BOSTON COLLEGE vs. VERMONTVermont returns to Kelley Rink for the Hockey East quarterfinals, marking the second time in three seasons, starting Friday, March 13. In those previous meetings, Boston College swept the Catamounts off The Heights with respective scores of 4-2 and 4-1 on March 15 and March 16, 2013. The Eagles are unblemished in their six Hockey East playoff encounters against UVM. BC knocked off Vermont four times in the quarterfinals (2013, 2006), shut out Vermont in the 2010 Hockey East semifinal (3-0) and came away with the Hockey East Tournament title in 2008 with another blanking of Vermont, 4-0. Vermont remains the only team the Eagles have faced in posteason play where Boston College remains undefeated. In this season’s previous encounters on Feb. 13-14, 2015, the Catamounts tripped up BC in the series opener in overtime, 3-2. That victory curbed Boston College’s 11-game unbeaten streak against UVM that had stretched back to Nov. 13, 2010. It was also Vermont’s first victory at Kelley Rink since Nov. 15, 2009. It was also Vermont’s second-only triumph in Chestnut Hill since joining Hockey East. All-time at Kelley Rink, Boston College is 16-2. In the overall series, the Eagles hold a 36-13-5 record with a 24-7-3 total in Hockey East play.

CATAMOUNT CALLThe Catamounts earned their spot in the Hockey East quarterfinals by ousting Maine in the first round of the playoffs at home in a best-of-three series. The Black Bears took Vermont the distance as Jonathan Turk was the Catamounts’ hero by netting the game-winning overtime goal in the decisive game three on Sunday evening. Since splitting the BC series on Feb. 13-14, Vermont has posted a 3-2-2 mark, including the previous playoff series with Maine. Vermont had a very hot start to the season, skating to a 14-3-1 start and a 7-3-1 mark in conference play before running into an eight-game stretch (Dec. 29 – Jan. 31) where UVM could scrap together one victory. Much like the Eagles, Vermont is a 20-win club and touts its 20-13-4 record into Friday’s game and has been recast as the No. 6 seed in the tournament as finished seventh, overall, in the league with a 10-9-3 conference mark. Senior defenseman Mike Paliotta continues to tear it up for Vermont and is the team’s leading point scorer with nine tallies and 26 assists and is ranked 51st, overall, in the country with 0.95 ppg. Amongst all defensemen in college hockey, Paliotta’s scoring rate ranks fifth in the nation. Sophomore forward Brady Shaw is the team’s leading goal scorer with 16 thus far and is tied for 36th in the country with 0.47 gpg. Seven of those goals have come via the power play as his is tied for 10th in the country in PPGs. Vermont has employed a two-goaltender system as Brody Hoffman has pieced together the 11th-best win-loss total of 11-5-2 (.667) in the nation while Mike Santaguida has been a worthy compliment. Along with his 9-8-2 record, Santaguida’s 1.93 goals against average ranks seven in the country and his .927 save percentage stands as 14th-best in college hockey. Hoffman and Santaguida buddy up to backstop the country’s 12th-stingiest defense that allows only 2.22 goals per game. Offensively, the Catamounts are averaging 2.78 goals per game which is 28th best in the nation. Vermont has prided itself on being the fourth-least penalized team in college hockey, averaging only 8.9 PIMs per game. The Catamounts’ power play ranks 16th (20.6 percent) while the penalty kill has been second-best in Hockey East and seventh best, overall (88.2 percent).

BU’s Jack Parker is second with seven. York is 52-15-1 (.772) in 65 conference postseason contests. Boston College has advanced to the semifinal round of the league tournament in 10-of-15 seasons overall under York. The Eagles also own the most Hockey East championship appearances in league history with 16.

POSTSEASON SEEDINGBoston College will be the No. 3 seed in the Hockey East Tournament for the fourth time and first time since 2006 when the Eagles played Vermont in the quarterfinals for the first time. As a No. 3 seed, the Eagles have amassed a 10-2 record and made it to the Hockey East Championship on three occasions in the slot, winning the title in 1999 in a 5-4 win against New Hampshire in overtime.

ALL WE DO IS WIN – WIN - WINWith a 20-11-3 mark heading into the playoffs, BC has locked up another winning season. In its 93 seasons of varsity hockey, BC had totaled 74 winning seasons for a winning percentage of 80 percent. It’s the 18th-straight winning season under Jerry York. With the Feb. 27th victory at Notre Dame, the Eagles have won 20 games in six-consecutive seasons, tying Jerry York’s streak of six-straight 20-win seasons starting in 2002-03 and concluding in 2007-08. Under York’s guidance, the Eagles have already posted 20 wins on 15 occassions.

SHOOTING GALLERYIn the regular season finale at Notre Dame on Feb. 28, the Eagles logged 56 shots on net. That total marked the highest Eagle shot aggregate in almost seven years. Boston College has not posted that many shots on net since the 2008 Hockey East semifinals on March 21, 2008, when BC clipped New Hampshire, 5-4, in triple overtime. The Eagles posted 67 shots that game.

