LAST GAME

Thursday, February 18, 2021 – NY Rangers 3, Flyers 2 (SO) at Wells Fargo Center: Joel Farabee tied the game during a goalmouth scramble with

1:14 to play, but the Rangers took the shootout and the extra point in the first meeting of the season between the teams. Nicolas Aube-Kubel opened

the scoring just 59 seconds into the contest, giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead that held until Chad Blackwell tipped home a shot on the power play 3:24 into

the second. Brendan Smith put the Rangers ahead 8:21 into the third period, but with an extra attacker on in the waning minutes, the Flyers forced

overtime when Farabee pushed a puck over the line. Artemi Panarin and Kappo Kakko tallied in the shootout for the Rangers, while Sean Couturier

was the only one of three Flyers shooters to beat Aleksander Georgiev after the netminder made 20 saves in regulation and overtime. Carter Hart took

the SOL with 31 saves. Stars of the Game: 1 – Artemi Panarin; 2 – Joel Farabee; 3 – Nicolas Aube-Kubel.

The Flyers returned to action for the first time since February 7 vs. Washington and were missing six regulars due to COVID protocol.  They were

outshot 33-22, but they had 38 shot attempts not reach the net (27 blocked, 11 missed) and had 60 shot attempts to the Rangers’ 57.

Joel Farabee scored a goal and led the Flyers with both four shots on goal and eight total shot attempts. He played a career-high 21:18, more than two

minutes past his previous career high of 19:05 set on 11/7/19 vs. Montreal.

Ivan Provorov played 27:38, taking seven shot attempts and blocking three shots. He is averaging 26:07 per game on the season, which is third-most in

the NHL.

Michael Raffl played a career-high 20:33, surpassing his previous high of 18:58 from Dec. 19, 2016 vs. Nashville.

Sean Couturier took 28 faceoffs, winning 13 and losing 15. It ties for the second-most faceoffs he’s ever taken in a game, coming behind 29 he took on

Dec. 28, 2013 at Edmonton, which was also the last he took 28 or more draws in a single game.

Maksim Sushko made his NHL debut, playing 5:55 and registering one hit.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

This is the second time in as many seasons that the Flyers have played a neutral site game. They did so at the start of the 2019-20 season when they

defeated Chicago 4-3 at O2 Arena in Prague, Czech Republic.

Page 21: Boston Bruins Game Notes - cms.nhl.bamgrid.com

The Flyers are 8-3-3 for 19 points through their first 14 games. It’s the 17th time the Flyers have had at least that many points through 14 games, but the

first since they went 9-4-0-1 for 19 points through the first 13 games of the 2010-11 season.

The Flyers are averaging the fewest shots per game in the league at 23.6, which is nearly three fewer shots than any other team. Despite that, the

Flyers are scoring 3.43 goals per game, which ranked sixth in the league heading into Saturday night’s games.

Flyers captain Claude Giroux saw his consecutive game streak come to an end at 328 games due to his stay on the NHL COVID protocol list. This will

be only the 18th game Giroux has missed since joining the Flyers on a full-time basis on December 26, 2008.  He has appeared in 900 of a possible 917

games since then.

Giroux had appeared in every game for the club since the start of the 2016-17 season, with his last absence coming in the final game of the 2015-16

season on April 10, 2016. Already this season, Giroux has passed Bob Clarke for most games played as Flyers captain (611) and has become the third

player in franchise history to appear in 900 games for the club, joining Clarke (1144) and Bill Barber (903).

With Jake Voracek also among the Flyers on the COVID protocol list, Thursday’s game was the first time in just under 12 years that the Flyers took the

ice with neither Giroux nor Voracek in the lineup. The last time that happened before Thursday was March 1, 2009 at New Jersey, which came while

Giroux was on his final AHL loan to the then-Philadelphia Phantoms. One of the two players had appeared in 889 games the Flyers had played between

then and Thursday.

With Giroux’s absence, Ivan Provorov now solely holds the sixth-longest active streak in the NHL at 329 games. Provorov also has appeared in every

game since the start of the 2016-17 season, his rookie campaign, Per NHL Stats and Information, Provorov today will tie an NHL record for the most

consecutive games played by a defenseman from the start of a career for the same team. Dan Girardi appeared in his first 330 games for the New York

Rangers from January 2007 through January 2011.

Scott Laughton’s hat trick on Feb. 7 was the Flyers’ third of the season through just 13 games. The only other time in franchise history that’s happened

was in the 1984-85 season, when Brian Propp and Illka Sinisalo each had a hat trick in a 13-2 win over Vancouver on 10/18/84 (game 4) and Tim Kerr

followed up with a four-goal game on 10/25/84 vs. St. Louis (game 8). The franchise record for four hat tricks is 17 games during the 1994-95 season,

when the team registered three hat tricks in the first 16 games (Josef Beranek, John LeClair, Eric Lindros) before LeClair added a fourth in game 17.

The Flyers haven’t had more than four hat tricks in any season since 2007-08, when they had seven.

James van Riemsdyk has seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points through the first 14 games. At the time of the Flyers’ season pause, that was good

for fourth in the NHL in scoring; entering last night’s games, van Riemsdyk ranked T-13th. He continues to sit in a tie for second in the NHL with five

power play goals. van Riemsdyk enters tonight’s contest with 499 career points.

Ivan Provorov is averaging 26:00 of ice time per game this season, which ranks third in the NHL. He has two goals and five assists for seven points,

and has picked up three of those assists on the power play.

Maxim Sushko made his NHL debut Thursday night, becoming the first native of Belarus to appear in a game for the Flyers. Sushko was a fourth-round

pick of the Flyers in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and is in his second professional season after appearing in 53 games for the Flyers’ AHL affiliate, the

Lehigh Valley Phantoms, last year. He started this season on loan to Dinamo Minsk in the KHL, where he had two goals and three assists for 30 points.

He became the third member of the Flyers’ 2017 draft class to appear in a game for the team, joining Nolan Patrick and Morgan Frost.
