hello and welcome to the bso!

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to our new 2015–2016 BSO season!

I strongly believe that music has an essential role in human life: it is food for our souls. This is what drives my passion to support the BSO’s Education and Community Engagement programs. The BSO has an extraordinary history of connecting with individuals of all backgrounds. I find it essential for us to create rich opportunities to introduce new audiences to classical music, starting with our youngest children. I believe in a great future for classical music and, looking at all our young generations, I can clearly see that very bright future.

Alongside my large family of amazing BSO musicians, very generous donors and supporters, and warm audiences, I would like to welcome many new members to my beloved BSO family. I look forward to seeing music lovers of all ages, including many curious new audience members, join our family at Symphony Hall! Boston welcomed me last season as I arrived for my first

season with the BSO, and created a warm community around me. It is my responsibility now to reach out to a larger audience and create a bond with each of you personally.

My hope is that our Education and Community Engagement programs will convey the deep passion and commitment that we feel toward classical music and demonstrate how it is truly food for our souls. We hope your curiosity, paired together with our extraordinary Education and Community Engagement programs, will lead to you becoming newly or more deeply engaged as a BSO family member. Our musical journey will be enriched by your presence.

Bring your friends and children to our programs and the BSO’s concerts, share in the music with us, and be inspired by a new season together!

Andris Nelsons, Ray and Maria Stata Music Director

Dear friends,

Although a somewhat overused phrase, music is indeed the “universal language.” It knows no boundaries of culture, race, religion, or economic status. The point not to be missed however, is that music is a “language”...a communicator...a voice.

Music by its very nature cannot be music if it’s only talked about, written about, or analyzed. Music becomes its very powerful self when it is executed...when it speaks. There is therefore a higher calling, a greater good, if you will, in our efforts to teach and share music with young children and families.

This sharing of the great gift of music is like a gesture of friendship from a new acquaintance. It affords us the chance to know and understand not only each other, but ourselves as well. And as this draws us closer to a truer sense of community, it fosters the opportunity to transform

our hearing into listening, our curiosity into inspiration, and our entertainment into enlightenment.

This is what I love most about our programs, and why I hope you will join us.

Thomas Wilkins, Germeshausen Youth and Family Concerts Conductor

Days in the Arts at Tanglewood (DARTS)The Days in the Arts (DARTS) program is a summer residential program near Tanglewood that provides middle school students with a high-quality arts immersion experience, allowing each student to engage with and create art with their peers in a positive, non-judgmental environment. The program unites students from urban, suburban, and rural communities, seeking to break down barriers and stereotypes by creating a community of mutual respect and understanding. The DARTS philosophy is founded on fostering respect for and interest in each person’s diversity, interests, talents, and individuality. DARTS strives to provide an environment in which students are exposed to the arts and to people from a wide range of backgrounds.

Each summer since 1968 in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, the BSO operates the Days in the Arts residential education program that invites middle school students from across Massachusetts to gather together to explore the arts. DARTS offers students the opportunity to spend five of their summer days immersed in the arts, engaged in intensive arts workshops and to experience a variety of partner cultural organizations throughout the Berkshires.

Concerts for Very Young PeopleIn partnership with the Boston Children’s Museum, the BSO will offer a fourth year of its Concerts for Very Young People—this program brings BSO musicians together with children ages 2-5 and their families for educational, interactive performances. The performances are designed to build initial and direct connections between BSO musicians and these families, offering young children an opportunity to engage with musical experiences of the highest quality, and deepening the BSO’s relationship with the Boston Children’s Museum and the Greater Boston community.

For more information, visit: www.bso.org/concertsforveryyoungpeople

DARTS serves 400 middle school students each summer during eight one-week sessions. Arts workshops are offered in Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Theatre, Dance, and Visual Art and are taught by experienced arts educators who are also professionals in their own field. Each session convenes students from urban, suburban, and rural communities with the intent to create a single community through the arts. While there is a fee attached to the experience, need-based financial assistance is available for families; no student is turned away from DARTS due to an inability to pay.

The 2016 DARTS season will take place from June 27–August 19, 2016. Rising 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students from across Massachusetts are eligible.

For more information regarding the DARTS application process, visit www.bso.org/darts.

BSO Concerto CompetitionSince 1959, the BSO has hosted a Concerto Competition for high school instrumentalists who are at an advanced level in their musical study. The competition recognizes two first-place winners who perform their concerto with the Boston Pops or with the BSO during a BSO Family Concert. The competition is open to sophomore, junior, and senior high school instrumentalists who reside in Massachusetts.

Go to www.bso.org/concertocompetition for more information.

Working With The Masters ProgramThe Working With The Masters program offers student musicians the opportunity to work directly with a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in either a master class or a workshop setting. Visiting bands, orchestras, and choirs are able to perform selections and receive feedback from a BSO musician during a master class. An educational workshop offers non-performing student groups an informational demonstration where a musician will discuss their background, instrument, and what it’s like to be a member of one of the world’s greatest orchestras. A group ticket purchase to a Boston Symphony or Boston Pops regular season performance is required in order to participate in either program.

