“You and I do no favour to the worldin withholding our creativity” - RobinSharma

I, along with many other members hadthe opportunity to learn how to be aneffective and engaging leader from worldrenowned leadership expert and authorMr. Sharma at our breakfast event lastOctober. One of the notions that wasreinforced to me during this event, is thatleaders come in all shapes, sizes, and ages.

This issue of “Currents” is dedicated toour leaders of tomorrow. The youngleaders highlighted in this issue are just afew of the many talented young men andwomen in our community who are notwithholding their creativity. Each of themexemplifies many of the leadership skillsRobin Sharma talked about and espousesin his writing.

Several of the young leaders profiledare also past recipients of the Saint JohnBoard of Trade’s Young EntrepreneurAward. This Award is given to a youngindividual, under 30 years old who is theowner/manager of a business, and whohas proficiency as a risk taker, enthusiastic, motivated, creative, original, dedicated, innovative, visionary, and is growthoriented.

To nominate someone you feel deservesto be recognized for our 2011 OutstandingBusiness Achievement Awards, Iencourage you to see our insert in thisissue or visit our website. Remember: It’snever too early to nominate a deservingbusiness or individual!

The Saint John Board of Trade has ahistory of engaging tomorrow’s leadersthrough several programs including ourstudent intern program in partnership withNBCC Saint John, UNBSJ andCompuCollege (now Eastern TradesCollege). This program introducesstudents to our committee environmentand gives them the opportunity to meetand interact with members of the businesscommunity while they are completingtheir studies. In addition, we have a specialmembership rate for students who areinterested in getting involved with theBoard.

This past year we held our firstUnlimited Possibilities Luncheon toprovide Grade 9 students with theinformation on choosing their futurecareers paths. We are presently planningour second luncheon for the Fall, as wellas a workshop for parents on the Plan toAchieve Career Excellence in cooperationwith School Districts 6 and 8.

Another great awards ceremony thatrecognizes our future leaders andentrepreneurs is the Junior AchievementFutures Unlimited Banquet that will beheld on April 5th at the Saint John Tradeand Convention Centre. Each year theSaint John Board of Trade sponsors theCompany of the Year Award.

We have many groups in Saint Johnand the surrounding area that foster youngleaders including Junior Achievement,YMCA-YWCA, FUSION, EnterpriseSaint John, and 21 Inc. I encourage all ofour members to help foster our leaders oftomorrow and encourage their creativityfor they will address the issues oftomorrow and develop the economy oftomorrow.

It was back in November of 2002 whenEnterprise Saint John partnered withACOA, the Provincial Department of PostSecondary Education and Labour and theCommunity Economic Development Fundto begin a youth entrepreneurship programcalled Emerging Entrepreneurs. Theprogram’s mandate was to help out ourlocal young business owners and increasethe number of young entrepreneurs whostart businesses in the area.

At the time, Enterprise Saint John wasonly aware of a handful of young businessowners. The list consisted of less than 20people. It was clear that the first order ofbusiness for the newly establishedEmerging Entrepreneurs Program was toseek out Saint John’s young businessowners to determine how to best helpthem out. The hours of investigation andresearch paid off and we now proudlyboast a database of more than 300 youngentrepreneurs. Their feedback has helpedus develop a program designed to fulfilltheir needs which has included a monthlylunch seminar series, workshops, productand service focus groups, business plancounseling, networking events and thecreation of social media groups to promotea strong local entrepreneurial culture. Thestrength of our local young entrepreneurialculture is evident on our Emerging

Entrepreneurs face book page which has331 followers.

The 2nd task at hand was to get moreof our youth to look at running their ownbusiness as a viable career alternative. We started doing presentations to highschools, UNB and NBCC letting themknow about the entrepreneurialopportunities available in the community. In addition however, it seemed thatnothing would inspire a love forentrepreneurship like hands-on experienceso we developed a series of business plancompetitions and vendor markets to giveyoung people the opportunity to try selling

their products. Additional programminghas included initiatives for Young Artistsin Business and a pilot program that assistsinternational students to run their ownbusiness while they go through theimmigration process.

The program has reached well over11,000 individuals over the years butwe’re always on the hunt for moreprospective young business owners. Tofind out more about the program - checkout our website as www.eesj.ca. All ofour services are free and confidential.

Leaders of Tomorrow, Today

Saint John has made some prettyimpressive progress in the category of selfreinvention these last six years. We’veseen development of nearly every kindpermanently change our skyline, ouroutlook on the future, and the way we livelife here in this diverse little city on theeast coast. For two-and-a-quarter centuriesthe denizens of these hills and valleys bythe sea have accomplished great things, but in the humble opinion of FUSIONSaint John, 2011 is one of the best timesyet to call Saint John home.

The past six years are of particularinterest because it was in 2004 that anetworking group for active Saint Johnersfirst began, and since then FUSION hasbrought dozens of like-minded individualstogether. The relationships and projectsthat have followed suit are evidenced

throughout our central peninsula, thewest and east sides, our north end and intosurrounding communities; FUSION hashelped shape the Saint John we knowtoday, and there are plans afoot to ensurethis encouraging momentum is sustained.

