It seems incredible that yet again a blizzard watch is in effect as I write the April letter! Hopefully real spring is not too far off!

We are all still abuzz about our night with Bill Brett. He is enchanting and engaging – I think he made a connection with everyone he talked to. Even our favorite Newton Marriott waitress left clutching one of his books – she confided to me at the end of the night she lingered pouring coffee just to hear the end of his wonderful tales. Clearly Bill makes the connection between the people of Boston and the greatness of our city and its history.

On February 28th we were honored to honor one of our own. Kim Gazzola received the F. Gorham Brigham award, which prompted Mike Simons, last year’s award winner, to reward her with his own sonnet! Make sure you read his “ode to Kim” in this newsletter!

April is our annual academic awards dinner where we give out scholarships to incredibly talented, deserving juniors studying finance, accounting or business at area colleges and universities. Join us on April 23rd when we honor them and have Roger Brown, CEO of the Berklee School of Music as our speaker. Roger brings incredible world experience to a local music institution (Berklee graduates have won over 250 Grammy awards!!) Armed with a degree in Physics, he taught math in Kenya, spearheaded famine relief in South Sudan for Save the Children, and then came home to found Bright Horizons, which he led for 16 years. And make sure you register for our annual CFO gala on April 3rd at the Newton Marriott! It is free to members, and will feature the “ultimate tailgating challenge” with 9 other organizations participating, including the Treasurers’ Club, Boston Women in Finance, TMANE, CFO Roundtable, IMA, NAPA, NAAAP, ALFPA and Conexion. And on April 8th we have our career management program “Managing your Job Search” at Robert Half ’s offices – parking is free at One International Place.

Happy spring and I know we all look forward to seeing green grass soon!

When Berklee College of Music President Roger H. Brown assumed his post at the college in 2004, he brought a rich palette of professional and life expe-riences to the job. Skills accrued playing recording sessions as a drummer in New York, administering United Nations humanitarian operations in Southeast Asia and Africa, and founding a company with his wife that became a corporation valued at over $1 billion and employing 19,000 people have contributed to his effective leadership at the world’s largest college of contemporary music. Music has been a recurring theme

in Brown’s diverse pursuits. He played drums with bands throughout high school, at Davidson College, and during his graduate studies at Yale, and still leads a band. Brown spent five years engaged in humanitarian work teaching math in Kenya and administering successful humanitarian undertakings in Southeast Asia and in Sudan. The Land Bridge operation Brown and his wife Linda Mason managed in the 1980s was the largest famine relief program attempted to date, and averted starvation for countless Cambodians. Innovative work Brown and Mason undertook a few years later in Sudan for the Save the Children Federation saved an estimated 20,000 lives. In each location Brown sought opportuni-ties to make music with local artists and engage them in the humanitarian efforts.

In 1986, Brown and Mason launched Bright Horizons, a corporation now valued at over $1 billion and employing 16,000 people, to provide quality child care and early education to the children of working parents. Brown and Mason built and oversaw the operation of numerous facilities at universities, hospitals, and corporations around the U.S. and the U.K. Brown utilized his musical talents at the company to write, produce, and perform on six CDs of children’s music that featured Ziggy Marley, Vinx, Raffi, and others. For their groundbreaking work at Bright Horizons, Brown and Mason received several awards, including the President’s Ron Brown Award for Corporate Leadership and the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

In 2004, Brown became Berklee’s third president. Under his direction the college has successfully completed a $50 million capital campaign and established presidential scholars and Africa scholars programs to bring the world’s best young musicians to Berklee. He has led in developing a more selective admissions policy that has raised the level of entering students. Under his auspices, Berklee created a model advising

program to support new students. Brown has overseen the expansion of the City Music Program to reach eco-nomically disadvantaged urban youth across America. As well, Brown has facilitated the expansion of Berklee’s campus facilities, instituted semester-abroad programs, and partnered with the city of Valencia, Spain to open a Berklee satellite campus in Valencia.

Brown sums up his aspirations for Berklee: “Berklee has produced artists who have won more than 200 Grammy

Awards, composed some of the great film scores of our time, written jazz and rock standards, and transformed the way people play their instruments and teach contem-porary music. We have the opportunity to help train the next generation of leading artists, music entrepreneurs, and teachers.”