For additional information, please contact the Group Sales office at 617-638-9345 or [email protected].

Collegiate Ambassadors ProgramThe Collegiate Ambassadors Program is a series of paid opportunities for college students in the Greater Boston area to provide logistical support and assistance to the BSO’s Education and Community Engagement Department in the administration and execution of a variety of its programs over the course of the 2015–2016 concert season. Responsibilities focus on providing general support as needed for events and activities held at Symphony Hall or offsite; participants will be compensated at an hourly rate and with a small travel stipend (as applicable).

Program dates and locations are listed online at www.bso.org/collegiateambassadors.

Applications for participation in this program are due by Friday, September 25, 2015. Those interested in participating must attend an orientation meeting at Symphony Hall on Friday, October 2, 2015 at 4:30pm (specific location TBA). Participants should be over the age of 18 and have flexible schedules allowing them to be available on some evenings and weekends, as well as certain daytime hours. Being able to provide your own transportation is not required but is helpful!

Area music educators, fine arts coordinators, and school administrators were invited to apply to participate on the 2015–2016 council in spring of 2015. Are you a current classroom music educator, fine arts coordinator, or school administrator interested in serving on the council in 2016–2017? Contact [email protected] for more information about the program.

Community Chamber ConcertsBSO Community Chamber Concerts provide high-quality, relevant, and engaging free chamber music concerts performed by BSO musicians in Greater Boston communities limited in access to the BSO by distance or economics. Community Chamber Concerts build personal connections to the BSO and orchestral music, allowing community members to become more deeply engaged with the BSO over time. Each concert program lasts approximately one hour and is followed by a coffee and dessert reception for the audience and musicians.

The 2015–2016 Community Chamber Concert season will include an “artistic exchange” element before four of the ten total Community Chamber Concert performances. These four communities are: Dorchester, Chelsea, Methuen, and Pittsfield. At each of these four community locations, an ensemble of community musicians will be featured in performance from 2:30-2:45, prior to the BSO musicians’ 3:00 performance. This is the fourth year of this expanded effort, which is intended to allow the concert afternoon to represent an “exchange” of performances between the BSO and the community, and to highlight the musical strengths and programs of each community.

For more information, visit www.bso.org/communitychamberconcerts.

BSO Educators Advisory CouncilFor a third year, the BSO has drawn together a BSO Educators Advisory Council. The council is a group of classroom music educators and fine arts administrators drawn from the broad Greater Boston area. In conjunction with the Germeshausen Youth and Family Concerts Conductor and the Manager of Education and Community Engagement, the council is charged with the responsibility of creating the supplementary materials designed for the annual BSO Youth Concerts, ensuring that these materials are of the highest quality and most relevant design. In addition to this primary duty, the committee is called upon to share feedback, field updates, and observations regarding the needs of their districts and schools, which will help the BSO Education and Community Engagement Department to build and sustain the most meaningful possible programs for students and educators from diverse backgrounds.

Each year, up to 12 council members will be chosen through an application process. Each member has the option to serve for a two-year term, and will be given an honorarium for each year that they serve. The council will meet, on average, five times over the course of the academic year and concert season.

Symphony for Our City ProgramThe BSO’s Symphony for Our City program allows the BSO to provide in-depth musical experiences across BSO performance types for local non-profit organizations. This program allows the BSO to build deeper relationships with representatives from a variety of organizations across the Greater Boston area, bringing together individuals of various backgrounds, and informing the BSO’s work through reciprocal relationships.

Each year, the BSO will partner with up to ten community-based organizations in the Greater Boston area through an open application process. Chosen non-profit partners will engage with the BSO throughout the year by attending three types of performance opportunities.

Participants will be asked to attend either a pre- or post-concert educational activity around each designated performance. These activities will be designed to build further engagement with the art form, and to foster an affinity amongst the program constituents. Visit our website for more information about this program at www.bso.org/symphonyforourcity.

Onstage at SymphonyThe BSO’s Onstage at Symphony program convenes amateur musicians of all backgrounds from across Massachusetts for a set of rehearsal experiences culminating in a performance on Symphony Hall’s stage, celebrating their talent and continued commitment to music while also providing them access to the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Hall. This opportunity is intended to build long-term ownership of orchestral music and the BSO, giving community musicians an opportunity to experience a “day-in-the-life” of a professional musician under the leadership of BSO Germeshausen Youth and Family Concerts Conductor, Thomas Wilkins.

Onstage at Symphony is a program designed for adult, Massachusetts amateur musicians who have a true love for musical performance but have pursued alternate career paths. Participants will be selected from a pool of applicants on a lottery basis; the BSO will select enough musicians to constitute a full orchestra fitting of selected repertoire. Chosen participants will attend three rehearsals, and will complete their experience by performing a Saturday afternoon concert on the stage of Symphony Hall. In an effort to reduce barriers to access around the Symphony Hall experience, the final performance of the group will be free and open to the public. Music will be distributed to the participating musicians at least one month prior to the first rehearsal.