NO LUCK FOR THE IRISHBefore Thatcher Demko’s 35-save shutout on Feb. 27 at Notre Dame, Boston College’s last shutout took place at home against UMass Lowell on Feb. 11, 2014 in a 3-0 victory. The Eagles’ last shutout on the road occurred after Thatcher Demko stopped 30 shots at Providence on Jan. 31, 2014. Demko now has three-career blankings, while the Feb. 27 performance was his first of the season.

OVERTIME OH YEAH!Ryan Fitzgerald’s overtime game-winning goal against Harvard on Feb. 23 marked the first OT victory for BC in six tries. The last time BC won a game in overtime was Adam Gilmour’s walk-off goal at Northeastern on Nov. 2, 2013. The last time the Eagles won an overtime game at home was on Feb. 26, 2010, against UMass.

SENIOR SCHWANN SONGThe senior class of Brad Barone, Brian Billett, Danny Linell, Michael Sit, Quinn Smith, Cam Spiro and Destry Straight played in their last regular season game as Eagles at Kelley Rink on Friday night. This group enters the playoffs with 103 victories, including one NCAA championship (2012), two Hockey East regular season titles, one Hockey East Tournament championship and three Beanpot trophies. These Eagles have never won less than 22 games in a season. This senior class has seen the most victories of any other class in all of college hockey.

Calgary Flames rookie and former Boston College Hobey Baker Award winner Johnny Gaudreau headed to Columbus, Ohio, on Jan. 23-25 for the NHL All-Star Weekend.

Gaudreau has 15 goals and 45 points this year, which is second amongst all NHL rookies. The winger is one of six rookies who participated in the NHL All-Star Skills Competition on Jan. 24.

Gaudreau replaced an injured Sidney Crosby and played in the NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 25 in Columbus. Gaudreau registered a pair of assists.

Johnny also made headlines on Jan. 12, 2015, after applying for a trademark for the name “Johnny Hockey”, TSN first reported.

“We were concerned that people were going to abuse the Johnny Hockey name, coming out with Johnny Hockey shirts and stuff and we wanted to make sure that did not occur,” Lewis Gross, Gaudreau’s agent, told TSN. “We felt that Johnny was going to be a special player and if he takes off the way we felt he could, he has the potential to have endorsement opportunities that could be very valuable.”

BCNumbersGameCoaches that are Boston College hockey alums – Jerry York, Greg Brown and Marty McInnis. All three have been inducted into Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in six seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

NCAA Championships in the last 13years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Boston College has competed in five of the last nine national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).

Frozen Four appearances in the last 17 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (11), North Dakota (eight), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five) and Michigan State (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.

Freshman forward Alex Tuch was selected by the Minnesota Wild (18th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 15th Eagle in the last 27 years to have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves(29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010) and Michael Matheson(23rd, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Freshmen Noah Hanifin and Alex Tuch and incoming freshmen joined Thatcher Demko and Ian McCoshen as members of the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Canada. This group became the 25th, 26th and 27th Eagle participants in World Junior play under head coach Jerry York, joining Jeff Farkas (1996, 1997, 1998), Marty Reasoner (1996, 1997), Blake Bellefuille (1997), Brian Gionta (1998, 1999), Mike Mottau (1998), Bobby Allen (1998), Brooks Orpik (2000), J.D. Forrest (2001), Ben Eaves (2002), Chuck Kobasew (Canada; 2002), Patrick Eaves (2003, 2004), Ryan Shannon (2003), Dan Bertram (Canada; 2006, 2007), Cory Schneider (2005, 2006), Nathan Gerbe (2006, 2007), Jimmy Hayes (2009), Chris Kreider (2010, 2011), Brian Dumoulin (2011), Patrick Wey (2011), Bill Arnold (2012), Johnny Gaudreau (2013) and Steve Santini (2014).

Former Eagles saw NHL action in 2013-14; the most of any program in college hockey. Wisconsin had the second most alums with 21 last season.

NCAA Tournament victories in the last 17 years. That win total is 18 victories more than Michigan, which has totaled 20 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have amassed the most victories in college hockey. Boston College has amassed 474 victories and is only one of three programs to have recorded more than 400 victories during that span. Michigan (468) and North Dakota (462) trail by a slim margin.

Upon completion of the 2013-14 season, Boston College reclaimed the best overall winning percentage in Hockey East history. Over the course of 30 seasons in league play, the Eagles’ winning percentage of .630 (455-252-76) reigns supreme in one of college hockey’s top conferences.

Jerry York’s overall record is 983-588-105 in 42 seasons as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division I coach in the history of college hockey. York is 34-11 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 39 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.

The $5M commitment permanently attached the Schiller Family to a position and a leader they feel is so important to BC. Admiring the standards off the ice as much as on, Phil cited his respect and enjoyment in watching Jerry York run the program. In recognition of Jerry’s accomplishments and to ensure that the future of BC remains strong for years to come, the Schillers decided to permanently etch their legacy with BC Hockey.