This seminar provides a holistic understanding of what a person needs to prepare, and to do, to effectively “go to market” and maximize their chance of getting hired. We will explore ideas, tools, and tactics that lead to new career options. We will cover how to develop a value proposition along with branding, messaging and targeting. Participants will learn how to effectively engage the market (and be engaging!) and help others serve as endorsers during the job search process. They will also gain advice on enhancing their visibility, increasing referrals and expanding their contacts through social media, business, social and volunteer events.

kiM gaZZola - 2014 f. gorhaM BrighaM award reCiPieNtKim Gazzola was an obvious and unanimous choice for the F. Gorham Brigham Jr. Award this year. In the several years since she was President of the Chapter, she has served selflessly for the benefit of others. She has served as a FERF Trustee, becoming Chair of FERF for two years. Additionally, she has consulted with not-for-profit organizations, quietly donating her

time and expertise, most recently for a charter school in the western suburbs. Behind the scenes, she has made many contributions, including our Chapter’s by-laws. Gorham Brigham was extremely delighted to hear of her nomination, and concurred that Kim is the most worthy recipient for the 2014 Award. Our own Mike Simons penned a sonnet to Kim in her honor that says it all:

A Sonnet for Kim

Knowing you would be the easy choice,In honoring Gorham’s legacy, it’s youMay we all now proclaim in single voiceThat this award is placed where it is due

O’er many years, we saw your service shined.Behind the scenes, you do things ‘cause they’re right. Each year this prize has become redefinedO now, this time we shine your deeds in light

Unseen you have helped others be their best.Round this room we’ve all seen that this is true.Because you’ve aided us more than we guessedEach one of us had high goals to pursue.

So lift a glass and celebrate with KimTo her our cups are filled unto the brim.

As FEI Boston’s Academic Awards night approaches, on April 23rd, we would like to share the successes of two past recipients and the impact FEI Boston has had on them.

STEPHANIE DEHNING GRIMM, PH.D., CFA - 1999 AWARD RECIPIENT, BOSTON UNIVERSITYThe Twin Cities chapter sent a note to Boston Chapter President Karen Edlund about one of our past award recipients. “Hello Karen, We have a great story to share regarding your Boston academic scholarships. Last week we had Dr. Julie Sullivan, the first women president of the University of St Thomas (local B School,Law School & Liberal Art) be our key-note speaker. We had the business school Dean invite their FEI qualified faculty. One of those professors was Stephanie Dehning Grimm, Ph.D., CFA who sent them the following note after the meeting.

It was a pleasure meeting you both at the FEI meeting held at the University of St. Thomas in January. FEI is a great organization, which I have known about since college. I was awarded a Financial Executives Institute Scholarship from the Boston Chapter in April of 1999. At the time, I was a Junior at Boston University’s School of Management. Feel free to pass that information along to the Boston president. Let her know I made good use of the scholarship - I earned my undergraduate degree in Finance from BU, worked in finance consulting, earned the CFA designation and then went on to earn a PhD in Accounting from the University of Minnesota. I now teach in both the undergraduate and graduate programs at the University of St. Thomas and I truly love my job. It was fun to connect with the FEI group in January. Thank you for your work with FEI!” KAREN HOGLE – 1993 AWARD RECIPIENT, SUFFOLK UNIVERSITYKaren Hogle, received her academic scholarship as a student at Suffolk University in 1993.

Upon her graduation from Suffolk in 1994, Karen worked at KPMG for four years. From there, became VP of Finance for Hougton Mifflin, where she served for several years. Karen is currently the Director of Revenue Assurance & Benefits at Granite Tele-communications in Quincy. In this role she manages a number of departments includ-ing Revenue Assurance, Product Pricing, Payroll & Benefits and Granite University (the company’s training department). Karen fondly remembers her award and the value of FEI in making a difference in her future. “The FEI award was a wonderful honor. It is something that I still remember 20 years later and I am proud to be a current member.”

Karen is currently an FEI Boston member and additionally, she serves as a member of Diversity Committee.