The activities of the Onstage at Symphony program will take place at selected times from Monday, October 26 to Saturday, October 31, 2015. The final performance at Symphony Hall is FREE, and will be Saturday, October 31 at 1:30pm. Learn more about the program at www.bso.org/onstageatsymphony.

Kids’ CornerKids’ Corner is designed to provide a child-friendly experience for families attending BSO open rehearsals or concerts on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons at Tanglewood. Located in a grassy area near the Tanglewood Visitors Center, it offers children’s activities that connect to music in a casual, drop-in atmosphere.

Watch and PlayManaged by the Boston Symphony Association of Volunteers, Watch and Play is a free program for children attending the Sunday BSO Concerts at Tanglewood. BSO musicians and local musician ensembles provide opportunities for students to learn about instruments, concert themes, and musical concepts. Watch and Play takes place before select Sunday concerts, running from 1–2pm.

Instrument PlaygroundManaged by the Boston Symphony Association of Volunteers, the Instrument Playground offers children and students an opportunity to see, hear, touch, and play instruments of the orchestra in an effort to deepen their understanding of the orchestra, allow them first-hand contact with orchestral instruments, and to inspire future participation in instrumental music. The Instrument Playground is intended to serve the broad Berkshire community, and often provides a first point of exposure to a wide range of musical instruments.

For more information about the BSO’s Education and Community Engagement Programs at Tanglewood, please contact: [email protected]. Dates for programs will be available in spring, 2016.

Tanglewood Family ConcertThe BSO’s Tanglewood Family Concert provides an engaging and educational orchestral concert experience especially for children ages 3–8 and their families at Ozawa Hall during the Tanglewood season. The Tanglewood Family Concert is designed to build connection to music and to Tanglewood. Performing artists vary from year to year, with a focus on BSO musicians as central to the concert.

Friday Morning Rehearsal Program The BSO’s Friday Morning Rehearsal Program offers a unique opportunity for participants of the BSO’s DARTS program, students, teachers, families, and community groups from the immediate Berkshires area to attend a BSO rehearsal on select Friday mornings during the Tanglewood season. The Friday Morning Rehearsal Program experience is supplemented by an optional pre-rehearsal talk and post-rehearsal tours of Tanglewood for participants, and is intended to offer a first-hand, behind-the-scenes opportunity for groups that call the Berkshires their home throughout the year to experience the BSO on the Tanglewood grounds, building their relationship with the Tanglewood experience as year-round residents and allowing the BSO to give back to the local community. Contact Darlene White, Manager, Berkshire Education and Community Engagement, at [email protected] for more information beginning in the late spring of 2016.

BSO 101: Are You Listening?BSO 101: Are You Listening? returns in 2015–2016, again offering the opportunity to increase your enjoyment of BSO concerts. These six sessions with BSO Director of Program Publications Marc Mandel joined by members of the BSO are designed to enhance your listening abilities and appreciation of music by focusing on upcoming BSO repertoire, examining and illuminating aspects of musical shape and form, and of the composers’ individual musical styles. All of these sessions include recorded musical examples, and each is self-contained, so no prior musical training, or attendance at any previous session, is required. The specific musical works to be discussed will be posted at bso.org.Tuesday, October 13: Surveying the SeasonWednesday, November 11: Contrasting Voices—

Insights SeriesIn conjunction with the BSO's programs marking the Shakespeare anniversary, the BSO will offer an “Insights Series” in collaboration with Harvard Department of Music Professor Thomas Kelly. Established in 2012 with the support of the NEA, the “Insights Series” offers chamber music performances, moderated panel discussions, and film screenings, all designed to deepen audience engagement with BSO repertoire by providing a glimpse into the artistic process of the composers, performers, and conductors involved in the BSO's performances and related programming.Visit www.bso.org/insightsseries for more information about events taking place January 23–February 14.

Friday PreviewsFriday Previews take place from 12:15–12:45pm in Symphony Hall before all of the BSO’s Friday-afternoon subscription concerts throughout the season. Given by BSO Director of Program Publications Marc Mandel, Assistant Director of Program Publications Robert Kirzinger, and occasional guest speakers, these informative half-hour talks incorporate recorded examples from the music to be performed.Friday previews are free with a Friday-afternoon concert ticket. For concert listings, please visit www.bso.org/subscriptions.

New This Season–“Casual Fridays” SeriesWear your favorite casual attire to Symphony Hall for three Friday-evening concerts this season! In addition, this new, lower-priced “Casual Fridays” series includes a free pre-concert reception for all concertgoers, and allows for the use of tablets–provided by the BSO–in a designated area in the rear of the orchestra floor. Patrons who choose to sit in this area can view content such as in-depth information about the conductors and soloists, a scrollable score of the music being performed, and informative notes on the program. The series also includes a post-concert gathering in Higginson Hall with live music, snacks, and a cash bar.