It is with Saint John’s future in mindthat FUSION is carrying out its mostrecent survey, designed to help pen thepriorities and pathway the group will striveto follow in the years that come. With somuch encouraging history energizing oureveryday, it is with the greatest enthusiasmthat FUSION charts the way for retainingand regaining the younger demographic.

Because that is what it comes down to;nourishing the numbers of young peoplewho live, work, play and learn in SaintJohn. We have great places to work andthe city needs more. We have great

restaurants and shopping, and the cityneeds more. Let’s add more recreationalopportunities, improve infrastructure, andreduce poverty, too. These are some ofways Saint John can be a more attractiveplace to put down roots, or return and re-root, and FUSION can help make ithappen.

Through the strength of our forward-thinking group of Saint Johners, FUSIONcontinues to grow this city and spurreinvention for the present, for the future, and for all who call this place home.

FUSION is always open to new ideason how to make this place everything weknow it can be. To find out more, andprovide your input please visitwww.FUSIONsj.com.

Chris'sunconventional style, combined with hisbusiness acumen and foresight to use socialmedia tools like Twitter, Facebook, andYouTube to reach an untapped audience hasgarnered the attention of many people overthe last 10 years.

Where do you see yourself in thefuture? One thing for sure, is he will continueto follow his passion. What will that be in thefuture? He is not sure, but he will continue toenjoy what he is doing, and will continue to

focus not so much on the numbers and goals.Chris feels, if you focus on the goals, you’llmiss the wonderful time you could be havingright now. Every interaction with family, friends, customers, partners etc. is anopportunity to engage, to share, to help, toimprove lives. He will continue to focus onthat, and is quite confident the numbers willcome. He tries not to predict the future and isshocked that he is where he is now, and couldnever have predicted that. He also tries not tohave expectations or hopes for what peoplemight be doing, because even if the futureturns out to be an amazing place, he’d bedisappointed if his hopes didn’t come true. Sohe tries to focus on doing things he loves now,to lead a simple but happy life now. Let’s seewhat happens!

Leaders of Tomorrow, Today

Post-secondary education is aninvestment in our leaders of tomorrow. InJanuary, the Saint John Board of Tradehosted Marilyn Luscombe, the first everPresident and CEO of the New BrunswickCommunity College, and welcomed herto our business community. During theluncheon Ms. Luscombe referenced theimportance of having strong ties betweenbusiness and our post-secondaryinstitutions. These ties are crucial toensuring our future and the developmentof our leaders of tomorrow.

An example of these ties is thesignificant milestone investment achievedthis past February with the largest giftever given by BMO in Atlantic Canadato UNB. On February 8, BMO FinancialGroup made a $1.75 million investment

It’s been a whirlwind year for 21 Inc.In case you haven’t heard, 21 Inc. aims

to develop and inspire New Brunswick'snew and emerging young leaders.  Weprovide young people in their 20s and 30sfrom all sectors with the tools, networks, and confidence to become effective 21stCentury leaders.

Our slogan: “A Vision. A Voice. AChange.” means we believe our mosttalented and ambitious young people canstay and live empowered, fulfilling livesright here in Atlantic Canada. Togetherwith established leaders we are forging adynamic community, and building aculture of innovation, learning andopportunity.

In 2010 that community grew at itsfastest pace ever since the 21 Leadersmovement was born in 2005. Our flagshipprogram, 21 Leaders for the 21st Century, graduated its third cohort in the spring. The Saint John area's representationincludes Eric Savoie, Janet Thompson-Price, Scott Walton and Christina Taylor.

We also organized our second IdeasFestival, partnering with one of Canada’s

leading think tanks, the Public PolicyForum, to offer a unique mega-meeting-of-the-minds in St. Andrews. Among themore than 40 speakers were Bill McEwan,President and CEO of Sobeys; RogerJackson, CEO of Own The Podium 2010;Joey Adler, CEO of Diesel and Founderof OneXOne; David Eaves, OpenGovernment Activist; Jean Guy Finn,Commission of Local Government; NickOddson, Head of Global R&D forOpenTEXT; and Monique Collette, advisor to the Privy Council of Canada.

Participants told us important contactswere made, projects were started, andcontracts were secured, along withcountless intangible benefits from bringingsome of our nation’s best and mostambitious thinkers and doers together.

“It was truly a privilege to breathe yourair last week, to make the connectionsand be inspired by ideas that are alreadybeginning to take root for me,” wrote oneIdeas Festee who left on an obvious highnote.

Attached to the Festival was our first

regional leadership experience, theEmerging Leaders Summit. The top 50applicants from a pool of 407 nomineesaround Atlantic Canada were chosen forthis enriched experience, which focusedon learning and applying transformationalleadership to their careers.

As we look to 2011 and beyond, we’reencouraged by Premier Alward’scomments in his State of the ProvinceAddress. Alward dubbed 21 Inc. “anincredible opportunity to build leadershipin New Brunswick.”

We agree. In 2011, the organization will reload,

developing activities that will reinforceour mission and strengthen ourcommunity. We’re consolidating gainsand laying a foundation for sustainability,as we build leaders and entrepreneurswho will contribute to the future of SaintJohn, the province, the region, and theworld.
