    By Bethnay Bella

On the morning of Monday,April 15, 2013, the United States of

    America was maliciously attacked.

During the nal stretch of the

    2013 annual Boston Marathon,

    twin bombs exploded near the

    nish line, leaving three persons

dead and over 180 others injured.

    Among the deceased, eight-year-

    old Martin Richard of Dorchester,

    29-year-old Krystle Campbell

of Medford, and Lu Lingzi, Chi-

    nese Boston University graduate

    student. Many of the individuals

caught in the blast were rushed

    to local hospitals, suffering from

    severe arm and leg amputations,

while a reported 17 spectators and

    runners remained in critical condi-

    tion.

    The ensuing twenty-four hours

that followed the Boston bombingleft millions of American citizens

in a state of mass confusion. The

FBI rushed on the scene and imme-diately began their investigation,

but much about the initial attack

was left unknown for quite a few

    days.

    Soon af-

    ter the attack

    occurred along

    Americas

    East Coast ,

    the FBI agents

    uncovered thesource of the

    explosions,

    two bombs

    fashioned from

    debris-lled

    pressure cook-

ers stuffed in black bags at a mere

100 yards apart. The bombs were

    supposedly loaded with nails and

metal BBs, or small pellets foundin amateur BB guns. The culprit

    and motive behind the attack,

    though, remained un-

    answered.

    For four days,

    America remained

    in a state of disarray.

    President Obama

    visited the grieving

    city on Thursday, April

18, while the federalagents continued their

    search for Americas

    latest terrorist threat.

    A cowardly and hei-

    nous act, Obama said,

    addressing the crowds

    of Boston. An act of

    terrorism.

Finally, after anxious anticipa-tion, the alleged Boston Marathon

attacker was revealed to the general

    public. Captured by FBI agents

on Friday, April 19 in Watertown,

    Massachusetts, 19-year-old Dz-

hokhar Tsarnaev was taken from a

tarp-covered boat with two gun-shot wounds in the neck and leg.

As of late April 2013, Tsarnaev

has remained sedated in the Beth

    Israel Deaconess Medical Center

    and placed under critical condi-

    tion. Guards have been heavily

    surrounding the suspected terrorist,

and he will be detained until his

    hearing on May 30, 2013.

    Both Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his

brother, the late 26-year-old Tamer-lan Tsarnaev, are the two suspects

charged with the attack on the Unit-

ed States of America. Of Chechehn

    descent, an ethnic group presiding

in the former Russian territory of

    Krygyzstan, the Tsarnaev brothers

    lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts

for a number of years before the

    attack; the detained Dzhokhar is

    even a registered American citi-

zen. Close relations claim that the

    brothers felt alienated from Amer-

ica society, a complaint that could

have led to pent-up frustration and

    anger against America.

However, as of April 29, 2013,no motive for the Boston bombing

    has been revealed. The sedated

Dzhokhar may be the only link to

    the explanation behind the attack.

We are hoping, for a host of rea-

    sons, that the suspect survives,

    Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick

said, because we have a million

    questions, and those questions

    need to be answered.

    Gahanna Cross Country team

    members, some even Boston Mar-

athon hopefuls one day, do not

    feel at all intimidated by

    the placement

    and occurrence

    of the attack

    being at a

    running

    event.

    Myfeelings

    toward

    the

    mara-

    thon did not

    change at all.

    [The bombing]

    was not an at-

    tack on the Bos-

    ton Marathon,

    but an attack

    on America.

    It could havehappened at any

    large event,

    freshman Cross

    Country runner

    Bryce Redman

    said.

    Fellow team

    member Duke

    Durant feels

    similar to his co-runner, con-

    cerning the prospect of running

at large marathons, as well. I

dont think the attack will deter

    me from running any

    marathon. [However,]

if I feel there is a real

    threat of danger, I

    wouldnt put myself

    in harms way, soph-

    omore Duke Durant

    said.The Boston Mara-

    thon attack continues

    to remain an incred-

    ulous mystery to the

    American public.

Authority gures hope the trial of

    captive Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will

shed some light on the incentives

    and explanations behind this vi-

    cious attack.
