everybody. In fact, it’s supposed to

happen. It’s normal. It’s important. It can be helpful. It gets us going, even protects us. Worry

can actually be a safety mechanism – a feature of our brain that goes back to early days

when ‘fear chemicals’ were released if people felt a threat to their survival – often resulting

in fight, flight or freeze reactions. BUT when the unease or discomfort of worry goes into

overdrive, it is no longer useful. Excessive worry, or anxiety, can be crippling and affect us in

ways that impairing our wellbeing and quality of life.

Studies show that I in 4 Australians have anxiety-related conditions that interfere with and

impact their life. Further to this, statistics indicate that as many as 1 in 7 boys and twice as

many girls are likely to develop mild to moderate anxiety in as young as primary school.

There is no doubt that many families and schools are witnessing and experiencing this

increase first hand.

Some of the signs of anxiety in children are dwelling on the ‘what ifs..?’, the inability to ‘let

things go’, constantly expecting the worst and interpreting ‘normal’ or routine situations as

dangerous – such as going to school. Physical symptoms may include lots of tears, feeling

‘sick’, appetite change, jittery movements, inability to sleep and anger. These feelings and

behaviours can even get to the stage where ‘shut down’ or loss of all logical thinking occur.

This is so hard for us as parents/carers and educators. But it can be managed. When we

understand anxiety and worry as an ‘emotion’ and notice when it happens, we can move

one step closer to better handling its effect.

Dr Justin Coulson – a leading parenting expert - recommends starting with noticing our own

responses to anxiety as well as that of our kids. Emotions are contagious. Children can pick

up on and mimic our crazy as well as our calm. We can’t take the worries away but we can

calmly reassure them that they are safe and give them the stability they need to walk along

the ‘balance beam’ of life. Sure they may wobble or even topple, but if we hold their hand

and help them balance again, encourage and support them to take little steps and gently

guide instead of doing the hard work ‘for’

them, this can be an important step in

increasing resilience and techniques to move

forwards.

Some other tools that may be useful are

‘breathing’ deeply and slowly to relax our

brains, imagining our thoughts as clouds

drifting in the breeze – as thoughts come and

go (google ‘pixel thoughts’ for a cool idea),

making a plan of what to do if our worries

take over, and practising calm and brave

actions and thoughts. Play can help too!!

Please note that It is important to seek expert

help if needed.

I have a number of resources and books to

help deal with anxiety which I am all too

happy to share.

Here is a visual that Kylie Staude found which

may be useful too! Feel free to ask us for a

copy!

Take care,

Karen
