Introductory courses
Students wishing to learn more about botanical illustration
or brush up on their skills beore beginning the certiicate
sequence can take introductory courses that are not part o
the certiicate requirements: Introduction to Botanical Illus-
tration, Art Materials or the Botanical Illustrator and Intro-
duction to Drawing in Pencil.

Guest WORKSHOPS
Do not miss this unique opportunity to learn how to paint persim-
mon and cabbage (important symbols in its culture) the Chinese
way. Persimmon (Diospyros kaki) is a homophone o things and
business, market and thoughts. The reddish-orange color
o its ruit symbolizes joy. The Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa
var. glabra) is a symbol or honorable rank, purity and unsullied
descent. You will also explore a number o Chinese characters
that make up interesting sayings to go with the persimmon and
cabbage paintings. Writing Chinese characters and painting not
only gives insight into the Chinese culture but can also be a relax-
ing and meditative practice or people o all ages to engage in.
