Presenting new works by living composers is an essential element to a thriving opera training program. In fact, it’s critical in the survival of the overall art form. I’m thrilled to have joined forces with the New Music Festival here at Boston Conservatory at Berklee in celebrating the music of composer Nico Muhly, whose body of work has already made a profound impact on the musical landscape of our time. New works need champions...as do the composers who write them, singers who interpret them, companies that present them, schools that teach them, and audiences who absorb and embrace them. Never has it been more important for all of us to champion/support/encourage/uplift/uphold/absorb/embrace/put-forth/drive-home new artistic initiatives and innovators.
