boston college men’sTHE BUBBLE

boston college soccer • 35

Each year the bubble is erected at theend of November and stays inflated untilthe end of March. Facility hours are 7a.m. to 11 p.m.

"When the bubble was first built, wethought it would be a useful tool in ouroff-season workouts. But we never expect-ed it to help as much as it has," head coach

The Bubble

In any season, Boston College stu-dent-athletes are able to take advantage ofthe best in practice facilities thanks to"The Bubble”.

The newest of Boston College's athlet-ic facilities, the bubble can handle all facetsof the soccer team's off-season training reg-imen. The facility houses strength andconditioning workouts and scrimmages forthe soccer team.

Erected in December of 1998, thebubble cost approximately $2 million. Thestructure measures 360' x 210' and is 70'tall, covering the entire football field andextending a few feet beyond the endzonesand sidelines.

The bubble usually takes four hours toinflate and is wired for electrical power. Itis heated and can reach 72 degreesFahrenheit, though is usually kept at 55degrees Fahrenheit.

Special features of the bubble includea wind sensor to stabilize the frame whenhigh wind gusts occur and a snow sensorto automatically raise the temperature onthe exterior of the bubble to melt thesnow.

Ed Kelly says. "Having this weather-proof facility

through the winter also allows the team totrain at the highest level.

"When you have a national-level pro-gram in soccer, you have to compete andtrain year-round. The Bubble enables usdo that now."

boston college soccer • 36

As The BIG EAST Conference entersthe 2002-03 season, only the 24th in itshistory, it takes pride in its long list ofaccomplishments. Providing opportunitiesto excel amongst the nation’s best, bothathletically and academically, continues tobe its mission. There was plenty of evidenceof that mission being accomplished duringthe 2001-02 season. The BIG EAST had undefeated nationalchampions in football and women’s basketball, 32 student-athleteswho earned Academic All-America honors, and two student- ath-letes who were named the national player of the year in theirsports.

Miami won the Rose Bowl to cap a perfect 12-0 season for itsfifth national title and second for the league. The Connecticutwomen’s basketball team garnered its third national title with arecord-setting 39-0 mark. That national championship gave theConference a three-peat in women’s basketball following theHuskies’ second title in 2000 and Notre Dame’s crown in 2001.BIG EAST teams have won 10 national championships since1995 in six different sports.

UConn’s Sue Bird was the consensus women’s basketball play-er of the year and Erin Elbe of Georgetown was honored with thewomen’s lacrosse player of the year award. The Notre Dame base-ball team became the first conference team to play in the CollegeWorld Series. The BIG EAST was the only conference to haveeight teams compete in the NCAA Women’s SoccerChampionship. The BIG EAST has always been able to boast that some of its beststudents are also some of its best athletes. Notre Dame softballstandout Jarrah Myers, the 2001-02 BIG EAST/AéropostaleFemale Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was honored as theVerizon/CoSIDA Academic All-American Team Member of theYear in addition to earning All-America honors for her accom-plishments on the diamond. For three of the last eight years, a BIGEAST student-athlete has won the Honda-Broderick Cup asCollegiate Woman of the Year. Notre Dame soccer player CindyDaws won in 1997-98. She followed Connecticut basketball play-ers Rebecca Lobo (‘94-95) and Jennifer Rizzotti (‘95-96).

BIG EAST student-athletes have continued their success afterleaving the classrooms and playing fields. Former Connecticutwomen’s basketball standout Dr. Leigh Curl was inducted into theVerizon Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 1999. FormerGeorgetown men’s basketball star Dikembe Mutumbo was nameda winner of the President’s Service Award, the highest honor in theU.S. for volunteer service.Whether it’s the student-athletes or theleague as a whole, moving forward successfully and exploring newhorizons have been the norm rather than the exception for theconference that opened its doors in 1979.Most recently the leaguewelcomed Virginia Tech as its 14th full member in 2000-01. Inthe spring of 2001, the BIG EAST added women’s lacrosse to itsgrowing list of sports and the inaugural women’s golf champi-onship will be held in the spring of 2003.When the 1990s began,The BIG EAST Conference had just completed its eighth seasonwith nine members. The league was arguably as healthy as a con-ference could be. The BIG EAST was a headline-grabber imme-

diately, especially in men’s basketball, itssignature sport. The BIG EAST FootballConference did not exist. The ‘90s was adecade of enormous change in college ath-letics with conferences adding new mem-bers and new leagues beginning. The BIGEAST was no different than most groups. The league has had four separate expan-

sions in the past 11 years. The BIG EAST Football Conference, with eight members, became a major player in college footballimmediately after its inception in 1991.

The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, followinga meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s,Georgetown and Syracuse Universities. Seton Hall, Connecticutand Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. After one season, Villanova was added and began play in 1980-81.Two seasons later, Pittsburgh joined the group and started compe-tition in ‘82-83.Miami was admitted in 1990 and began BIGEAST competition in ‘91-92. Rutgers, West Virginia and NotreDame joined in ‘94 in two separate expansions and began play in1995 96.While the membership has increased, the focus of theBIG EAST remains unchanged. It is a group that reflects a tradi-tion of broad based programs, led by administrators and coacheswho place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. The BIGEAST Conference has enjoyed a leadership role nationally. Itsstudent athletes own significantly high graduation rates and theirrecord of scholastic achievement notably reflect a balance betweenintercollegiate athletics and academics.Any successful consortiumenjoys outstanding leadership. Michael Tranghese, the league’sfirst full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate of DaveGavitt, took over the Commissioner’s reins in June 1990. Theexpansion in membership is only a portion of Tranghese’s achieve-ments. In his first year at the helm, he administered the forma-tion of The BIG EAST Football Conference in addition to coordi-nating the four expansions.BIG EAST sports attract the interest offollowers in the nation’s largest media markets including NewYork, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, D.C., Miami,Pittsburgh and Hartford. The league has long been considered aleader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particu-larly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparal-leled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. Exclusive longrange television contracts with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC provideBIG EAST basketball and football with more television exposure.

While BIG EAST basketball games are regular sellouts atcampus and major public arenas, including the annual BIG EASTChampionship in Madison Square Garden, attendance figures alsoare significant at BIG EAST soccer, women’s basketball and base-ball games.More than 475 BIG EAST athletes have earned AllAmerica recognition and dozens have won individual NCAAnational championships. The BIG EAST has been well represent-ed in U.S. or foreign national and Olympic teams, with severalathletes earning gold medals in the summer Olympiads in Sydneyin 2000, Atlanta in ‘96, Barcelona in ‘92, Seoul in ‘88 and LosAngeles in ‘84.

The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where theconference administers to more than 5,500 athletes in 23 sports.
