This year, the town has gone full out to make Christmas really special. The whole town is involved and everyone has put their heart in making the town special.

The Town has lots to offer for your Christmas shopping, festive dining, and just things to see and do! Just have a look at what’s on offer in the shops in Fore Street – a real traditional shopping high street, with that unique Cornish flavour. Try a coffee and tapas at Smorgers, and new to Fore Street is Café Tengo with its great first floor childrens play area. Don’t forget Market House and its unique mix of specialist retailers and refreshment offers – a real slice of St. Austell’s historic past.

Then, there is a wonderful selection of major retailers in the White River Centre. The centre has further great places for you to dine and have a coffee.

This year, our Christmas celebrations and events start with the celebrity light switch on, on Tuesday evening at 6pm. The switch on will take place on the corner of Fore Street, opposite the Church and Market House. it will be a super start! St. Austell late night shopping for Christmas, also starts with the light switch on.

The towns shops will be open until 8pm, every Tuesday throughout December.

Every week in December, there are events happening in the town, including markets, entertainers, and much more. Our full event schedule is shown on the facing page. Christmas is a family time, and the towns vicar, Michael Marshall, has also arranged some great seasonal events. See his events schedule on page 9.

So I heard a man in the queue at ASDA say to his friend with naive simplicity…

“Well I got me lottery ticket.., it looks like a winner to me… have you ever won?”

The mate he spoke to looked at him as if he was daft and said,

“You clown, it’s not something you win every day you know. It’ll be a miracle if you win with that.”

But it wouldn’t be would it? Not a miracle, someone HAS to win don’t they?

My mum used to say to me “I think it’s a miracle every time a baby is born”. But it’s not is it? Babies are born every day. It’s exciting for those involved but hardly extraordinary. So what’s the big deal about a baby being born in Palestine two thousand years ago? Why are we still remembering the event in 2013 with carols and cards?

From the time it was claimed that his mother was a virgin (socially substantiated only, DNA testing was not available of course) through the remarkable acts associated with his life, to his death and widely authenticated resurrection 30 odd years later, clearly something extra-ordinary was going on in the life of this baby born at the time we now call Christmas. It was a ‘wonder’, something miraculous in fact.

Well the point is, some of the greatest thinkers around him at the time, and subsequently many others were driven to an uncomfortable and to some, a scandalous conclusion; that in this baby God entered our world to live among us and offer

“…a full and holy cure” as one carol says.

Now whatever else it might be, this is certainly not something that happens every day!

Perhaps ‘A Great and Mighty Wonder’ might describe it? (One of our Christmas Carols this year.)

On each of the 12 days until Christmas Eve there will be a different activity taking place in the afternoon, organised by various White River Place retailers and local charities. With everything from Christmas decoration making workshops to competitions and games, there’ll be something for all the family to get involved with.

White River Place will also be involved with the town-wide Festive Treasure Trail – come and track down the gargoyles hidden in the shop windows, and once you’ve found as many as you can enter into the

grand draw, with a top prize of £100* in cash up for grabs.

With so much going on and so many great bargains to be found, Christmas at White River Place will be truly magical.

White River Place is getting into the festive spirit with a packed programme of family friendly events and fantastic shopping to help you find the perfect presents for all of your loved ones this Christmas.

The seasonal fun kicks off with the Torchlight Carnival on Saturday 16 November – during the day a torch making workshop will be hosted by Ways with Willow in the Eden Café; the popular Italian Market will be returning to join the regular Saturday market stalls in Aylmer Square, and there’ll be all the fun of the fair with tea cup rides, swing boats, a bouncy castle, donuts and candy floss.

Be sure to keep an eye out for Aylmer, the White River Rabbit, as you watch the parade wind its way through town in the evening, before heading to the live music stage in Aylmer Square. The stage will feature local bands and choirs with a headline performance by Irish folk band the Bell Jars.

Christmas officially begins on Tuesday 26 November with the town-wide Christmas Lights Switch On, and White River Place will be joining in the festivities with the Christmas tree going up and an evening of entertainment to coincide with the first week of late night shopping.

Every Tuesday from 26 November until 17 December the shops at White River Place will

be staying open until 8pm so you can grab some festive bargains, with lots of activities going on around the centre to keep you entertained while you shop. Expect carol singing, live music, festive food and drink, local arts and crafts and Christmas themed activities for children and adults to enjoy.

Get into the spirit of giving this year, with the new White River Place Giving Tree – add your own personalised decoration to the Christmas Tree in Aylmer Square and support White River Place’s chosen charity, the Merlin MS Centre.

Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a trip to see Santa, and this year St Austell’s Santa will be based in White River Place, in the unit next door to the O2 store. From Friday 29 November, children can visit Santa in his grotto and tell him what’s on their Christmas lists this year.

As the big day gets closer even more festive fun will be happening at White River Place, as the 12 days of Christmas countdown begins on Friday 13 December.
