2013 Journey West Itineraries

10-Day Alaska by Land June 1-10, 2013 DAY 1 Fly to Anchorage. Your greeter will arrange your shuttle to the hotel. Overnight: Springhill Suites by Marriott University Lake, Anchorage, AK (2 nights). DAY 2 The highlight of our tour of Anchorage will be the Alaska Native Heritage Center, which we will tour with a native Alaskan Guide. A visit to the Ulu Factory and some free time in downtown Anchorage will also be included in our day’s activities. After dinner on your own, we need to turn in early for our next day’s events. Meal Included: Breakfast. DAY 3 Rise and shine (not hard when you are in the land of the midnight sun) so we can catch the Alaska Railroad’s Gold Star train to Seward. According to all of the local folks, this is by far the most scenic of all of the routes on the railroad! The half day journey will take us through mountains and by water and give us a chance to view some of Alaska’s wildlife from our dome car. Upon arrival in Seward after lunch on your own, we will visit the amazing Alaska Sea Life Center as an introduction to this part of Alaska – the Kenai Peninsula. We will then travel across the Kenai to the town of Homer, Alaska – the end of the road, literally, for a two night stay. We will enjoy a dinner together this evening. Overnight: Ocean Shores Inn, Homer, AK (2 nights). Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner. DAY 4 This day is for you to plan. There are many optional adventures that you can take or simply do a little beach combing and walk among the quaint shops on the Homer Spit. Take an airplane ride to view the volcanic mountains and possibly see Alaskan brown bears; try your hand at sea kayaking; take a passenger catamaran to the historic native Alaskan village of Seldovia; go fishing with a local guide; take a water taxi around Kachemak Bay; take the ferry to Halibut Cove for lunch or dinner; or just sit and enjoy the local color in the Salty Dawg Saloon. Many of the options must be booked with us by the end of February or early March. Our tour coach and guide will be available to help you plan and implement a truly Alaskan day. Meal Included: Breakfast. DAY 5 Leaving Homer behind, we will travel to the old Russian village of Kasilof on our way to Girdwood and the Alyeska Resort. There is plenty of shopping in the resort and the village, as well as hiking trails and of course the aerial tram to the top of Mt. Alyeska in the Chugach Mountains, 2303 feet above sea level. If you plan on dinner at the Seven Glacier Restaurant, the tram is free. Check out the Alaska candle factory and the Alaska Jade Factory says Alaska local, Doug. He also likes the Bake Shop for a hearty bread and soup dinner at the Alyeska Resort, tonight’s overnight. Overnight: Alyeska Resort, Girdwood, AK (1 night). Meal Included: Breakfast. DAY 6 Ever wish you could have your own yacht? Well, today your dream will sort of come true as we board our chartered boat for a once in a lifetime private cruise of Prince William Sound! As we glide across the Sound we will visit Meares Glacier, Columbia Glacier and watch for fantastic Alaskan wildlife along the way. This 9 hour tour will have narration along the way, lunch and a warm snack. Definitely bring your binoculars and zoom lenses for your cameras. A harbor side hotel in Valdez will be our home for the night as we are “hugged” by the Chugach Mountains that surround the area. Overnight: Best Western Harbour View, Valdez, AK (1

night). Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Snack. DAY 7 All aboard our motorcoach for a day long journey through some of Alaska’s most spectacular interior scenery. We travel the Richardson Highway that took so many miners to the gold fields and go past America’s largest national park, Wrangell-St Elias National Park (there are no paved roads into the park). Then, we turn onto the Glenn Highway which travels between the Talkeetna and Chugach mountains via the Copper Valley to Wasilla for our overnight. There will be plenty of picture stops along the way and a stop at the Wrangell-St. Elias Visitor’s Center. Overnight: Best Western Lake Lucille Inn, Wasilla, AK (1 night). Meal Included: Breakfast. DAY 8 After breakfast we head to a not so wild animal attraction, the Musk Ox Farm, one of the only such farms in the world. These fuzzy beasties were almost hunted to extinction in the early 1900’s. Here they are preserved and their wool is gathered for weaving into qiviut wool products. Qiviut is warmer and softer than wool. After seeing the new crop of babies, we continue our travels north to Alaska’s most famous national park, Denali! Before we check into our cabins for the next two nights, we will be treated to a jet boat tour into the Alaskan bush with narration by locals who know what it takes to survive in this climate of extremes. The three hour boat tour makes stops for animal sightings and cultural spots. Overnight: Denali River Cabins, Healy, AK near Denali National Park (2 nights). Meal Included: Breakfast. DAY 9 Today we head deep into Denali National Park to really experience the vastness and grandeur of this crown jewel of America. We will be served lunch at the end of the road in the Kantishna Road House and have a snack on the way back to our cabins. The bus driver is also our guide and naturalist and will help point out the sights and animals along the way. You will also have the opportunity to pan for gold at Kantishna.
